Work Placements are the Key to Success

Springboard learner Terri Chapman is celebrating securing an employed advanced apprenticeship position with her placement provider having proved that she is an essential member of their team. Springboard Hartlepool learner Terri started in a placement with Footprints on Tees Street in Hartlepool in September 2012. Suzie Yeniceri the Business Manager for Footprints Day Nursery said; "Within a very short period of time we realised just how capable Terri was. We feel that she has a natural gift for working with children, and she fit right into our organisation from day one." Whilst in placement Terri worked hard to complete an NVQ level 2 and impressed her new employers so much that they have taken her on as a member of staff which will enable her to stay with them and complete an Advanced Apprenticeship level 3. Terri said; "I love my job and the children here. Footprints has been a fantastic placement for me and have been so supportive. I cant wait to get started on my new advanced apprenticeship programme." Caitlin Spencer has been on placement at Oscars Playcentre since the Easter 2013 holidays where she has been gaining valuable work experience prior to commencing her childcare qualification with Springboard Hartlepool. The Oscars Playcentre at West Hartlepool Rugby Club was established by Hartlepool Borough Council in 1993 and is rated outstanding by Ofsted. Assistant Manager Claire Gibson could not speak highly enough of Caitlin saying; "She is very reliable and has integrated well with all of the staff here. Most importantly though, the children love her." Caitlin hopes that this essential work experience and her qualifications will help her get a full-time job. Malcolm Douglass, Springboard's Placement Officer said; "Oscars have been a very supportive placement. Manager Sandra Robinson, Claire and all the rest off the staff have welcomed Caitlin, and the experience she can take from this will stand her in good stead for the future. In return Oscars have had an excellent extra pair of hands on board to help at busy times on a day to day basis.

With the increased focus on vocational, workrelated and enterprise learning, work experience for students has become more important than ever.

Sheer hard work and determination made sure Zoe Boyd got employment with her placement provider Throston Primary School. Zoe was determined from the start of her course to achieve her Level 2 NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning and gain employment at end of her qualification. She starts her new role this September. Her Tutor Melanie Hunter said: Zoe has worked hard to achieve her qualification and has become a valued team member within Throston Primary School. During observations Zoe demonstrated excellent communication skills. The children respect her and clearly learn new skills from her. Good Luck Zoe! If you can give a young person some work experience or offer a placement we would love to hear from you.....

As the Foundation Learning programme came to an end in the Summer, we arranged a number of days out for our FL learners to reward them for their hard work over the past 8-12 months.
As a treat for completing their qualifications, the sport learners were rewarded with a trip to Point Blank Paintball in Darlington. The boys who have now progressed onto Further Education and employment, thoroughly enjoyed their day out getting very muddy and covered head to toe in bruises. There was also a challenging day out to Roseberry Topping in North Yorkshire climbing over 1,049 feet (320m), to the summit to enjoy

some spectacular views over Teesside and North Yorkshire. A number of FL learners were also rewarded with a day at Center Parcs, near the Lake District. All the young people had a fantastic day; enjoying water activities on the lake and water park as well as hiring bikes to blaze trails around the forest.
Our strong partnership with Endeavour Trust continues. The latest group have recently completed their 6 week course. Learners took part in a range of outdoor challenges and team building activities. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the course and a number of students demonstrated some excellent climbing skills throughout the course.

Studio news.....
Tower Design continues to provide great products for our customers and is also an excellent learning platform for our young graphic design apprentices. A number of recent achievements in the Advanced Graphic Design Apprenticeship Programme mean that although we say a sad goodbye to these talented young people, we are safe in the knowledge that their years work experience in the studio, will help them achieve bigger and better things, be it in Higher Education or the field of design and print. Studio Manager Helen Smith said: I would encourage everyone to go and view our facebook page, browse the work that comes out of the studio and like us. The apprentices really do produce some great work for our customers.
