What is the Learning Folder?

Summary
The Learning Folder is an electronic and physical documentation of events and activities at Proyecto Horizonte. The main volunteers involved with each event are required to compile information in Activity Profiles after it has been completed. This allows for reflection on the event and consideration of the successes and areas for improvement. Recording this information in The Learning Folder means we have an ever growing body of knowledge and experience to look to when volunteers are forming/applying their ideas.

Why?
This Folder was created to be a source of inspiration and knowledge from past projects and is intended to be read by new or, existing volunteers with new ideas. It is intended to keep volunteers from repeating the same mistakes with projects and allows us to build on experience so we can constantly improve the impact of events/activities. The Learning Folder allows volunteers to see what has been successful or failed in the past, and gives them a chance to make adequate adjustments for more successful and targeted projects in the future. Having all the information in one folder that volunteers can read independently saves staff time as they no longer have to explain about previous projects in details to each new volunteer.

Title of Program/Activity: Youth Week Date of Activity: 1-5 of July Who was involved? (name key staff and volunteers): Author of Report: Fasharra Branagan Instructions: Fill out the Activity Profile after the project/activity is complete. Please complete no more than 2 weeks after the event. 1. Describe the program/activity that was organized?

Youth Week was an activity that gave the youth of UsphaUspha and the surrounding area a positive and healthy place to hang out and relax. This program lasted for a week and there was a variety of different activities welcome for the kids to do every night. There was internet, arts and crafts, soccer and music every night but also a theme activity as well. For instance, on Monday night it was dance with the kids learning a dance from volunteers that have experience and on Thursday there was a contest for the drawing of logo which will become the symbol for the long awaited youth caf.

2. What were the main objectives and intended outcomes of the activity?

The main objective and intended outcomes of this activity was to give the older children something fun and positive to do during the night. By keeping the teens preoccupied at some hours of the night we hoped to curb the growth of the youth joining gangs and entering into destructive situations. Proyectos main goal is to build the community of Ushpa-Uspha into a self-sustaining and healthy community, and to do that we must keep the youth on a path of progress and growth.

3. What area of Proyecto Horizontes work does this activity link to? If the activity was part of a new area, please describe.

The area of Proyectos Horizonte work that this activity links to is Community Development and building the population through positive and influential means.

4. What parts of the activity worked well? Explain.

There was quite a turn out in terms of children that came as a whole, meaning the time and dedication that went into advertising was well spent. All of the activities that were given or in place each night were a success in some way. The computers/internet was in constant use, lots of drawings and jewelry were made and soccer was one of the main attractions especially for the older boys. The room that we used also worked well as in we had it converted for the use of the Youth Night. Although still chilly, it was a very good idea to have some of the activities going on inside, thus giving a separate and plenty of space for the different activities offered. Another thing that worked rather well was the attendance sheet that was brought to every student to sign. This gave us clear cut information about the majority of students, allowing for proper judgment calls to be made on certain aspects. Gave the information on what age group was in majority and from what school. This came in handy when making the decision on changing the run of the program. Meaning for the majority of the week there was an abundance of little children coming starting around 3 yrs old when our target age was 13 and up. To combat the problem, on Thursday and Friday a new rule was put in place. To give the younger kids until a certain time and then they had to go home. The older kids were then to come from that time until 8pm.

5. What parts of the activity didnt work? Explain.

As said above, in the beginning there were too many small children and not enough of the age group we were expecting. That would have to be the main problem during Youth Week.

6. Do you have any tips, suggestions or words of wisdom about this activity/area that can be used in future?

We now know that we have to make it abundantly clear that youth night is only for a certain age, though the splitting the night into two parts was somewhat a success.

If possible, please include a picture of the event here for the profile
