Problem 1 (5 points) A cannon barrel is elevated 450 above the horizontal. It res a ball with an initial speed of 300 m/s. a) What maximum height does the ball reach? b) What is the speed of the ball at the maximum height? c) What is the acceleration of the ball at the maximum height? d) How long is the ball in the air? e) What is the horizontal range of the cannon ball? (Ignore any eects due to air resistance.)

Problem 2 (5 points) A 60-kg block slides along the top of a 100-kg block. The 60-kg block has an acceleration of 3.0 m/s2 while a horizontal force of 320 N is applied to it, as shown in the Figure. There is no friction between the 100-kg block and the horizontal smooth table surface, but there is friction between the two blocks. a) Find the coecient of kinetic friction between the two blocks. b) Find the acceleration of the 100-kg block during the time that the 60-kg block remains in contact.

Problem 3 (5 points) A pendulum is 0.8 m long and the bob has a mass of 1.00-kg. When the string makes an angle of = 150 with respect to the vertical, the bob is moving at 1.40 m/s. a) Find the tangential and radial acceleration components for the bob. b) Calculate the tension in the string. (mid-term 2 problem)

Problem 4 (5 points) A 1000-kg roller coaster car starts from rest at a height H=25.0 m above the bottom of a 14.0 m diameter loop. If the friction between the car and the track is negligible, determine the speed of the car when the upside-down car is at the top of the loop. What is the downward force of the track on the car at the top of the loop?

Problem 5 (5 points) The 2.0-kg block in Figure slides down a frictionless curved ramp, starting from rest at a height of 3.0 m. The block then slides 9.0 m on a rough horizontal surface before coming to rest. a) What is the speed of the block at the bottom of the ramp? b) What is the energy dissipated by the friction? c) What is the kinetic friction coecient between the block and the horizontal surface?

Problem 6 (5 points) A 1.0-kg steel ball and a 2.0-m cord of negligible mass make up a simple pendulum that can pivot without friction about the point O. This pendulum is released from rest in the horizontal position, and when the ball is at its lowest point it strikes a 1.0-kg block sitting at rest on a shelf. Assume the collision is elastic and the coecient of kinetic friction between the block and the shelf is 0.6. a) What is the velocity of the ball just before the strike? b) What is the velocity of the block just after the impact? c) How far does the block slide before coming to rest (assuming that the shelf is xed and long enough)?

Problem 7 (5 points) Two blocks M =3 kg and m=1 kg are connected by a massless string that passes over a pulley of radius R=0.3 m and mass of 2 kg. The string does not slip on the pulley wheel and the pulley wheel can rotate without friction from the bearing. Find the acceleration of the blocks and the tensions T1 and T2 on the string at the both sides of the pulley (T1 = T2). (The pulley wheel can be modeled as a uniform disk whose rotational inertia I = mR2 /2)

Problem 8 (5 points) A projectile of mass mp is traveling at a constant velocity v0 towards a stationary disk of mass M and radius R that is free to rotate its axis. Before the impact, the projectile is traveling along a line displaced a distance b below the axis. The projectile strikes the disk and sticks to point B. Model the projectile as a point mass. a) Before the impact, what is the total angular momentum of the disk-projectile system about the axis of the disk? b) what is the angular speed of the disk-projectile system just after the impact? c) How much mechanical energy is lost in the collision? Express your results in terms of mp, M , v0, b and R. (Rotational Inertia of a disk is I = MR2 /2)

Problem 9 (5 points) A string is wound around a uniform disk of radius R and mass M . The disk is released from rest with the string vertical and its top end tied to a xed bar. Find a) the acceleration of the Center-of-Mass of the disk; b) the angular acceleration of the Center-of-Mass of the disk; and c) the tension in the string. The rotational inertia of a disk about the Center-of-Mass axis is MR2 /2.

Problem 10 (5 points) A satellite of mass m, originally on the surface of the Earth, is placed into a circular orbit around the Earth at an altitude h (note h is the height from the surface of the Earth). a) What is the speed of the satellite? b) What is the period of the satellite? c) What is the total mechanical energy of the satellite in the orbit? d) What is the minimum energy needed in order to place the satellite to the orbit when the satellite is launched from the surface of the Earth? Ignore air resistance. Represent the mass and radius of the Earth as ME and RE .
