Talent show
Delrans Got Talent hits the
stage Oct. 24. PAGE 2

The traffic of Route 130, the River Line and the
constant movement of life often make it easy to
forget about nature, especially the nearly-hidden
Amico Island Park at the corner of River Drive
and Norman Avenue.
According to Burlington County Park Natural-
ist Jennifer Bulava, the island is completely man-
made, created from the material at the bottom of
the Delaware River from dredging in the 1950s.
Visitors will notice an access point for cars,
which was added for people to drive on. It was pre-
viously an island, according to Bulava, technical-
ly making it a peninsula.
The plants that grow there are the only ones
that can grow in river sediment, Bulava said.
No trees on the island are more than 60 years
old.
Its a beautiful park that has a lot of wildlife.
Its a beautiful place for people to walk and enjoy,
Mayor Ken Paris said. Its peaceful back there.
According to Bulava, October through Febru-
ary is the best time to see a variety of waterfowl
that stay through the winter.
They migrate from the Arctic and stay at the

tains numerous plants able to thrive on a manmade island
created from 1950s dredging sediment. Additionally, wa-
terfowl and herons inhabit the island, making it one of the
best locations on the East Coast to see them, according to
Burlington County Park Naturalist Jennifer Bulava.

Attention students of Delran
Middle School and Delran High
School: Dust off your ventrilo-
quist dummy, tune your tap shoes
and start practicing your jug-
gling, because on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.,
you will have the opportunity to
show off your talent on the big
stage.
The Delran High School Inter-
national Thespian Troupe No.
4646 is hosting its annual
fundraising event Delrans Got
Talent at the Morris R. Burton
Performing Arts Center as a way
for Delran students to showcase
their talent.
Mary Jo Hutchinson and Cara
Davis, both teachers at the Delran
Intermediate School, oversee the
event and say it is something the
students look forward to year
after year.
Its a fun thing for the stu-
dents to be a part of and a way for
the community in Delran to sup-
port their children and the
schools, Hutchinson said. The
students are always excited to
have the opportunity to perform
on stage in front of their friends
and their family.
Interested performers will
have to be available to attend the
screening audition on Wednesday,
Oct. 9 between 4-6 p.m. in the Del-
ran High School auditorium. Per-
formers will also have to attend
the mandatory dress rehearsal on
Wednesday, Oct. 23 between 3:30-6
p.m., which will again be held in
the auditorium.
The Delran High School Thes-
pian Society Troupe No. 4646 is af-
filiated with the International
Thespian Society, and is an honor
society for theater students. The
society conducts various
fundraisers throughout the year
in addition to Delrans Got Tal-
ent to offset the cost of member-
ship for its students.
The teachers from schools in
the district will act as a celebri-
ty panel of judges that will deter-
mine the winners. First prize is a
$100 Visa gift card; second place
will receive a $50 gift card and
third place gets a seemingly more
delicious prize, three large pizzas
from Mikes Pizza and Sub Shop
located on Route 130 in Delran.
The prizes are merely an after-
thought as the performance
itself is the prize for the partici-
pants.
We get a lot of really great,
fun and interesting acts every
year, Hutchinson said. Its excit-
ing to see what the kids will come
up with each year.
The Morris R. Burton Perform-
ing Arts Center is located within
Delran High School, 50 Hartford
Road. Tickets are $5 and can be
purchased from any thespian so-
ciety member, or at the door be-
ginning at 6:15 p.m. To register or
for more information on the event

According to the county parks
website, fall bird migration is ex-
cellent at Amico. More than 20
warbler species can be expected
throughout the fall, as well as rap-
tors, such as the Red-tailed, Red-
shouldered, Sharp-shinned and
Cooper Hawks. The winter water-
fowl, such as the Shoveler and
Green-winged Teal, will arrive at
the island. Butterflies are also ac-
tive through October.
Unfortunately, the butterfly
population has been dwindling
over the years, according to Bula-
va.
Ive only seen one or two in
Burlington County this year,
Bulava said. You may see a few
on the island once in awhile.
From February through June,
more than 100 great blue herons
nest in a colony on an unnamed
island off the south end, Bulava
said.

