Introduction
This is a user guide and catalog for all of my favorite apps on iTunes. Some of you may ask who is this Veronica Starovoit, and what gives her the right to judge apps? Im just a geek and a writer with an affection for apple products. Just ask my iPod touch Lil Randy, iPad Big Randy, Macbook Pro Smart Randy and my soon-to-be added iPhone 5 Perfect Randy, which will hopefully be unveiled later this year. Oh, and heres a picture of the Randy who started it all (he wasnt invented by Apple, but I still think hes neat):

The Super Apps Code

This is a catalog and manual of apps that I consider extraordinary. For various reasons outlined below and in the pages of this book, these apps have been chosen to represent all apps. Think of them as champions of the people: or superheroes, if you will. If youre a new user to apps, this is a guide to whats special and good on iTunes. If youre an experienced user confused about what to pick among all the thousands of apps have no fear, this guide is here! The apps in this book are organized by their superhero special traits. Heres in explanation of what they all mean: Powergrid: These are a rating system measuring things like intelligence, power, longevity, or usefulness, depending on the category of app displayed. These ratings are based on my personal opinion after using the apps. Creator: The company that made the app. Sidekicks: The free, lite, or other version of an app. Allies: The compatible devices and version of iOS (the Apple operating system) needed to use the apps. Superpowers: What makes these apps unique and special? This explains the powers and abilities of the apps. Weaknesses: Every hero has a weakness. This section outlines what makes the app imperfect. Price to Pay: The 2011 price (subject to change). Superhero Task: Includes a task or reference that will help you use the app.

Superhero Task: To start a training session using

flash cards 1. Click the MemWords app on your iOS device to display the welcome screen. 2. Close the welcome screen by pressing the X on the top right corner. 3. Click Continue on the bottom right corner to start reviewing flashcards. If you are a new user, you are taken through a tutorial on how to use flashcards. If you are a returning user, you can review the flashcards from your previous session before using new ones. 4. When viewing a flashcard, say the word written on it in Russian, French, or Spanish or click the speaker icon at the top to hear how the word is said. 5. Tap the card to see the English meaning. 6. After you have memorized a word, click I know it! to move on to the next flashcard.

This app, approved by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIS), lets you know which cosmetic, personal care, and personal product companies are completely free from animal testing.
Weaknesses: Only lists companies that are

100% cruelty free. While this may not seem like a limitation, it is because it ignores product lines like Clairols Herbal Essences and CoverGirls NatureLuxe, which are also cruelty free in their own way.

Superhero Task: While out shopping, you may

wonder how to spot a cruelty free product. In three simple steps, heres how you spot a company that doesnt test on animals 1. Click the Cruelty-Free app on your iOS device. An alphabetical list of companies that do not test on animals is displayed. 2. Click the Products tab at the bottom to display the products view. 3. Select a category for the item you are shopping for (bleach, cosmetics, insect repellent, etc) and a shorter list of companies that manufacture cruelty free products in that category is displayed.

newbie astronomers, Star Chart is an app to view and learn about the sky. This app analyzes and calculates the position in the sky your device is pointed at and displays information on constellations, stars, planets, and galaxies in your view. You can also get it to direct you to specific focal points in the sky such as a planet or your star sign.
Weaknesses: GPS takes a while to update when

the newest iOS comes out. It also requires an Internet connection to work, so users with iPod touchs beware!

Superhero Task: To use Star Chart on the nights sky

1. Click the Star Chart app on your iOS device. If this is your first time using the app, a default view of some constellations appears. If this is not your first time, the view from your previous session appears. 2. Click the Augmented Reality button at the bottom of the app. This turns the screen into a realtime view of what your iOS device is pointed at. 3. Face the back of your iOS device to a position in the night sky that interests you. 4. Read the screen to learn about what youre looking at, whether it be a constellation, star, planet, galaxy, or other interplanetary body.

about famous art or artists, Art is a handy app to have around. You can browse through the worlds most famous artists and sculptors, view their artwork in high definition on your iOS device and read their bios. If you think you know the art youve studied well enough, you can quiz yourself and try to guess who created which piece of art. Art also provides bonuses like links to additional information, a free subscription to an art newsletter, and a rundown of the most expensive artwork ever created.
Weaknesses: While this may seem like a strength,

there are so many artists and artwork in this app (204 and growing), the quiz component is intimidating for both novice and advanced users.

