KET for Schools Reading & Writing Part 4 Teachers Notes

Description Students work with the sample text, forming and answering questions for detailed comprehension. They then play a team game using the exam task, before looking at the sample task itself. Time required: Materials required: Aims: 30 minutes Students Worksheets A and B Sample Task to familiarise students with KET for Schools Reading & Writing Part 4 to practise reading for detailed information

Procedure 1. Tell students that they are going to look at a text that is similar to the type they will read in a KET for Schools Reading & Writing Part 4 task. Like the texts in the exam, it is based on an authentic magazine article, but has been adapted for the level. This means there may be some vocabulary they dont know, but this shouldnt make it too difficult for them to understand the text or complete the exam task. 2. Explain that there is some information missing in the text. Students will need to ask their partner questions to find out the missing information. 3. Put the class into pairs, A and B, and give out students worksheets A and B respectively. Give them a few minutes to read the text quickly (without showing their partner their text). Ask students what the text is about (a teenage swimmer, Ana Johnson). Ask if there is any vocabulary that students dont know. If the answer is yes, write the words on the board but dont tell/elicit their meaning. Ask students to look again at the text and see if they can either work out the meaning, or if its not important to the general meaning of the text. Point out that its important for students to get used to reading texts without knowing all the vocabulary. 4. Explain that the words in brackets are there to help them make the questions they need to ask to complete their texts. Check through question formation with the students and write the first question and answer on the board for them. For example: (how old / Ana?) How old is Ana Johnson?

5. Student A should ask all his/her questions first and then Student B can ask her/his questions. Remind students to write the answers they are given on the text. Help with question formation as students are doing the activity in their pairs. This activity encourages students to read their texts closely to find the detailed answers to the questions. Reading for detailed understanding is part of the task focus for Part 4.

6. When the students have finished they should check their text against that of their partner. 7. Now put the pairs into larger teams of 46 people. They are going to play a game based on the exam task for this part. Write on the board: Right Wrong Doesnt say

8. Explain that you are going to read out some statements about the text. If the team thinks the answer is true according to the text, they should answer Right. If they think it is false according to the text, they should answer Wrong. If there isnt enough information in the text to decide, they should answer Doesnt say. As an example, write the following on the board: Anas home is in Melbourne. Elicit that the answer to this is Right (see line one of the text). 9. Explain the rules of the game: Teams only have one chance to answer each question When a team has chosen their answer, one person must raise their hand and that person then has 5 seconds to give their answer. If they dont answer in 5 seconds, they lose their chance and the other teams may answer.

10. Read out the 7 statements from the sample task, one by one (key below). When a team gives the right answer, ask them where in the text they found the answer. Being able to identify where the answer is in a text can help students to confirm their answers are correct. 11. Once you have read all the sentences and have a winning team, give out copies of the sample task for all the students to read. Point out that Part 4 may also be a 3option multiple choice task. With the 3-option multiple choice task, there may be 3 short texts that have a similar focus, instead of one long text. 12. Draw students attention to any vocabulary you wrote on the board in Step 3. Ask if not knowing these words made the activity more difficult, or if they could do it without being sure of the meaning. Elicit the meaning of the words for students to record.

Suggested follow-up activity 1. When practising this type of task (Right, Wrong, Doesnt say) it can be easier to start with just 2 possible answers, e.g. Right or Doesnt Say. This helps to ease students in to having to select between the 3 alternatives.

Ana Johnson is (how old / Ana?) and she lives in Melbourne in Australia. Her dream is to (what / Anas dream?).... She swims in both long and short races and she has already come first in many important competitions. Ana spends many hours in the pool each week, but she also studies hard and (what Ana do / with friends?) with her friends as often as she can. I have lots of friends who swim and were very close. Its much easier to have friends who are swimmers because they also get up early to practise like me and they understand this kind of life. But Im just the same as other people my age. In my free time I also enjoy (what / Ana / do / free time?) There are also some good things about swimming for a club. For example, I travel a lot for competitions and Ive made friends with swimmers from other Australian cities and from other parts of the world. Ana is becoming well known in Australia and she believes it is important to get more young people interested in swimming. I like ...(what / Ana like?) and having my photograph taken. But last year I was on TV and that was much more fun.
