Vector graphics is the formation of digital images using a series of

commands or mathematical statements that position lines and shapes in given 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional spaces. (using the Cartesian (x,y) points). It is described mathematically by geometric forms that include the thickness of the line, the fill colour and additional features of the line that can be expressed mathematically. It is a 1:1 representation scalable to any size without losing quality or accuracy. A bitmap image defines an image as a grid of coloured pixels while A vector shape is most suited for a simple, smooth and clean-looking storing the colour for each pixel in the image. image. Despite having less detail than a bitmap, distortion does not occur on resizing the image. A vector file is occasionally called a geometric file. It is also important to know that vector image files are easier to modify than raster image files. (Which, nevertheless, can sometimes be converted back to vector files for further enhancement) Typically, animation images are also produced as vector files. Bitmaps are best for continuous tone images such as photographs. Minute changes are easily made to bitmap by editing single pixels. Distortion can be caused to the image on resizing it as the pixels are redistributed. Compared to a vector shape, a bitmap usually requires more RAM and disk space. Bitmaps take longer to download from the internet than vector shapes, unless they are compressed. Eventually, a vector image is changed into a raster graphics image, which maps bits directly to a display space (which is sometimes referred to as bitmap). In order for the vector image to be ported between systems, it can be converted to a raster image prior to its display. Software Packages Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, Medusa, CorelDraw, Pure Mac, Adobe InDesign CS5, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Freehand, Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Flash, Inkscape, Serif DrawPlus, Artworks, ACD Canvas, Tgif, Xara Xtreme for Linux.
