Lets get ready to rumble

T
HIS Boxing Day, fans of a northern Lincolnshire group will enjoy the return of a Christmas tradition thats ruled the roost at Scunthorpes Baths Hall for quarter of a century. The Rumble Band will reach new heights when it takes to the stage at the new 15 million Doncaster Road venue. The band is no stranger to the Baths Hall stage, having performed there 35 times in 25 years. But the 11-piece act with one remaining original member trumpeter Bill Routledge boasts a fresh line up, with lead singer, three backing vocalists, four on rhythm and three in the brass section. And although the band has reduced in size from its previous 12 and 13 members, the musicians and their fore-runners who make up one of the UKs top 60s-style soul bands were frequent guests at the original venue until it closed in 2005. Guitarist Duncan Peddie has played with The Rumble Band for the last eight years. He is the third longest serving member, behind Matty Smith (trombone) and Bill. Duncan says the secret to the bands longevity is simply sticking to a winning formula. He said: Were a relatively new band compared to maybe what people saw at the Baths Hall but we still play our original classic music of Motown and Northern Soul. We still give the same live performance, look amazing on stage and we will be playing familiar songs for people to sing-a-long and dance to.

TRIBUTE acts to Pixie Lott, Jessie J and Katy Perry will be among the attractions at an event held at Elsham Hall. The event, on Saturday, December 22, will also include a three-course meal and wine. Tickets are priced at 40. Call 01652 688955.

A KIDS colouring competition is to be held at the Brigg Heritage Centre on Friday, December 21 between 10am and 2pm. Call 01724 296771.

A band that holds the record for the most performances at the Baths Hall is set to return to the venue for its 36th appearance, Entertainment Reporter Selina Maycock, caught up with The Rumble Bands guitarist Duncan Peddie to find out how theyre getting ready to rumble in Scunthorpe.
What we tried to do with our latest line up is to stay as faithful to the original artists as we can. We are not a tribute band as such. If people want to label us a tribute, we are a tribute to the music genre rather than the artists. We have shrunk a little bit we are an 11-piece band, as opposed to 13, having lost two members from our brass section but we can deliver the same quality soul music. The band was originally formed in the 1960s and used to play gigs at the South Bank Jazz Club in Grimsby. They soon scored a record deal with Dave Ranshaw, who was lead singer of the band. He has been in retirement for a few years and his replacement was Allan Scorer from Winterton. The band kept on playing through the 1960s and 1970s before folding away. Duncan said it was only because of the worldwide appeal of Live Aid in 1985 that they decided to put on a gig at the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes. That event proved so popular that they decided to carry on and they have gigged ever since. Duncan has played in and out of local bands since he was 16 and currently works for the fire service as a watch manager at Immingham West Fire Station. I used to play in a band called Zebra and local people might remember me from Blue Wizards of Bordeaux he

said. I joined the Rumble Band eight years ago and Ive enjoyed it ever since. But performing with an 11-piece band can be testing at times. He said: Logistically, an 11-piece band is a nightmare. Thankfully for us, everybody is a big fan of music, everybody enjoys playing music and performing with each other. Obviously, on stage we have a bond. Duncan believes soul music is a style that has kept its popularity. He said: For me, soul music is timeless you will always hear the music at discos, you still hear quality soul music on the radio and current rap artists are influenced by soul music. Because its soul, it touches people and the band as well. The band has always had great performances and this has been the driving force behind the bands continuity. In the current economic climate, a lot of people who play in local bands are not getting as much work as they used to. The Rumble Band is no different and given the size of the band, to still be performing in the current climate is miraculous. Over the years, the band has kept its many loyal fans. The fans are really amazing said Duncan. Now we get a lot of young people in the audience. A lot of people go along with friends who wouldnt usually go to a Rumble Band gig so its a first-time experience of soul music. Our original fan base is getting older but we do get many who used to see us perform in the 80s and we still get them now. And it is hoped many fans will rejoin the band at the Baths Hall for a night of nostalgia. Duncan said: I have to say that were really looking forward to returning to the Baths Hall for our first appearance since 2005. We hope it will be a success. We always had a fantastic night there and in the past even had to add additional nights due to huge demand. People can still expect the same big soul sound with songs from the

There were exceptional sell out shows at The Alexandra Palace and The Roof Gardens. RETURNING: The Rumble band on stage

GLEE meets Bring It On with the sassy swagger of Clueless in Jason Moores unabashedly feel-great musical comedy about an all-girl acappella group hoping to pitch slap their well-rehearsed rivals at a national singing competition. Pitch Perfect lives up to its title, delivering a menagerie of memorable characters who are determined to chart a course through life with lyrical guidance from Madonna, Kelly Clarkson and Jessie J. These feisty femmes include an overweight freshman, who refers to herself as Fat Amy so other girls dont do it behind her back, and a softly spoken beatboxer called Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), who wouldnt look out of place in a Japanese horror. I set fires to feel joy! she whispers creepily. Kay Cannons script, adapted loosely from the book by Mickey Rapkin, is truly an embarrassment of riches, peppered with deliciously tart one-liners. Adjectives and nouns are prefixed with aca to create a snappy lingo and surprisingly, we never grow tired of this simple gimmick, from one girl gasping, Aca-scuse me?! to a suitor telling his beloved, Were gonna have aca-children. Its inevitable. Waspish competition commentators John (John Michael Higgins) and Gail (Elizabeth Banks), who was once a member of The Menstrual Cycles, set the tone beautifully in the opening frames. Nothing makes a woman feel more like a girl than a man who sings like a boy, opines Gail as she stares lustily at a group of teen hunks in perfect harmony. The unlikely heroine, however, is Beca (Anna Kendrick), who arrives at Barden College with dreams of becoming a music producer, to the

FUN: Pitch Perfect chagrin of her father, university professor Dr Mitchell (John Benjamin Hickey). He promises to fund a career in Los Angeles if she agrees to become involved in campus life. So Beca reluctantly signs up with The Bellas, who flopped spectacularly at last years sing-off when soloist Aubrey (Anna Camp) projectile vomited over the audience. Aubreys right-hand gal, Chloe (Brittany Snow), is open to Becas bold ideas to reinvigorate the repertoire but Aubrey insists they stick to her songbook of 1990s favourites. New girl Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who claims to be the best singer in Tasmania... with teeth, throws her considerable weight behind Beca but as the competition draws near, tensions are evident. Pitch Perfect lives up to its title, delivering aca-mazing musical performances with plenty of vim and gorgeous harmonies as The Bellas prove they are Dixie Chick serious about winning the championship. stars of Tamla, Stax and even some Northern Soul classics. The Rumble Band rehearses once every couple of weeks because we pride ourselves on a professional performance thats true to its origins. He said: People who come to a Rumble Band gig expect a certain kind of music to be played. We wouldnt want to gamble or do anything to change it in case people dont enjoy it as much. Duncan says the show has plenty of songs to get people dancing in the aisles. He said: One of the songs that gives you that dancing feeling is The Sweetest Feeling by Jackie Wilson. We have just started performing that. Also, The Snake by Al Wilson and any Four Tops number goes down well, so forget those austerity blues come down to the Baths Hall on Boxing Day night and lets party!
