Problem 1: BOLTS (20 POINTS) For a bolted assembly with eight bolts, the stiffness of each bolt is kb=1.0MN/mm and the stiffness of the members is km=2.6MN/mm per bolt. The bolts are preloaded to 75% of their proof strength. Assume an external load is applied to the member and that this load is equally distributed among the bolts. The bolts are M6x1 class 5.8 with rolled threads. A fluctuating external load is applied to the entire joint with Pmax= 60kN and Pmin=20kN. Determine: (a) The Yield factor of safety (b) The overload factor of safety (c) The factor of safety based upon joint separation.

Problem 2: SPRINGS (20 POINTS) Consider the steel spring shown in the figure. (a) Find the pitch, solid height, and number of active turns (note the ends are turned, but how much of a coil is end coil?) (b) Find the spring rate if the material is A227HD. (c) Find the force, Fs, required to close the spring solid. (d) Find the shear stress in the spring due to Fs.

Problem 3: BEARINGS (20 POINTS) An angular contact, inner ring rotating, 02-series ball bearing is required for an application in which the life requirement is 40,000 hours at 520 rpm. The design radial load is 725 lbf. The application factor is 1.4. The reliability goal is 0.90. Find the multiple of rating life, xD required and the catalog rating C10 with which to enter table 112. Choose a bearing and estimate the existing reliability in service.

Problem 4: GEARS (20 POINTS) The double reduction helical gearset shown in the figure is driven through shaft a at a speed of 700rpm. Gears 2 and 3 have a normal diameteral pitch of 12 teeth/in, a 30 degree helix angle and a normal pressure of 20 degrees. The second pair of gears in the train, gears 4 and 5, have a normal diametral pitch of 8 teeth/in, a 25 degree helix angle and a normal pressure of 20 degrees. The tooth numbers are: N2=12, N3=48, N4=16, N5=36. Find: (a) The directions of thrust force exerted by each gear upon its shaft. (b) The speed and direction of shaft c. (c) The center distance between shafts.

Final Exam Problem 5: Design (20 POINTS):

Name______________________________________

You are tasked with designing a rotating bending testing machine with the geometry shown in the diagram below. A motor, mounted through a flexible coupling transmits rotation to a shaft that then rotates the test sample. The sample is held by chucks at either end that grip a standard fatigue specimen. An example of such a testing machine is shown in the Figure below, as well as a standard test sample. Map out, step by step, the process you would use to choose the bearings, motor, and shafts to provide a machine with infinite lifetime.

Test samples
As a standard, the testing machine is designed to operate using two types of test samples: 1. A standardised test sample with a length of 226 mm, a testing length of 96 mm and a minimum diameter of 7.52 mm. 2. Small sized test samples with a length of 40 mm, a diameter at the clamping position of 8 mm and in the testing area of 5 mm with a radius of R=19 mm, as shown in Figure 2.2.
