In Search of Answers
Forensic science is the process of using medical science in solving serious criminal cases like murder. A forensic team will gather and analyze evidence from the crime scene which will eventually aid a lawyer in C a court case. 1 Although recent discoveries in science and technology have greatly improved the field of forensics, some of the methods still used today originated in the late 1800s. French policeman Alphonse Bertillon was eager to find a system that identified criminals, especially A multiple offenders, those with repeat criminal offences. 2 He began to record details about the size of a persons head and body, shape of their eyes, ears, and mouth, as well as scars and tattoos. We know that even today when police question witnesses, the first thing they ask for is a description of the suspect. The information that was gathered was then filed and used to compare with other results until similar traits were matched and a criminals profile was created. E 3 First of all, he came up with what we know today as the mug shot, the front and side photograph of people who are arrested by the police. These shots would accompany their files that included characteristic descriptions and criminal activity or offences. Moreover, the camera was taken to photograph the crime scene before it was disturbed by investigators. In turn, all these photographs could be used in forensic analysis and presented as evidence in a court of law. Another method still used to identify criminals to this day is the analysis of the footprint or fingerprint. Bertillon would study footprint impressions on the ground around crime scenes. He B would take measurements and add them to his records. 4 However, in the 1890s a new form of identifying criminals was developed; that of the fingerprint which grew in popularity because it was a faster way to identify criminals than analyzing their writing. D 5 Forensic science has gone from the study of footprint impressions and descriptions to hair, fiber, and DNA analysis. There are hundreds of labs and thousands of scientists around the country working daily to help solve mysterious and brutal crimes.

He believed better methods of description were needed that would lead the police to the arrest of a guilty party. Furthermore, he improved techniques of handwriting analysis, the study of a persons handwriting that can determine his/her character and personality. This evidence can result in a guilty verdict for a criminal or even a verdict of innocence in the case of a suspect. Within a year his methods had led to the arrest of over 240 offenders. An invention that Bertillon quickly adopted in his investigations was the use of photography. Over a century later and an explosion in population, horrible crimes are still committed and the need for serious crime fighters is on the rise.
