PATTERN STITCHES
Stockinette Stitch (St st): Knit on RS, purl on WS. Garter Stitch: Knit all sts, every row. I-cord: With dpn, *k5, without turning the work, slide sts to RH end of needle, pull yarn tightly from the end of the row, (behind the sts); rep from * until cord meas desired length.

NOTE
Bag back, bottom and front are worked flat in one piece then seamed.

BACK
Handle casing With MC, CO 23 sts. Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Rep rows 1-2 until pc meas 3", ending after a WS row. Hem handle casing: (RS) With spare, smaller needle, pick-up 23 sts from the CO edge. Fold knitting with WS together, with spare needle behind working needle in your left hand. With a third needle, *knit 1 st from front and 1 st from back needle together; rep from * across 23 sts. Next row (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Back shaping Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Row 3: K3, m1, knit to last 3 sts, m1, k3 2 sts increased. Row 4: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Rep rows 3-4, five more times 35 sts. Work even Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Rep rows 1-2 nine more times.

Handle casing Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Rep rows 1-2 once more. Place removable marker in last row worked. Cont as est until work handle casing section meas 3" after marked row, ending after a WS row. Work two rows even. Hem handle casing and BO (RS) With spare, smaller needle, pick-up 23 sts along WS of marked row. Fold knitting with WS together, with spare needle behind working needle in your left hand. With a third needle, knit the first st of front and back needles together, *knit next st from each needle together, (2 sts on RH needle), BO 1 st; rep from * until all sts are BO.

SIDES (make 2)
Using long tail cast on, CO 10 sts. Knit 5 rows. Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): K3, p4, k3. Rep rows 1-2 until pc meas 4", ending after a RS row. Knit 4 rows. (WS) BO all sts knitwise.

FINISHING
Block pcs if desired. Body Seaming Using overhand st, use B to sew front and back body pieces to side strips, lining up stitches between the Gtr st rows as shown. Handles With dpn and B held doubled, CO 5 sts. Work I-cord for 12.5". Cut yarn leaving a 12" tail. Thread yarn tail through handle casing and pull handle through casing. Use yarn tail to sew handle into a loop. Slide handle so the seam is covered by the casing. Rep for second handle. Slug Embelishment (also, see chart) Slug Motif: With B, follow chart and duplicate stitch slug and its trail onto the lower front of the bag. Optical Feelers: Working in Back St, sew the lines of the Optical Feelers above the slugs head. Eyespots: Add one French Knot at the tip of each of the Optical Tentacles.
