October month of the Rosary Dear Parishioners, In two days we will be entering the month of October, which each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. On October 7th we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast was introduced in 1571 by Pope Saint Pope Pius V in honor of, and gratitude to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her intercession resulting in the miraculous victory of the Christian forces on October 7, 1571 in the famous Battle of Lepanto. The victory was attributed to the direct intervention of the Blessed Mother through the prayers of the Holy Rosary. Today, we desperately need Our Ladys intervention through the Holy Rosary to turn back the moral, spiritual and physical threat we face every day of our lives. Our Lady will overcome all these threats if we turn to her in confident prayer and courageous action. Tradition has it that, moved by a vision of our Blessed Mother, St. Dominic devised the rosary as we know it today. The Rosary is primarily a scriptural prayer and Christocentric prayer. It draws its mysteries from the New Testament and is centered on the great events of the Incarnation and Redemption. "The Joyful," "The Sorrowful," "The Glorious," and "The Luminous Mysteries." All these mysteries revolve around the life of Jesus. Our Blessed Virgin Mother herself has asked us in her apparitions at Fatima and other places, to pray the rosary daily for the conversion of sinners and of the world! In this month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation. From John Paul II's Message for World Youth Day 2003, on praying the Rosary: Dear young people, do not be ashamed to recite the Rosary alone, while you walk along the streets to school, to the university or to work, or as you commute by public transport. Adopt the habit of reciting it among yourselves, in your groups, movements and associations. Do not hesitate to suggest that it be recited at home by your parents and brothers and sisters, because it rekindles and strengthens the bonds between family members. This prayer will help you to be strong in your faith, constant in charity, joyful and persevering in hope.
