BANK PROBATIONARY OFFICER REASONING ABILITY PROBLEM SOLVING

In questions of this type, a set of informations are provided in a shuffled manner. This kind of question is very important. A set of five or more questions (number of questions is not fixed) based on a set of factual information. If you can successfully arrange the informations provided in the statements, then you may be able to solve all those five (or more) questions correctly. All you need in such questions is to read the statements carefully and minutely. Having enough practice over these questions will definitely be useful in the examinations. We are enclosing a sample question in order to enable you to develop an acquaintance with the problem. E.g. 1: In a car exhibition seven different companies, viz. Cardiac, Ambassador, Fiat, Maruti, Mercedes, Bedford and Fargo, were displayed in a row facing east such that: (i) Cardilac car was to the immediate right of Fargo. (ii) Fargo car fourth to the right of Fiat. (iii) Maruti car was between Ambassador and Bedford. (iv) Fiat, which was third to the left of Ambassador car, was at one of the ends. Problem of this type can be generally classified into the following. (1) Simple problems of categorisation (2) Arrangement problems. (3) Comparison problems. (4) Conditional selection (5) Miscellaneous problems. Puzzle problems can be solved easily by adopting a systematic and sequential approach towards the given informations. First of all take a quick glance at the question. This would need not more than a couple of seconds. This would help in developing a general idea as to what the general them of the problem is. Next, determine the usefulness of each of the informations and classify them accordingly into 'Actual Information' or 'Primary Information' or 'Negative Information' as the case may be . This can be done in the following way: A. PRIMARY INFORMATION: Statements which give information regarding the number of persons or items and what is the peculiarity of them are called Primary Informations. For example, in the sample problem above, the following sentences makes up 'Primary Information': E.g. : In a car exhibition, seven different companies, viz, Cardilac, Ambassador, Fiat, Maruti, Mercedes, Bedford and Fargo were displayed in a row facing east. B. NEGATIVE INFORMATION : Sentences which gives a negative information are called negative sentences i.e., sentences of the type 'B is not sitting next to A' or 'H is not a hill station'. A negative information does not inform us anything exactly but it gives a chance to eliminate a possibility. C. ACTUAL INFORMATION Whatever remains after putting aside the primary information and negative information can be categarised as actual information. While trying to solve a problem, one should begin with the actual information should be borne in mind.

TYPES OF PROBLEMS
(i) Simple problems of categarisation : This is the most simple type, and in this type the candidate is supposed to analyses the

given data and simply place different items in different categories. Such problems can be easily and quickly solved by constructing table as per the given informations. Directions (Qs. 1-5) : E.g. 2 : There are six persons A,B, C,D, E and F in a school. Each of the teachers teaces two subjects, one compulsory subject and the other optional subject. D's optional subject was History while three others have it as compulsory subject. E and F have Physics as one of their subjects. F's compulsory subject is Mathematics which is an optional subject of bath C and E. History and English are A's subjects but in terms of compulsory and optional subjects, they are just an optional subject of only one of them. The only female teacher in the school has English as her compulsory subject Chemistry is the optional subject for one teacher. 1. What is C's compulsory subject? (1) History (3) Chemistry (5) Mathematics. 2. Who is female member in the group ? (1) A (3) C (2) B (4) D (5) E (2) Physics (4) English