Superhero Task: To start learning about famous art

1. Click the Art app on your iOS device. The homepage opens where you can search for artists, take a quiz, view your gallery of favorited art and more. 2. Click Artists at the top to be directed to an alphabetical list of famous artists. 3. Select an artist to display their profile. 4. Select the artists artwork, biography, or links to learn more about them.

Not only is this app free, it is the best of its kind for having unlimited food options. Even if you dont find your food in the catalog, you can still input its calories and nutrients.
Weaknesses: You must remember to log all your

daily food and exercise. You can set up email reminders and alerts, but it is ultimately up to you to find the willpower and remember.

Superhero Task: Lose It! makes it easy to lose or

maintain weight by setting goals and keeping track of daily diet activities. Log your diet with Lose It! on any given day like this: 1. Click the Lose It! app on your iOS device. If you have set up your goals, skip to step 5. 2. Set your weight goals by clicking the Goals icon at the bottom of the screen and then click Modify Program. 3. Fill out your starting, current, and goal weight, your gender, height, and age, and finally your weekly plan for losing or maintaining weight. 4. Click the Goals button at the top left corner and then the My Day icon at the bottom of the screen. 5. Click Add Food or Add Exercise to browse through and select your food and exercise activities for the day. 6. Click Cancel or finishing logging activities to go back to the My Day screen, where your daily calorie status will have updated.

1. Click the Cures A-Z app on your iOS device. A popup about the apps creators is displayed, which you can disable. 2. Type your symptoms or possible ailment in the search bar at the top. A list of possible ailments displays. 3. Read the background information and treatments for your ailment.

with Nike+ GPS 1. Click the Nike+ GPS app on your iOS device. The Summary page appears with statistics from your previous run, or appears blank if you have not used the app before. 2. Click Done to go to the Distance Pace page. 3. Search your country and city in the search bar and zoom in as close to your route as you can with the map provided. 4. Using your fingers, draw an outline of the route you will be running. 5. Keep the app running (you can play music in the background) to enable GPS and keep track of your speed as you run your course.

Superhero Task: To start a Fast Workout

routine with All-In Fitness 1. Click the All-In Fitness app on your iOS device. The Exercise page displays with exercises listed by body part. 2. Click the Workout tab at the bottom of the screen. 3. Select which body part you would like to focus your exercise on. 4. Click as many exercises as you would like to perform from the list. Selected exercises will have a check mark beside them. 5. Click Save when your done to return to the body part screen. 6. Select another body part to exercise and repeat step 4, or click Save to finish and begin your routine.

Superhero Task: To start a workout with Nike Training Club 1. Click the Nike Training Club app on your iOS device. The Lea Michele workout page displays, which you have unlock by exercising with the app enough to use. 2. Click Get Workout. 3. Select your type of workout goal from Get Lean, Get Tones, Get Strong, or Get Focussed. 4. Select your level of fitness from Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. 5. Select the workout routine you would like to do. 6. Click Set Music to choose music you would like to workout with from your iTunes Library. 7. Click the back button and click Do Workout on the workout routine screen. If you need a video on how to perform any of the moves, click the projector icon at the top right of the screen.

Weaknesses: The difficulty can be discouraging, but

you may also practise in the Zen mode.

Superpowers: This app is adorable and well

thought out. The battle between cows and invading aliens has been a long one. In this game, cows and aliens are dressed up in adorable costumes like princesses, devils, and even each other. They are then pitted against one another to either be herded or abducted, depending on how well you play.
Weaknesses: This is a fairly new app (released in

mid-2011), so there are no modes to play other than the original.

