Ravens looking to recapture Super form

By ALAIN POUPART @apoupartFins The Baltimore Ravens come to Sun Life Stadium this afternoon as the defending Super Bowl champions, but a lot of things have changed for them since the beat the San Francisco 49ers at the Superdome last February. The Ravens come to South Florida with a 2-2 record after dropping a 23-20 decision against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. It has been, to put it mildly, a struggle so far for the Ravens, who endured significant personnel losses after winning the second Super Bowl title in franchise history. The offense still revolves around quarterback Joe Flacco, the Super Bowl MVP, but hes had to work without his two more reliable receivers from last year Anquan Boldin and Dennis Pitta. Boldin was traded to the 49ers in the offseason after the Ravens determined they could not fit him under their salary cap, while Pitta was put on injured reserve with a designation to return after sustaining a hip injury in practice. Wide receiver Torrey Smith has emerged as Flaccos go-to receiver in 2013, but nobody else has really stepped up and dropped passes have been a problem. It also hasnt helped that the running game has been ineffective in the early going. Ray Rice, who has been slowed by a hip injury, is averaging a paltry 3 yards per rushing attempt and thats the best figure on the team. The offensive line has four of the starters back from last years Super Bowl team, with the one exception being Gino Gradkowski replacing the retired Matt Birk. On the other side of the ball, the Ravens had to replace the two greatest defensive players in franchise history Ray Lewis, who retired, and Ed Reed, who was allowed to leave via free agency and signed with Houston. There still remains marquee talent on defense, starting with nose tackle Haloti

Things havent gone smoothly for Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco and the Baltimore offense this season, but Terrell Suggs (55) is off to a great start on defense.

Ngata and pass rusher Terrell Suggs. Suggs is off to a tremendous start this season, with a sack in each of Baltimores first four games. That Ravens looked awfully bad in the NFL opener when the Denver Broncos put 49 points on Baltimore, but weve come to find out there arent many teams around able to slow down Peyton Manning and company. Baltimore rebounded on defense in victories against Cleveland and Houston, and the Ravens have been solid against the run most of the season. The pass defense also has come around since that forgettable opener at Denver. Still, it has not been a great start for the Ravens. Then again, the Ravens proved last year they could get hot once they got to the playoffs when they won the Super Bowl after losing four of their last five in the regular season to finish with a 10-6 record. Whats also good news for the Ravens is

that their 2-2 record has them tied for first in the AFC North with Cleveland and Cincinnati, with Pittsburgh winless after four games. The question for the Ravens is whether they can recapture their championship form and, directly relating to the Dolphins, whether well see that kind of performance this afternoon.

RAY RICE
Pos.: Running back Ht: 5-8 Wt: 212 NFL Exp: 6th year How Acquired: Draft, 2008, 2nd round Of Note: Rice has been a fixture in the Ravens downhill running attack, but he can also be a huge factor catching the football out of the backfield and in the screen game.

Pos.: Quarterback Ht: 6-6 Wt: 245 NFL Exp: 6th year How Acquired: Draft, 2008, 1st round (18th overall) Of Note: Flacco has become the leader of this franchise and is coming off a Super Bowl XLVII victory, after which he was named the games Most Valuable Player.

HALOTI NGATA
Pos.: Nose tackle Ht: 6-4 Wt: 340 NFL Exp: 8th year How Acquired: Draft, 2006, 1st round (12th overall) Of Note: Ngatas presence in the middle of the Baltimore defense is imposing and hes a hard body to move in the run game. Most of the time hell take on the double team, allowing the linebackers to roam free and make plays.

TERRELL SUGGS
Pos.: Outside linebacker Ht: 6-3 Wt: 260 NFL Exp: 11th year How Acquired: Draft, 2003, 1st round (10th overall) Of Note: Suggs notched a sack in each of the first three games of the season, showing that he still has the speed and quickness to get to the opposing quarterback. He also has a knack of stripping the football loose.

