Engineering Application Selection of Design , Properties ( Physical , Chemical, Mechanical , Thermal , Electrical , Magnetic and Optical ) , Performance and Cost Criteria . Special Application - Nuclear, Space and Biological 2. Mechanical Properties: Introduction; Tensile strength; Compression strength; Fatigue strength; Creep strength; Torsion strength; Hardness Testing of material by Brinell, Rockwell machines, 3. Atomic Structure: Introduction; Parts of an atom (nucleus, electrons, proton, neutron); Isotopes; Atomic number; Periodic table; Valiancy; Bonds (ionic, covalent, metallic & secondary bonds) 4. Crystalline Structure: Introduction; Crystal - Brevais Lattices, Crystal Directions and Planes based on Miller Indices, Atomic Packing Factor [for Simple Cubic , Body Centered Cubic (BCC), Face Centered Cubic (FCC), Hexagonal Close Packed (HCP) 5. Defect in Crystals: Point defects; Dislocations and dislocation theory, Anisotropy, Phase Transformations

6.Phase & Phase Transformation: Introduction; Solid solution; Timetemperature curve; Metallic alloy systems; Binary alloy phase diagrams; Iron - carbon equilibrium diagram 7. Cast Irons and Steels: Structure and properties of White Cast iron, Malleable Cast iron, grey cast iron, Spheroid graphite cast iron, Alloy cast irons. Classification of steels, structure and properties of plain carbon steels, Low alloy steels, Hadfield manganese steels, tool and die steels. 8. Composite Materials: Thermo Plastics, Thermosetting Plastics, Elastomers, Fibers. Applications of Polymers. Composite Materials Advantages, Dispersion Strengthened Composites (Sintered Aluminum Powder (SAP), Particulate Composites (Cemented Carbides WC-CO), Fiber Reinforced Composites (Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP), Carbon - carbon Fiber Reinforcement)

Assessment/ evaluation & Grading Systems

Assignments, Laboratory Exercises 10 %,


Mid-semester Examination 40 %, and Final Examination 50 %.

Attendance Requirement:

Minimum of 80% attendance during lecture hours;


100% attendance during practical work sessions, except for some unprecedented mishaps; and Presence during industrial visit/visits. Literature: 1.
