Rigid polyurethane foams contribute to society and culture by conserving natural resources and helping to preserve the environment. With its ideal strength to weight ratio, insulation properties, durability, and unmatched versatility, it's no wonder why polyurethane is quite at home in building and construction around the world, yielding high performance and exceptional energy efficiency in a wide range of applications (building, warehouses, prefabricated structures, roofs and walls, sectional doors, ducts and air conditioning systems, pipes network for water/oil/heating distribution). Structural polyurethane foam core insulated panels with external rigid or flexible facing can be part of the building structure. These panels improve the look and utility of the building as well as its construction speed-up and reduce the amount of expensive wood necessary for structural frames, saving time and energy and protecting natural resources as well.

The main advantages of polyurethane foam insulation can be considered the following:

rigid polyurethane foams are made of a remarkable strong, lightweight, low-density structure that is both dimensionally stable and moisture-proof with low vapour transmission. This special combination of properties allows manufacturers to design thermal insulating products that are self-supporting, can be combined with a wide range of substrates while requiring no additional adhesive, and - when combined with the proper materials - perform as external barriers against weather and moisture. high-performance polyurethane insulation can be moulded in special shapes and relatively large sizes. for durability and stability, rigid polyurethane foam core entry doors and garage doors are available in finishings and styles to suit even the most demanding client. the mechanical strength of these foams is noticeable. High compressive and shear strength allow low-density insulating cores to be faced with relatively thin steel or aluminium.

the environmental benefits of rigid polyurethane foam are significant: increased energy efficiency, reductions in energy-efficient construction costs, reduced product weight and saving of all the construction components that the material replaces. better insulation typically results in less energy consumption.

Polyurethane-filled panels for structural and insulation applications are produced using discontinuous or continuous foaming systems. Sandwich Insulated Panels - Discontinuous Process As far as the discontinuous production is concerned, the technical competence and the experiences, gained by Cannon worldwide by dealing with many different projects, have been consolidated thanks to the long lasting technological partnership with Manni, Italian manufacturer of hydraulic presses for these specific applications. This co-operation has allowed Cannon to satisfy the most technologically demanding customers by supplying complete tailor-made and fully automated industrial turn-key plants. Also to be applied to discontinuous processes, an innovative system for panels foaming assisted by vacuum has been jointly developed and patended by Cannon and other project partners. The depression generated inside the panel before the foaming phase allows an extremely significant productivity increase, a better material density distribution, material saving, high quality production and an absolutely clean working area.

Sandwich Insulated Panels - Continuous Process Cannon manufacture and sell worldwide complete continuous lines for the production of insulated sandwich panels used by the civil and industrial building industries. The panels can be produced with a maximum thickness of 250 mm and either flexible sheet (paper, cardboard and felt, centesimal aluminium sheet, etc.) or rigid metal sheet. Cannon manufacture by taking care of the accuracy and the efficiency of each device, with the support of the latest available constructive technologies. Cannon plants are complex industrial systems with a high level of automation, equipped with innovative and well tested technical solutions able to satisfy the most demanding customers. In the light of specific customer's needs, the sandwich panel production lines can be tailor-made, designed and manufactured for being used with different types of insulating materials:

polyurethanes phenolic resin foams

mineral wools (block of not oriented mineral fibers and mattresses made of already oriented fibers).

The choice to use a technology rather than another one is mainly due to the production required, to the panel complexity and to the level of investment. The research of a proper compromise among investment, flexibility and output has been pursued for long time by many producers (and equipment manufacturers).

Thermal insulation of external walls

The optimum solution for protection against the cold Wherever the components of a building are in contact with the outside air, it is essential to have efficient insulation for external walls. That is why it is necessary to insulate all surfaces on the outside of a building in order to ensure optimum thermal insulation and thus increased savings in heating energy. Bayer's PU rigid foams considerably improve thermal insulation. Energy losses compared to other insulating materials are reduced by 25 %, which means significant saving for the homeowner.

Thermal insulating boards

High thermal insulation means environmental protection Against the backdrop of an impending climate change caused by the increasing greenhouse effect, saving energy is one of today's prime objectives with a view to saving resources and to reducing CO2 emissions. Furthermore legal regulations and ordinances compel us cut down on energy consumption and to improve thermal insulation in buildings. The building and construction industry is the biggest customer for rigid foam as a thermal insulating material. With its effective insulation system Baymer, Bayer AG offers its customers all the advantages of cost-effective construction. Owing to PU rigid foam's low thermal conductivity, it is possible to save more than half of the average heating energy consumed, particularly in older, poorly insulated buildings. The particular advantages of insulating panels are unmistakable:

high thermal insulating capacity for increased savings in heating energy high compressive strength low weight CFC-free excellent long-term behavior large range of products easy to work with biologically and chemically resistant

rot-proof good dimensional stability emission-free and moisture resistant in dry construction good fire safety classification inexpensive material for modernizing buildings controlled quality

Window frames
In most residential buildings windows are the components having the lowest thermal insulation. That is why PU rigid foam is excellently suited as an insulating material for window frames. This is a low-maintenance material which is extremely resistant to weathering and can be manufactured in almost any shape. Advantages at a glance:

highly insulated core made of PU rigid foam high strength unsusceptible to environmental influences

PU window frames are a sound investment in long-lasting, highquality and functional living quality. Owing to the fact that internal and external colors can be combined, there is a large variety of individual design options.

