2013 Over-Seeding Schedule

Golf Course Closes October 7 and reopens on Monday, October 28. Why Over-Seed?
Each October we close the course for three weeks to accomplish Over-Seeding. Why would we want to close the course for three weeks just as the weather is getting nice and the course is in great shape? The reason is to provide our golfers with a better playing surface and green grass during the cool winter months. If we dont go through the Over-Seed process, our Bermuda base turf becomes yellowish/brown after the first frost of the year. The Bermuda grass actually goes dormant during the cooler winter months. For this reason, we Over-Seed with Rye grass, which is a cool season grass that is able to grow in the winter months. The process begins by cutting the Bermuda grass short, a process called scalping, and reducing the water supply, thus forcing the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. We then seed the course with Rye grass and turn the water back on to germinate the Rye seed. Rye grass requires constant moisture until it germinates and matures. October

We hope this helps answer the question of Why OverSeed? and we appreciate your patience during this process.

Player Development Clinic

As part of our Get Golf Ready program, we will be offering a Player Development Clinic on Monday, October 28 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. We will have both full swing and short game stations set up with emphasis on the basic fundamentals of each area. This clinic is limited to the first 20 participants and the cost if just $20 per person. Please sign up in the Golf Shop.

Beth and Jim Grcevich

Jim and Beth Grcevich met and were married in Brunssum, The Netherlands in 1974 where Jim was stationed as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. They continued their travels with a follow-on military assignment to Oslo, Norway for three years and finally returned to the United States in 1979. After being commissioned in the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant, Jim and Beth moved to their next (and last duty assignment) Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM. Here they spent the next 32 years with Jim retiring from the USAF and beginning another 21 year career as a SAIC contractor supporting the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center. Beth started her career while they were in The Netherlands working for the U.S Commissary; she also worked for the Department of Treasury in Albuquerque. A natural when it comes to home decorating, Beth began an 18 year journey as office manager for Rutledge Homes Albuquerques Builder of Luxury Homes. Its here where she honed her home decorating talents while assisting new homeowners with their decorating choices. Jim really enjoyed that as she was spending other peoples money! Knowing that retirement was around the corner for Jim, they began looking for somewhere else to call home something different and somewhere warm. They came to Festival in 2007, fell in love with the area and actually purchased their present home. Once a month they used to drive from Albuquerque, NM to spend a few days at their Festival home and practice retire. In October 2012 they made the decision to retire, move here full-time and enjoy all the amenities Festival has to offer. Both truly enjoy the active adult lifestyle offered at Festival and thoroughly enjoy the workout facilities/pool at the Sage Center. They also enjoy meeting and socializing with their many new friends in the community.

Reduce Alzheimers Risk

At the recent Conference on Nutrition and the Brain, sixteen researchers presented evidence showing why certain habits can minimize risk of Alzheimers and other neurological disorders. Neal Barnard, M.D. presented evidence that we may be able to reduce risk of Alzheimers disease by 70-80%. Just a few good habits can make a huge difference. Minimizing dietary intake of saturated and trans fats is very important. These fats increase cholesterol levels leading to production of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. The plaques are a very common marker for Alzheimers disease. A study presented at the conference showed people who consumed higher levels of saturated fat tripled their Alzheimers risk. A diet rich in vegetables, legumes, whole grains and other foods rich in vitamin B6, folate and many other vitamins and minerals is associated with less risk of cognitive decline. A diet rich in plants also minimizes risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Both of these can play a role in Alzheimers disease. Regular aerobic exercise is also a great way to reduce risk of dementia. A brisk walk of 30-45 minutes three to four times per week can reduce risk by 40-50%. Adequate amounts of vitamin B12, found in fortified foods and in animal products, helps reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid linked to cognitive impairment. An Oxford University study showed vitamin B supplementation in older adults with elevated homocysteine and memory problems helped reduce brain atrophy and improve memory. Avoid excess intake of copper and iron. Excess amounts of these metals have been linked to cognitive problems. Many multivitamins contain both copper and iron. Since most people get plenty of iron and copper in their diet, supplements with these should be avoided unless directed by a physician. The antioxidant, vitamin E is easily consumed in nuts or seeds, papayas, avocados, tomatoes, and spinach. Vitamin E has been linked to reduced risk of Alzheimers. According to Dr. Barnard, food sources for vitamin E are far better than taking supplements. New research is showing risk of Alzheimers can be reduced with some simple lifestyle habits. Exercise, low fat diet and consuming lots of vegetables and legumes can go a long way in reducing risk of cognitive decline.