A History Physics Maths English Chemistry C O -

B C O

C C O -

D O C -

E C O -

F O C -

Compulsory subject of F is Mathematics and Mathematics is optional for C and E. Also, F's other subject is Physics, hence it must be his optional subject . Similarly, E's compulsory subject is Physics. D's optional subject is History, hence his compulsory subject should be English. Therefore, A's compulsory and optional subjects are History and English respectively. B's optional subject must be Chemistry, since all other's optional have been determined . We know that History is the compulsory subject of three teachers. So, it is compulsory for A,B and C. The answers are : 1. (1) 2 (4); D is the teacher whose compulsory subject is English. Hence, D is female. 3 (5) 4 (3) 5 (4) You must have noticed that solving this types of problem (on categarisation) is very easy. But when you read the other types, a doubt may emerge as to how to recognise whether a given question is of this type or ,not. Note that, the data in such questions look like plain 'Yes/No' Type facts. (ii) Arrangement Problems In this type of questions, the problem is to arrange a group of people or items according to given specifications. The arrangement may be either in a circle or row, etc. in the case of Arrangement problems, the Actual Information can be further subdivided into Definite Information and Comparative Information according to its characteristics. (i) Definite Information : When the place of any or many object is definitely mentioned , we say that it is definite information.

3. Which of the following has the same compulsory and optional subjects as those of F's? (1) D (2) B (5) None of there (3) A (4) C

4. Disregarding which is the compulsory and which is the optional subject, who has the same two-subject combination as F ? (1) A (2) B (5) None of there (3) E (4) D

5. Which of the following group has History as the compulsory subject ? (1) A, C and D (3) C and D (5) A and D. (2) B, C and D (4) A, B and C

Solution to E.g. 2 : (Qs. 15) : The given information can be analysed as follows. Let 'O' denote optional and 'C' denote compulsory.

(ii)

Comparative information :

When the place of any object or man is not mentioned definitely but only a comparative position ( in comparison to another object or man) is mentioned , we say that it is comparative information. Sentences like "E is on the left and of the bench" and "C is on second position from right" are Definite Informations, which sentences "A is between C and E" and "B and F are sitting together" are comparative informations. Following steps will be useful in solving such problems : (i) Make a diagram of empty species (ii) Using all definite information, fill up as many empty spaces as possible. (iii) Now, move onto the comparative information. Taking these comparative information into account (and also the primary or negative information, if any ) consider all possibilities and choose the one which does not violate any condition. Note : While moving from definite information to comparative information, thing to be noted is that choose the comparative one which is based on a definite one. Such an appropriate choice would save you an extra second or minute. The following problems come under this category : E.g. 3: Directions (Qs 1 and 2 ) : Read the following information carefully and answer the questions given below it : (1) (2) (3) (4) 1. Six persons A, B, C, D, E and F are sitting in a circle with their faces towards the centre. D is on the immediate left of E. A is opposite F B is to the immediate right of A Who is sitting opposite E ? (1) A (4) D 2. (2) B (5) F (3) C

Solution to E.g. 3 :(Qs. 1 2) : The questions are based on a circular sitting arrangement . Note that in a circular arrangement if there are even umbered persons, they should be marked opposite in pairs. In this arrangement, opposite or immediate lefty right can be marked without any delay. Here, there are six persons. Hence, F D C

E [A is opposite F] A

[B is to the immediate right of A ] [D is on the immediate left of E] The remaining person is C] The answers are : 1. (3) 2. (1) E.g. 4 : Directions (Qs. 1-5) . Read the following information and answer the questions given below it : Five persons are sitting in a row. One of the two persons at the extreme ends is intelligent and the other one is fair. A fat person is sitting on the right of a weak person. A tall person is on the left of the fair person and the weak person is sitting between the intelligent and the fat persons. 1. The tall person is at which place, counting from right? (1) First 2. (2) Second (3) Third (4) Fourth (5) None of these Which of the following described the person on the left of the weak person ? (1) Intelligent (2) Fat (3) Fair (4) Tall (5) Cannot be determined 3. Which of the following persons is sitting at the centre ? (1) Fair (4) Tall (2) Weak (3) Intelligent (5) Fat.

Who is sitting to the immediate right of F? (1) D (2) E (5) None of there (3) F (4) B

4.

On whose left is the fat person sitting ? (1) Fair (2) Intelligent (3) Tall (4) Weak (5) Cannot be determined.

5.

