RIGGING COURSE

AIMS OF THE COURSE

The program has been designed to provide trainees with the knowledge, skills and confidence to work as a Rigger. Rigging is work involving the use of mechanical load shifting equipment and associated gear to move, place or secure a load using plant, equipment or members of a building or structure, and to ensure the stability of those members and for the setting up and dismantling of cranes and hoists. This is done so as to reduce the risk of injury, incidents and accidents to personnel and property. The definition is not intended to include work performed by operators or drivers of mechanical loadshifting equipment, unless the work is part of the process of setting up or dismantling cranes or hoists. Slinging techniques will also be applied. Slinging is the exercising of judgement in relation to the suitability and condition of lifting gear, and the method of slinging, by consideration of the nature of the load, its mass and its centre of gravity. Participants will be required to successfully complete both a written (and oral) and practical assessment to the National Competency Standards, particularly underpinning knowledge and skills, which will provide a nationally recognised qualification. Competency Standards are nationally developed benchmarks for effective performance in the workplace. They are statements that describe the skills and knowledge that people need in order to work to required industry standards. This unit applies to rigging work carried out in accordance with WorkSafe Australia Standards for Intermediate Rigging, which incorporates Basic Rigging.

DURATION
Eight (8) Days

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY
1. Plan and prepare work 2. Select equipment 3. Connect gear 4. Move and position load/s 5. Remove slings and lifting accessories

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

At the end of the course, trainee's will have an understanding of: Legislation Accident Prevention / Safety (General)

ASSESSMENT
Participants will be required to successfully complete both a written (& oral) and practical examination prior to the end of the course in order for them to gain certification. Competency is to be demonstrated by the performance of carrying out rigging processes for the moving of materials and equipment and fixing sections into place. Competency shall be assessed while work is undertaken (in the normal or simulated workplace environment, and in accordance with safe work procedures) under general guidance, checking at various stages of the process, and at the completion of the activity against the performance criteria and specifications. Participants shall be assessed while work is undertaken autonomously, and within a team environment.
Rigging & Slinging Awareness Courses

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) states that "If you are an employer or self-employed person providing lifting equipment for use at work, or you have control of the use of lifting equipment, then the Regulations will apply to you."