Flat roof insulation

Flat roof insulation has to satisfy particularly stringent demands because the insulation always has to be applied on the top. That means that the insulating material needs to combine a high degree of insulating efficiency with a level of heat resistance and dimensional stability sufficient to withstand the temperatures generated by solar radiation, which can be as high as 80 C or more. Advantages of flat roof insulation:

high long-term heat resistance short-term heat resistance of polyurethane rigid foam boards of up to + 250 C, enabling them to be laid using hot bitumen good compressive strength optimum energy savings simple, inexpensive installation thermal protection of the roof aids equalization of structural stresses protection against condensation and precipitation

The compressive strength of polyurethane flat roof insulating boards makes them suitable as a substrate not only for gravel fill layers, but also for tiles and roof gardens, terraces, roofing decks capable of withstanding wheeled traffic and parking decks.

Floor insulation
We all know that unpleasant feeling of bare feet on cold floors. This is a caused by insufficient or inefficient thermal insulation. Efficient thermal insulation is of crucial importance for any homeowner today. Apart from helping to save energy, optimum insulation contributes significantly to improving the comfort of your home. Owing to the fact that Bayer's PU rigid foams have a lower thermal conductivity than other insulating materials, their thickness is also less when it comes to complying with the requirements of the regulations on thermal insulation for a building's internal and external components. Besides their excellent thermal insulation properties, their good compressive strength and ability to withstand foot traffic are other important features. Advantages at a glance:

resistant to pressure and safe to walk on reduced thickness complete system solutions no cold feet

As far as underfloor heating is concerned, it is also easy to comply with all requirements of the regulations on thermal insulation with respect to reducing heat transmission. Thanks to continuous production processes, large panels formats can be produced at low cost.

Passive house with PU rigid foam

All-round thermal insulation saves money The polyurethane system Baymer from Bayer allow highly effective all-round thermal insulation for special energy savings in passive houses. Their energy requirement is less than 15 kWh/m2/year and therefore far below today's thermal insulation limits and well within future energy saving regulations. Important decisions affecting a house are made at the building stage: for example how environment-friendly it will be, and whether the it will be sufficiently economical in terms of natural resources. The impacts of these decisions will affect several decades, so very careful calculations are needed. Thermal insulation with polyurethane is the ultimate energy saver. This insight is by no means new: rigid polyurethane foam is indispensable as thermal insulation for floors, walls, ceilings and roofs, as well as for refrigerators, freezers, and pipes. With its Baymer, Bayer provides ideal all-purpose solutions. A new idea has now been realized in a newly built house in Viernheim (Hesse, Germany): a passive house insulated all round with polyurethane. With an overall floor space of about 140 square meters, it needs less than 15 kWh/m2/year in energy for room and water heating. This low level of energy consumption also defines a passive house, as it corresponds to approx. 1.5 liters of heating oil or 1.5 cubic meters of natural gas per square meter per year. A passive house therefore uses no more than 15-20 percent of the energy permitted for new buildings under the latest thermal insulation regulations (70-100 kWh/m2/year). Houses built in the seventies, by contrast, need over 200 kWh/m2/year, in other words about 20 liters per square meter per year. In 2001, when new energy savings regulations will come into force, the limit for new buildings will be lowered by another 30 percent, but passive houses will still be well below this new figure.

There are two reasons for this: efficient thermal insulation and specific design measures. First of all, the design and geographical orientation of a passive house enable you to make the best possible use of natural energy sources, such as solar radiation. Secondly, perfect, highly efficient, all-round thermal insulation helps you keep the house warm during the winter and cool in summer. This is an area where polyurethane has proved its worth as the most efficient commercially available insulating material.

Insulation for pitched roofs

Considering today's scarcity of residential accommodation and bearing in mind the ever-increasing cost of energy, no house owner or building client can afford to do without thermal insulation of their pitched roof. This holds true for new buildings as well as for old ones requiring modernization. Pitched roof have their special problem zones, e.g. apertures for chimneys could prove to be weak spots through which moisture can enter. Because of their fitting accuracy, Bayer's insulating systems and panels made of rigid polyurethane foam can be used for high quality, homogenous insulation without thermal bridges. There are different options for insulating: Systems for insulating on the rafters are often used when dealing with conventional rafter constructions and new buildings. This is the best and most efficient method to insulate a roof, because the insulating material completely envelops the roof, thus protecting the whole roof structure against adverse temperature influences. When carrying out attic conversions, the insulating material id often applied underneath the rafters in order to reduce the loss of energy through the roof. Here, Bayer PU insulating panels demonstrate their superiority over other insulating materials, because the loss in space is small owing to the panels' reduced thickness. Advantages of PU insulating panels for pitched roofs:

space saving dimensionally stable soot, dust, wind and rain are kept out long service life suitable for dealing with apertures (chimneys, antennae etc.) low weight special joint design decorative interior design high resistance against chemicals and wood preservatives Bayer also offers its customers the opportunity to eliminate the expensive rafter construction all together by using special self supporting PU wood sandwich panels. The panels are directly mounted onto the horizontal purlins thus forming a perfect seal on the inside of the roof.
