“Real knowledge, like everything else of value, is not to be obtained

easily. It must be worked for, studied for, thought for, and more than
all, must be prayed for.” —Thomas Arnold

Now in its third year, the Journal of Undergraduate Research is a peer-

reviewed scholarly journal that seeks to collect, review, and distrib-
ute outstanding academic research and writing produced by under-
graduates in the College of Arts and Letters. Too often, excellent
work by the College’s students has no outlet beyond the classroom.
The Journal endeavors to publish and reveal this work, and therefore
promote further and ongoing achievement in research and writing
that is able to move outside the scope of the classroom.

The Journal’s 23-member editorial board, comprising a diverse ar-

ray of students from the College, has reviewed 70 papers represent-
ing nearly every department in Arts and Letters. The four that are
published here, and the six more that appear in our online edition,
highlight the exceptional and original research undertaken in the
College. For the editors, the papers selected for publication dem-
onstrate the determined pursuit of knowledge at the core of a liberal
arts education. It is our hope that the Journal’s readership has a
similar response.

!CKNOWLEDGMENTS

The Journal of Undergraduate Research editorial board

expresses its sincere gratitude for the dedication, commitment, and
guidance of Vicki Toumayan, Assistant Dean in the College of Arts
and Letters. Without the work of Roque Strew, technical advisor,
graphic designer, and general consultant, the Journal would not
exist as it does. Deans Stuart Greene and Mark Roche guarantee
ongoing support from the College, which enables us to create a thor-
oughly professional and widely distributed Journal. We also thank all
students who submitted their work to the Journal for consideration.
The number of submissions received suggests that students see merit
in having their research published as part of this project. Most im-
portantly, it is the Journal’s readership that makes this publication
possible.
