38, Reading Topic: The Amish Time: 50 minutes Aims: - To introduce new vocabulary - To get the students interested in the lifestyle of another culture - The students will find the essential information - To gat the students to cooperate in order to perform a written task Skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening Classroom interaction: individual work, pair and group work Resources: Textbook, handouts, blackboard Activity 1: Warm-up The teacher checks the homework The teacher asks pupils if they know any groups of people who are have a different way of life than their own. (religious groups, ethnic groups, etc) this should stimulate the students imagination and their knowledge of the surrounding world. Individual work 8 minutes Activity 2: Pre-reading The teacher asks the students to look at the picture on page 70 and describe the people in the picture, say if they think it is an old picture or a contemporary one, argue why The teacher tells them that those people are called Amish and asks if the pupils have any knowledge of this community. The teacher shares some extra information with the pupils. Individual work 5 minutes Activity 3: Reading The students start reading the text out loud (the teacher pays attention to pronunciation) and find any unknown words. The teacher writes the unknown words on the blackboard. The students are divided in groups of four, each group being assigned a paragraph from the lesson. The students have to read them carefully. The teacher hands out pieces of paper to each group, containing questions related to each paragraph. The students have to answer orally. The teacher corrects any mistakes. 22 minutes Activity 4: Post reading The teacher gives the students a few minutes to look through the entire text and gives the students a true/false exercise concerning the entire text. The teacher writes the sentences on the blackboard. Pair work 8 minutes Activity 5: Follow-up The teacher asks the students if they would enjoy such a life and give reasons why/ why not.individual work The teacher gives marks for the active students. 5 minutes Activity 6 Homework assignment: finding all the IF clauses in the text 2 minutes 1
