Peace Lutheran Church

OCTOBER 2013
OCTOBER SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Fall is here and weve already finished half of our first rotation, The Battle of Jericho. If youve noticed a bunch of kids walking around with horns, its because theyve been learning about the seven priests who blew their shofars as they walked around the walls of Jericho until they came tumbling down! On Sunday, October 6th, the 3rd Graders will be receiving their Bibles and our Sunday School Staff Installation will be held during church services. On Sunday, October 13th, the Sunday School students will be singing in Church.

Our first Community Service project will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13 th when we decorate our planters for fall. Were looking for small, medium, and large pumpkins and gourds. Please let us know if you have any you can donate.
Solomon Builds the Temple is our next rotation which will be presented Oct. 20th through Nov. 10th. We are still looking for teachers for Cooking and Games and a substitute teacher for Movies. Weve had a few great volunteers who have taken a week to teach. Theyve done a great job and we are so thankful for them. Now we just need a few more people to step up and help us!!! On Sunday, November 10th, we will be serving cake for our Veterans and on Sunday, November 17th, we will be doing our second Community Service project of collecting food for the Food Shelves. If youd like us to come to your house to collect, please let us know. Our attendance is down a little bit but were hoping it will pick up now that the camping season is almost over and kids get into the routine of attending Sunday School each week. They are greatly missed when they dont attend! As always, everyone is welcome to visit our classrooms anytime. If you have questions, suggestions, or concerns, feel free to contact us. WELCA meets October 2nd at 1:00pm. We will be packing kits and having election of officers. Ever-Blessed Quilters meet 9am on Tuesday, October 15th and Wednesday, October 16th.
Keep your eyes open for the next couple of months. Council is thinking of adding beautification to the outside of our building using funds from a recent memorial. Questions? Please talk to a council member. Perk up! with Pastor, our newest ministry for adults of all ages will be gathering at 7am on Monday mornings at the Barrett Inn and Caf for a holy meal in the presence of your church family, to hear and pray for all of the places we find God in our lives and community, and to dive deeper into the biblical story. Since Perk up! with Pastor is something new for us all, it only makes sense to share the hopes we have in bringing this Adult Ministry to our community.

Pr. Matthew wants to visit and get to know YOU better! To help keep communication lines open, he has decided to add in "Drop-in hours" at church on a trial basis. You can still setup meetings/visits other times, like always, by phone call or email, but you can now also just drop in at church on Mondays from 10:30-Noon, and Thursdays Noon-1:30!

Church Office Hours: Monday 8am-12noon; Thursday 12noon to 4pm.

Stewardship of the Good News

I recently came across a little advice on How to Make or Break a Habit, which I thought helpful or at least intriguing, especially since I made the choice to pay for an active membership at the YMCA, a cost that although not significant, is also money that certainly could be used elsewhere in my life as well. The advice was broken down into four simple steps designed to help you break an unwanted habit or add a new one into your life: Our 8th-9th graders (and their families) have made a recent commitment to Be Present and see where and how God deepens their lives of faith through showing up to worship, and Wednesdays and more. They are going to try to build a habit, and watch as God shows up for them in both their successes and failures.

What can you/will you begin, right now, flamboyantly to deepen your faith life? Is it Perk Up! with Pastor? Is it No. 1 Do it immediately. coming early or staying later for fellowship on Sundays? Is it This seems to imply that procrastination is the enemy of real moving towards intentional financial giving for our ministries, or the ministry being done elsewhere? Is it returnchange. That certainly has been true in my experience, as I think about the number of times I have decided to stop doing ing to regular Community Worship? Is it volunteering for something, or add something else into my life. The longer the Sunday School, or Release Time, or Youth Group? Is it joining gap between the decision point and the action point, the less with others to provide hands-on service in the larger community? The options are truly endless, and whatever it is likely I am to make the change. tell us and keep it up. No. 2 Do it flamboyantly. Of course this is my favorite of the four steps, because it feels As much as I hope that as youre reading this you do feel that playful. This also has the effect of increasing the visibility of my desired change, and keeps it in front of me and the world. we as the church, your church, is full of hope and potential, I also want to honestly acknowledge something. Its a matter No. 3 Tell others you intend to do it. of when, not if, the church will let you down, and I will likely There is no substitute for the support and accountability let you down. As you start on this new habit, this new faith for change when we let others in on our decision. It is much practice, I think its important to decide now, when things easier to follow through with change when we know that our are going well, what you will do when that day of brokenness spouse, children, friends, co-workers, or fellow disciples comes. After you are disappointed, after we or I fail you, will understand what we are trying to do and why we are doing you still stick around? I ask this because I know, and it. And that they will notice when our enthusiasm begins to hopefully you believe now, that if you do leave you will miss lag, or our zeal becomes a little tarnished. how God does show up, in our collective lives together, in our success and our failure. That hope, life, forgiveness, joy, No. 4 Do it repeatedly. and comfort is too beautiful to miss, to beautiful to give up I have heard it said that to really own a new habit or break on, just because of a failed person or the failure of this huan old one, you need to practice the new behavior man institution. We are broken and fail, but God bares our consistently for at least six weeks. In my experience, the failure and shows up even in the midst of it. longer I practice, the better. I dont know what new habit your being quietly or loudly So what does all this have to do with the Church newsletter called to is, but I encourage you to do it, whole heartedly, you ask? Well let me start by saying the point is NOT to draw and watch God show up in the midst of it, for you. attention to MY new personal habit of swimming and ~Matthew Rose working out at the YMCA. What is IS, is to instead encourage YOU to form a new habit (or deepen a current habit) of participation in Church. I know your reading the newsletter (which is something that at times in my ministry I have been convinced no one reads), but there is more. WE are better with YOU, regardless of your faults, failures, challenges, or brokenness. Peace Lutheran is not as fully able to share in and proclaim the Gospel of Christ without you.