Special to The Sun
At the Township Council work session
on Tuesday, Sept. 10, I proposed the idea of
a job bank on our new Delran Township
web site.
This job bank will identify and provide
another employment resource for Delran
Township residents who may be seeking
employment from local businesses.
This proposal came about as a reaction
to the tough economic times that many res-
idents of the township are facing and of-
fers the business community an opportuni-
ty to gain access to a viable work force of
Delran residents.
The township will contact more than 300
businesses in Delran Township to notify
them about the availability of the pro-
gram.
The program is simple and cost is mini-
mal. The township will be mailing out mer-
cantile license renewals to more than 300
businesses with an informational notice
enclosed with the renewal application.
The businesses will be able to provide to
the township notices of jobs that may be
available, which will then be posted on the
web site for residents of the township to re-
view and hopefully match a viable work
force with the needs of the business com-
munity in Delran Township.
Although given the tough economic
times, the number of jobs may not be sub-
stantial, the impact on those who may need
employment from this will have a signifi-
cant positive impact on their life.
Council embraced the program and au-
thorized it moving forward utilizing the
townships web site. Anyone who may have
an interest in posting a job opening can do
so by sending an email along with the de-
scription of the job, and the number of
hours needed to jhatcher@delrantown-
ship.org.
The second initiative proposed at the
council work session is to try to make an ef-
fort to contact local businesses that have
vacant property and allow them to list the
information concerning the space on the
townships web site under the Economic
Development portion.
A number of businesses in the past have
inquired, through the township, on the
availability of vacant industrial and com-
mercial sites throughout town to accom-
modate their business. This inventory of
New township website to include job bank resource
N
ew Jersey residents are rich.
Really rich. Were the second-
richest state in the nation, be-
hind only those people two states to
the south in Maryland.
The median household income for
New Jersey residents is $69,667. Thats
pretty good news.
The bad news: That number is
boosted in large part by the states
ridiculously wealthy families. More
than 11 percent of families here have
an income of more than $200,000 per
year.
On the surface, the Garden States
ranking of No. 2 on the list of wealthi-
est states, compiled by 24/7 Wall St., is
a positive sign to our economys health
and future prospects. Dig deeper,
though, and youll see a much differ-
ent story.
New Jerseys unemployment rate
was 9.5 percent in 2012, one of the
worst in the country. The national av-
erage was 8.1 percent. The state above
us on the rich list, Maryland, had a
low unemployment rate of 6.8 percent,
for example. Even worse, the number
of people on food stamps increased
from 8 percent in 2011 to 9.3 percent in
2012.
That is not good news.
Still, our outlook is getting better. As
of August, New Jerseys unemploy-
ment rate was 8.5 percent, according
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Thats the lowest mark since March
2009, when it was 8.3 percent. It also
closed the gap between the national
unemployment rate, which sat at 7.3
percent in August.
But New Jersey needs to help busi-
nesses create more jobs. While the
state gained 60,300 jobs in the past 12
months, it lost 1,500 in August. From
July to August, more than 12,000 work-
ers stopped looking for work and left
the workforce.
Thats not good, either.
Gov. Christie recently revamped the
states business tax breaks in an effort
to add more jobs, but how effective
that will be might take time to tell. Its
a good first step, as any incentive to
add more jobs is a positive step, as
long as the state isnt digging a deeper
debt hole.
The bottom line is our workers need
more jobs because the fact is that,
while a small percentage of New Jer-
sey families are rich, most are still
struggling.
in our opinion
Were rich!!

Lifetime resident Scott Mylam
often visits the park with his 3-

visiting the park since he was a
child.
We come here to walk around.
Theres a lot of deer here,
Mylam said. I like to come here.
Its almost secluded.
The island has multiple ponds
on the 55-acre parcel of land.
According to Bulava, there is a
large beaver lodge at the islands
main pond.
Its the biggest one Ive ever
seen, Bulava said. Beavers are
not the easiest to see. They are
mostly active at night, so the best
way to see them there is early
morning or before the park clos-
es. I occasionally have seen them
out in the cooler months. Its a
pretty neat thing to see.
Visitors to the park also have
the option of fishing, with desig-
nated spots throughout the is-
land.
Ive seen and heard about
perch, pike, pickerel, the three
Ps and occasionally some striped
bass, Bulava said.
Finally, the fall foliage is mak-
ing a come back. According to
Bulava, the island provides some
beautiful colors as the season
changes.
Its very untouched and natu-
ral, Mylam said.

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders started its
seasonal flu and pneumonia vac-
cine clinics for adult county resi-
dents and will continue with a
total of 19 clinics countywide
through Dec. 30.
Residents with computer ac-
cess should schedule their flu
shot by visiting the health depart-
ment website, www.co.burling-
ton.nj.us/health. People can cur-
rently schedule their appoint-
ments online. Residents who have
scheduled their appointment on-
line and bring the printed and
completed consent form will be
fast tracked through the clinic.
Walk-ins may have to wait in line.
In addition to targeting the
usual higher risk groups, such as
those aged 50 and older, people
with chronic medical conditions,
weakened immune or respiratory
systems and pregnant women, all
youths through age 23 are advised
by the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention to receive sea-
sonal flu vaccines this year to re-
duce the spread of flu in schools.
The county clinic is for adults
age 18 and older but parents can
take their children to physicians
for flu vaccines and many other
county locales will be giving the
seasonal flu vaccine, including
Southern Jersey Family Medical
Centers (www.sjfmc.org/) in
Burlington City and Pemberton.
For people who have not been
immunized against pneumonia,
pneumo vaccine is recommend-
ed for people who have not had
one in five years and if the first
one was given before age 65.
The county health department
accepts Medicare Part B to
cover the cost for seasonal flu and
pneumonia vaccines.
A donation of $15 for seasonal
flu vaccine and $25 for pneumo is
recommended by those not cov-
ered by Medicare if residents can
afford it.
People who have Medicare cov-
erage and belong to a managed
care plan or HMO, should go to
their regular health care
providers to receive immuniza-
tions.