The Ravens Run Offense

It all starts with the diminutive Ray Rice, who is trying to get healthy after injuring his hip versus the Cleveland Browns in Week 2. The six-year veteran has 34 career touchdowns and has proven to be durable, only missing one game in five years. Reserve running back Bernard Pierce gives the Ravens a nice one-two punch, but Head Coach John Harbaugh definitely needs more production out of his ground game. The Ravens averaging only 77.3 yards in their first three games in 2013. The middle of the Ravens run defense has been solid ever since Haloti Ngata was drafted eight years ago out of Oregon. Hes big, athletic and difficult to move off the line of scrimmage at 340 pounds. Local product Josh Bynes out of Boyd Anderson High School benefits from the attention Ngata receives and ranked second on the team in tackles after three games. Also, outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs have a knack for making plays from the back side because of their play speed.

The Ravens Run Defense

The Ravens Pass Offense

Quarterback Joe Flacco is trying to follow up a Super Bowl victory and a game Most Valuable Player award this season without his favorite target from last year, Anquan Boldin. So far in 2013, Flacco hasnt produced gaudy numbers, but he seems to be getting comfortable with receivers Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones. Veteran tight end Dallas Clark was second on the team in receptions through three games, but must start to play a bigger role in the red zone. The pass rush starts at linebacker in this 3-4 defense with Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs. Dumervil is still highly productive in his eighth season and Suggs produced at least one sack in each of the first three games of the 2013 season. Its a tough job replacing a player like Ed Reed, but rookie Matt Elam has the speed and the instincts you need to patrol the middle of the secondary. His maturity might be one of the keys for this defense to progress according to plan.

The Ravens Pass Defense

The Ravens Special Teams

Solid is the word for the Ravens kicking crew when I look at placekicker Justin Tucker and punter Sam Koch. Tucker was 5-of-7 through the first three games and one of those misses was from plus 50 yards out. Koch was averaging 49.5 per punt and 42.1 yards net. The return game added a spark against the Texans when punt returner Tandon Doss went 82 yards for a touchdown. He has dependable hands and has shown the ability to be explosive already this season.

Two of the teams 10 meetings have gone to overtime, with the Dolphins winning both games 9-6 on Nov. 16, 2003 and 22-16 on Dec. 16, 2007. The game-winner in 2007 came on a 64-yard pass from Cleo Lemon to Greg Camarillo. Only once in the teams 10 meetings have the Dolphins and Ravens both scored at least 20 points. That was in the 2004 season finale in Baltimore when the Ravens pulled out a 30-23 victory.

RAVENS EDITION

One of the Dolphins touchdowns in that 2004 game came on a kickoff return by Wes Welker. It was Miamis first kickoff return for a touchdown since 1989 (Marc Logan at Houston).

The Dolphins have had two 300-yard passing performances against the Ravens by Lemon (315 yards) in 2007 and by Chad Pennington (314) the following season.

The Dolphins held Baltimore under 10 points in three of their five victories against the Ravens. One of those was a 19-6 decision in 2000 on the night the Dolphins honored Dan Marino following his retirement.

In seven career regular season games against the Ravens, Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace has 31 catches for 426 yards and one touchdown. Wallaces best day against Baltimore came in the 2011 season opener when he had eight catches for 107 yards.

The game looked early on like it would be a shootout as the Ravens and Dolphins traded touchdowns on the first two possessions of the game. Ronnie Brown scored Miamis only touchdown on a 12-yard run, one play after the Dolphins converted a third-and-7 from the Baltimore 33 with a 21yard pass from Chad Henne to Brandon Marshall. Trailing 13-7, the Dolphins had a chance to take the lead right before halftime, but Hennes pass to tight end Anthony Fasano on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line fell incomplete and Miami settled for a Dan Carpenter field goal. Cameron Wake led the Dolphins defensive effort with two sacks, while linebacker Karlos Dansby led the team with 10 tackles, including two for a loss.

