Word from Principal Martin

Greetings Families! We have started the school year off well! We could not do any of this without our amazing teachers, community partners, and YOU, our parents and families! In this newsletter, we will tell you more about: School Site Council Open House Bus Transportation Parent University

the culture of the Perkins in our school and throughout the community. We are inviting you to join us for our next School Site/Parent Council Meeting on October 17, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. It will follow the Open House event from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on the same night. We will elect officers, discuss the Quality School Plan, and plan for events/activities around the school. For more information, please contact Ms. CorreaGonzalez at 617-635-8601. The Scheduled Meet the Principal Night at Mattapan Library on September 26th from 4 to 6 p.m. has been cancelled.

Open House
We are hosting the Michael J. Perkins Open House on Thursday, October 17th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. We are planning a great number of activities for families, inviting community partners and agencies to provide information about health/wellness, afterschool and enrichment programs, and much, much more. We are also giving raffle prizes! We are looking for volunteers to donate juices, snacks, and/or help at an information station for us. If you would like to volunteer for this event. Please contact the school office at 617-635-8601.

School Site Council

It was a pleasure to meet with many great families at our Meet the Principal Nights at Rons Ice Cream & Bowling and Panera Bread. We had an amazing time!

Bus Transportation
We would like to remind our students and families that riding the bus is a privilege. According to the BPS Guide to Families, riding the school bus is an extension of school. Students know the expectations of riding the bus are: Sit down on the bus. Enjoy the ride. Be respectful.

The School Site Council is a partnership of parents, teachers, and community leaders who use school wide data to implement programming that shapes

We will not tolerate disrespect towards adults, other students, and/or the cars/neighbors that pass by. When a bus driver gives us a written report or we are presented with substantial parent and/or community reports about viewed student misbehavior, an investigation ensues and the consequence for misbehavior is suspension from the bus. After three suspensions, your child may face removal from the bus for the school year. We have a number of families who have communicated that student behavior on the bus has been below expectation and we need your help. We are inviting you to participate in a discussion on Thursday, October 3rd from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. to brainstorm how we can work together to make this better. Please contact the School Office if you plan to attend this discussion so we can plan accordingly.

Parent University
On October 12th 2013, Boston Public Parents will participate in a free internationally renown program called Parent University. This conference, which takes place at Northeastern University in Roxbury, MA, features phenomenal classes and speakers on a range of topics such as early childhood education, healthy cooking, special education, boys education, technology, literacy, mathematics and more. Participants are treated to a free breakfast, lunch, childcare, and an overall experience they wont forget. Principal Martin will be teaching a series at this Fall Session entitled Setting Our Boys Up For Success. If this is something you are interested in, please contact Ms. Correa-Gonzalez for more information. You can also go to the BPS website: http://bpsfamilies.org.