If the fair person and the fat person exchange their positions, and so also do the tall and the weak ones, then who will be sitting on the left of the weak person ? (1) Tall (2) Fair (3) Fat (4) Intelligent (5) Cannot be determined

A sales representative plans to visit each of the six companies M, N, P, Q, R and S exactly once during the course of one day. She is setting up her schedule for the day according to the following conditions. 1) 2) 3) 1. She must visit M before N and R She must visit N before Q. The third company she visit must be P. Which of the following must be true of the sale's representatives schedule ? 1) She visits M before Q 2) She visits N before R 3) She visits P before M 4) She visits P before S 5) She visits Q before R 2. If the sales representative visits S first, which company must she visit second? 1) M 3. 2) N 3) P 4) Q 5) R The sales representative could visit any of the following companies immediately after P except 1) S 4. 2) R 3) Q 4) N 5) M If the sales representative visits Q immediately before R and immediately after S, she must visit Q 1) First 4) Fifth 5. 2) Second 5) Sixth 3) Fourth

Solution to E.g. 4 : Int Tall Fair (One of the two persons at the extrence ends is intelligent and the other is fair. A tall person is on the left of the fair person. Hence, fair person must be on the extrence right] Int Weak Fat Tall Fair [A fat person is sitting on the right of weak person. The weak person is sitting between the Intelligent and fat persons] Hence, the arrangement is Int Weak Fat Tall Fair 1. (2) 2. (2) 3. (5) 4. (3) 5. (2); If positions are exchanged as given, the new arrangement will be Intelligent , Tall, Fair, Weak, Fat So the fair person will be on the left of the weak person. (iii) Problems on Comparison : In these questions a comparison of different objects or persons has to be made and conclusions have to be arrived at on the basis of this comparison. The following are some of the many possibilities on the basis of which a comparison can be made (i) (ii) (iii) Comparison of heights Comparison of marks Comparison of ages.

Which of the following could be the order in which the sales representative visits the six companies ? 1) M, S, P, N, R, Q 2) Q, N, P, R, S, M 3) M, R, N, Q, P, S 4) P, S, M. R, Q, N 5) P, R, M, N, Q, S

The following examples would give you an idea of these types of questions : E.g. 5 : Directions (Qs. 1 -5) : Study the following information carefully and answer the questions given below it :

Solution to E.g. 5 First make a rough diagram of the information in the question. Sentence (1) M>N, M > R ['a>b' means to 'she visits a before b'] Sentence (2) N > Q

Combining these two, M >N> Q and M>R. Sentence (3) Now, look for the informations given in each question and combining this with the informations M > N > Q, M > R and P find the answers. 1.(1); Clearly, she visits M before N and N before Q. So, she visit M before Q. 2.(1); S is first 2 S P [P is third from (3)] Also M must be followed by N, Q and R. Hence SMP M must be visited second 3. (5) Since P is third and there are only three places behind P. Also, M must be followed by three N, Q and R. Hence, M Cannot come before P, i.e., immediately after P she can visit any company except M. 4. If Q is visited just before R and immediately after S. the order followed will be M N S Q R. Since P must be in the 3rd place, so we have M N P S Q R, i.e. Q must be visited fifth.

(iv)

Problems on Conditional Selection

In this type of questions, a group of objects or persons has to be selected from a given larger group, according to some given restrictions. The following sample problem would give you an idea of such questions : E.g. 7 : Read the following information carefully and then answer the questions given below it. A, B, C, D, and E are species of bacteria that if introduced into the media P, Q or R, will grow there subject to the following conditions: (i) A will grow only on P or R, but in order for it grow on either medium, D must not be present in that medium. B will grow on P, Q or R, but in order for it to grow on any of those medium, D must be present on that medium. C Will grow on any medium, but in order for it to grow on P, substance T must also be present on the medium. D will grow only on P or Q, but in order for it to grow on either medium, substance S must not be present on the medium. E will grow only on Q, but in order for it to grow there, C must not present on the medium. Which of the following will be a complete and accurate list of the species of bacteria that will grow on Q if T be the only substance present on the medium? (1) C (4) C, D, E 2. (2) E (5) E (3) B, D, E

(ii)

(iii)

(iv)

(v)

5.(1); According to the information, P must be in the third place and the order M N Q must not be violated. This is followed only in the arrangement M S P N R Q. E.g. 6 : Suresh is older than Ramesh and Mohan is younger than Surendar. Murali is younger than Mohan but older than Suresh. Who is the youngest. (1) Suresh (3) Murali (5) Surendar (2) Ramesh (4) Mohan

1.