GAME DAY
HEAD COACHS CORNER | GETTING TO KNOW | COACHING STAFF | FOOTBALL OPERATIONS | 2013 MIAMI DOLPHINS

Head Coach Joe Philbin tackles a variety of subjects, including the keys to the Dolphins fourth-quarter success, the teams mental toughness, and the development of Rishard Matthews and Nolan Carroll

Q. How would you describe the teams mental toughness?

JP: Its a good group. These guys are professional. They work very hard. They come into the building and give us an honest days work. Its a good group to coach. I like the way they are working.

Q. What has helped make this team be so successful in the fourth quarter?
JP: I think in a couple of situations, its more of a function of our guys. They invest an awful lot of time in this profession. They are hungry and they want to win. In the fourth quarter, youve got to step up and make plays if you want to win games. I think its more that inner desire, that chemistry the guys have together. They want to get things done. Theyve got to do everything they can within their power to play as well as they possibly can. I think thats maybe more so than any play call or anything else that may occur in the fourth quarter.

Q. How has Ryan Tannehill grown this year, from your perspective?
JP: I think a couple of things. Hes got 1,000 reps in the bank, thats number one, so we think his play speed is a little bit better than it was a year ago. We think some of the guys that have come to the ballclub Brandon (Gibson) and Mike (Wallace) have helped him a little bit. Brian (Hartline) is a guy he has a lot of faith and confidence in. So I think all of those things the experience, the play speed, the different weapons hes had at his disposal have helped him.

Wide receiver Rishard Matthews has impressed the Dolphins coaches with his toughness and his competitiveness.

ball with his hands, and he likes to compete. He can run, and he thinks hes a good player, which is a good thing to have. He likes to play the game and he likes to practice.

pillow and know that guy is going to give you everything hes got.

Q. How much improvement have you seen from cornerback Nolan Carroll?
JP: I think hes more consistent. Obviously he made that one real, real nice play on the ball in the first game. I think it was the first drive of the first game. Hes a competitive guy. Hes very, very competitive. He comes out and works hard every single day. Hes certainly gotten better. His transitions have gotten better. His coverage ability has improved. I like the way he plays the game. He competes. You can put your head at night into a

Q. How important is eliminating penalties?

JP: Our guys are disciplined. They have done a good job of playing within the rules. One of the things I think has been good on defense is our targeting when we are tackling has been very good. Weve hit quarterbacks a number of times, and our guys have been very good and disciplined about the discipline of the hit and not going too high, and the same thing with the receivers. Thats got to be part of our game. It has to be part of the way we play. We take a lot of pride in that, and weve got to keep working on that.

Q: What does Rishard Matthews add to the receiver rotation?

JP: Hes a tough guy. He likes football. Hes very competitive. He catches the foot-

QUARTERBACKS COACH

If you werent coaching, what would you be doing right now?

Id be involved in athletics somehow, athletic administration or something along those lines. But I think it would be hard to be away from sports. Its all Ive known my whole life, so probably something along those lines.

I think it would be hard to be away from sports. Its all Ive known my whole life.

Whats something youve learned about one of your players this summer?
It would be Matt Moore and the fact that he bought an RV in the offseason. I cant picture Matt Moore driving around in an RV with his daughter, Aubrey, and his wife (Tara). But hes got an RV and I guess hes planning on driving around the country at some point, and its harder for me to imagine him doing it, but thats something I learned this summer that he did and Id like to see pictures of him and his family in that RV.

Whats your favorite thing about your job?

I think the best thing about this job is Ive got great guys in my room, the quarterback group is a great group of people, and then everybody we work with is great. Everybody in this facility and in this organization is topnotch, so the work environment and the people here make it fun to come to work every day. on TV. I wouldnt say that I lived or died with the Cowboys wins and losses every week, but that was the team I watched every game, Troy Aikman and all those guys. But I wouldnt say I had a favorite team growing up. Truth be told, Peyton Manning was my favorite player. When he was playing at Tennessee, I was in middle school and fun-

Which coach has had the biggest influence on your career?

