5) Read the following passage, then answer the questions : (4 Marks)
According to the latest statistics, there is a horrible increase in the world population
today. Three babies are born in the world every second and the rate is increasing more
than 76 million a year. The fastest growth rates continents are Latin America, Africa and
Asia which constitute the developing countries.
The main cause of the population explosion is due to a rise in birth and a fall in death
rates. Also the improvements in public health services and medical care which affects
the increase of population as many babies now survive infancy and adults are living into
old age.
In poor countries , people look to their children as a means for providing them with
security in their old age, so having many children in these poor countries may be a
source of income as children can do a lot of useful jobs on small farms and provide their
parents with money.
The most pressing problems resulting from the rapid increase in population are the
shortage of food, the unemployment and illiteracy which have spread in over-populated
countries and the spread of crowded slums and casual residence, which leads to the
spread of diseases and crimes.