Which of the following species of bacteria will grow together on P, if no other species of bacteria and no substances are present ? (1) A and C (2) A and D (4) B and D (5) C and E. (3) B and C

Solution to E.g. 6 : Suresh is older than Ramesh Suresh > Ramesh Mohan is younger than Surendar Surendar > Mohan Murali is younger than Mohan but older than Suresh Mohan > Murali > Suresh. Hence, combining, we have Surendar > Mohan> Murali > Suresh > Ramesh.

3.

It is possible for which of the following species of bacteria to grow together on Q ? (1) A, B and D (3) A, C and D (5) C, D and E (2) B, D and E (4) B, C and E

4.

Which of the following species of bacteria will grow on P if substances T and S are present but no other species of bacteria are present ? (1) A, B and D (3) A, C and D (5) C, D and E (2) B, D and E (4) B, C and E

1.(4); From conditions (iii), (iv) and (v) C will grow any medium, hence it will grow on Q, if QT is the only substance present. From (iv), D will grow on Q, since S is the only restriction . From (v) E will grow on Q, Since the substance present is T and C is not present. Hence the answer is (4), i.e C, D, E 2.(4); From condition (ii) straightaway. 3.(2); Since nothing is stated in the question, we will assume that no other substances are present. From conditions (ii) and (v) we get the answer. Condition (iv) is also brought into condition. 4. (1); Since T is present C is one bacteria. Since S is present D cannot come. Hence A will be present. 5. (4); Since S is present with Q, the only bacteria list is C and E. 6. (1); C cannot come since E is present ; B cannot come since D is not present. (v) Miscellaneous : All the problems are not as typical and as purely standardised as we have made them out to be . Many a time the questions are a mix of the various categaries studied till now. We are giving you some additional examples so that you understand the miscellaneous types of problems that may be asked. Eg. 8 : Read the following informations carefully and answer the question given below it : One morning editor Rita Storey tackled the pile of manuscripts on her desk. She read five stories, each by a different author. The authors were Abner, Blake and Ellery (all males) and Celeste and Doris (both females). Each of the stories was about different threat to civilisation (one was about a vengeful mad scientist). One of the authors had the surname James. There are eight clues : (1) Rita read the five stories in the order from first to last : the story moon, the by Doris, Land's Lost, and the story about an impending ice age. Elle'ys story and Nightmares both take place on Earth. Of the two Rita read the on that

5.

Which of the following is a complete and accurate list of the species of bacteria that will grow on Q if S is the only substance present ? (1) B, D (4) C,E (2) B, E (5) D,E (3) C, D

6.

If E acquires the ability to grow on any medium that A is growing on, which of the following species of bacteria can grow together on P if no other bacteria and no other substances are present ? (1) A and E (3) A, C and E (5) B, D and E (2) C and D (4) A, D and E

As Rita set down Mr lrving's manuscript and picked up October Oppression she realised that she knew both authors personally, and that they were soon to be married to each other. Henderson's story and the story about killer plants take place, not necessarily respectively , on Mars and Venus; Rita didn't read these two stories consecutively. Blake didn't write Mushroon Machines ; Before reading their stories. Rita had never heard of the authors of either the story set Mans or the one about hostile aliens. After finishing Celeste's story. Rita read at least one other story before getting to Killer time. Who has written about a Vengeful Mad Scientist ? 1) Abner 2) Blake 3) Celeste 4) Can't be detrmined 5) None of these 2.
