FROM THE DESK OF FR. DENNIS MILLER

Last week, I began talking about music during Catholic Mass and I highlighted music meant to cover an action. This week, Id like to talk about the other kind of music which is prayer that is intended to be sung. To be honest, any prayer that we pray at Mass could be sung. We are probably most used to singing the Holy, Holy, Holy, the Memorial Acclamation, the Great Amen, and the Lamb of God. However, I would really like to compliment the people in this cluster on their singing of the Our Father during Easter and Christmas seasons. I have oftentimes found my heart and mind lifted high by our voices joined together for this prayer. Let me highlight a one prayer that deserves special mention in this category. The Glory to God at the beginning of Mass is an ancient hymn of praise largely focused on Jesus. It uses some scriptural phrases and images but is mostly an ancient hymn composed by an unknown author to be sung. For many years, it was normal for us to speak this prayer. However, this is a prayer specifically developed as a song. Imagine standing around someones dinner table and joining with a group of people to say the words of the song Happy Birthday while a cake with 8 candles is brought out to an adorable little girl in a dress. Or imagine going to a baseball game and standing in the excitement right before a game to say the National Anthem, O, say can you see by the dawns early light... In both of those cases, you would fulfill the obligation but you wouldnt really be in the spirit that those words were intended. Its okay to say Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to people of good will. but, when you really think about it, it doesnt really fulfill the spirit of the prayer. Thats why Ive asked the musicians to treat it just like we do the other parts of Mass and sing it. Music is not intended just to make us happy. Nor is it an afterthought that could be cut out to make Mass shorter. Music in a Catholic Mass is one way we lift our minds and hearts to God in prayer. It is a fundamental means for the entire congregation to join together as one body in praise of God. Please join me in thanking our musicians who do such great work in this area and consider helping with the music ministry at your parish. Phone Number: St. Patricks Britt Faith Formation office was listed in the Mason
City phone book. However, the Rectory phone number was omitted. Please make note of this number - 641-843-3215. It is also listed on the front page of the bulletin each week.