Weaknesses: The app is built of arcade games,

which deviates from Batmans usual style of action/adventure.

Batman: Gotham City Games to beat the game (and all of Batmans enemies). Some of the levels:
Scarecrows Challenge: Catch Scarecrows biplane by navigating the Batwing through pumpkin bombs and shooting targets in the sky.
Penguin Pinball: A classic game of pinball played as Batman gambles with the millionaire criminal Penguin.
Batman Bowling: Somewhere, a battle between Batman and his archnemesis goes terribly awry. Play this game as the Joker and knock down all the Batman pins.

Superhero Task: To create a new song using DJ

Mixer Pro 1. Click on the DJ Mixer Pro app on your iOS device. You are shown two turntables right away, with preloaded songs if you have used the app before. 2. Click the music note on the bottom left corner of either turntable. 3. Select a song from your iTunes library you would like to mix. Repeat steps 1-3 if you would like to mix another song on the second turntable with your first song. 4. Click the play button on one or both of your songs. 5. Turn the turntable, add effects using the Effects tab, and record your song when ready.

Superpowers: The premiere piano app on iTunes is

most definitely the Super app Piano+. Not only is it the highest rated and most downloaded piano app, it also comes with the best features. Learn to play on seven different keyboards, play piano music and add you own notes along the way, and learn what all the different notes on the instrument are called.
Weaknesses: The creators are French. Although

there are no instructions involved with using this app, emailing questions will get you French responses. Sacr bleu!

Creator: Tapulous, Inc. Sidekicks: Tap Tap Revenge 1 through 4 (theres a new free version of this app every few months!) Allies: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with iOS 2.0 or later Superpowers: This musical app can be played as both individual songs and as a game. Follow along with the songs in kids, easy, medium, hard, and extreme modes by tapping your fingers on the coloured spheres as they move across the screen. The Price to Pay is free and new versions of this app come out every few months. Thats a lot of fun and selection at your fingertips! Weaknesses: Only about eight songs are available in each Tap Tap Revenge version. You can download new music yourself by clicking the New Music icon on the home screen, though these are often by indy artists (but hopefully youll find something you like). Price to Pay: Free

Superhero Task: To play Tap Tap Revenge 1. Click the Tap Tap app on your iOS device. Note: If youve downloaded more than one version, the icons will be different colours. 2. Click the Play button. 3. Select One Player to play by yourself, Two Player to play with someone else (there will be two places to tap on your iOS device), Online to play an online opponent, or Career to play various challenges. 4. In any of these modes, select a difficulty, and then select a song within this difficulty. 5. When the song starts, red, green and blue spheres will move towards the circles at the bottom of the screen. Tap them as they pass through the circles at just the right time to earn points.

Superpowers: Add a hit TV show to a favorite

pastime for the musically inclined (or those who wish they were) and you get this neat app. Sing along with all your favorite songs from the series Glee. New songs are constantly being added (as often as theyre sung on the show), so this app is still growing. There are also challenges that let this app act as your music coach and help you get better as you sing or even autotune you if you choose.
Weaknesses: You only get two free songs to

start with. To earn more, you have gain points by completing challenges or record and share yourself singing with other users of this app. There is also a shortcut where you can pay $0.99 to get a copy of the song on your app as well as in your iTunes library.

Superhero Task: To start a session with Glee Karaoke 1. Click the Glee Karaoke app on your iOS device. 2. Click Karaoke, then choose from the list of songs you want to sing. 3. When the lyrics appear on screen, sing along with them as they turn from white to yellow. j Tips: Play Challenge mode to earn Starbursts and more songs to play with. When you record yourself, Glee Karaoke applies a slight autotune to your voice. To apply additional effects, try A capella mode. Click the Globe button to hear recordings of the Glee songs from users around the world. There are global rankings for the best rated rendition of each song, and you can add your own records in this mode as well.