Coach (Mike) Sherman, no question. Id say Coach Sherman and my dad. My dad was a coach and he coached me in youth sports growing up, so he taught me the fundamentals and that got me started. Then Coach Sherman has taken it from there and taught me the ins and outs of the game, so between those two I owe them a lot of credit.

What were your favorite team and player growing up?

Im from Oklahoma, so we didnt have a pro team. Yeah, the Cowboys were always

damentally he was always the best, and he was always a smart quarterback, so it was easy for me to try to emulate that as I was growing up.

JOE PHILBIN
Head Coach

ADAMS

ANARUMO

BULLEN

Entering his second season as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Joe Philbin led the team to a 7-9 record and a second-place finish in the AFC East in 2012. Working with one of the youngest rosters in the NFL, Philbin had the Dolphins in playoff contention until the penultimate week of the season while improving the teams record from the previous year. Philbin was named the 10th head coach in Miami Dolphins history on January 20, 2012. As a measure of the respect Philbin earned in his first year as the teams head coach, he was named to the Coaches Subcommittee of the NFL Competition Committee by Commissioner Roger Goodell on April 15, 2013. He also was chosen by the league to make a presentation at the NFLs Career Development Symposium at the Wharton School of Business this past May. Prior to joining the Dolphins, Philbin served as the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator from 2007-11. He originally joined the Packers on Feb. 10, 2003 as assistant offensive line coach. He was elevated to tight ends/assistant offensive line coach on Feb. 27, 2004. Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy promoted Philbin to offensive line coach on Jan. 17, 2006, and then to offensive coordinator on Jan. 15, 2007. Born in Springfield, Mass., Philbin is a 1984 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.), where he played tight end (1980). He also possesses a masters degree in education from Tulane University (1986). He is married to Diane, and the couple has five children Matthew, John, Kevin, Tim, Colleen and a deceased son, Michael.

Jeff Ireland was named the Dolphins General Manager on Jan. 2, 2008, and is now in his sixth season in that position with the team. He joined the club after a seven-year stint (2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including his last three seasons there as the teams vice president of college and pro scouting. In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland is not only responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college and pro personnel departments, but also helps manage the teams salary cap and player contracts. He supervises all scouting efforts that relate to the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League, and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. Ireland works hand-in-hand with Head Coach Joe Philbin in implementing a personnel plan to build the Dolphins into a championship-caliber team. In Irelands five seasons in Miami, he has built a nucleus of talented young players that have the Dolphins positioned for longterm success. He developed a plan that would give the team the flexibility and the capability to bring talented newcomers to the team heading into the 2013 season, and carried out that plan by using all the tools at his disposal. Jeff and his wife, Rachel, have three daughters, Annie and twins Haley and Hannah, and a son, Riley. The Irelands, working closely with the Dolphins and the Dan Marino Foundation, have helped spearhead WalkAbout Autism, an annual event at Sun Life Stadium which has raised more than a million dollars over the past three years. The Irelands also have co-chaired the Autumn Moonlight Event each October since 2008 to help raise awareness and money to benefit the Nova Southeastern University/University of Miami Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD).

The Dolphins are getting a lot of production out of their four wide receivers

I love those guys. Theyre great players. We all work hard.

MIKE WALLACE (11)

42 FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK

Back in mid-May, just before the Miami Dolphins hit the field for their first set of OTAs, fifth-year wide receiver Brian Hartline boldly proclaimed on NFL Network that his receiving corps was absolutely the best in the AFC East. So far, its hard to argue that point. Miami ranked ahead of the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills in the critical receiving categories during its 3-0 start, and that included passes caught by the tight ends and running backs. But quarterback Ryan Tannehills top three receivers Hartline, Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson

Were a unit. We try to just be there for each other and help when its needed.
BRANDON GIBSON (10)

were a very effective trio early on. Secondyear receiver Rishard Matthews broke out two weeks ago against the Atlanta Falcons with four catches for 42 yards to give Tannehill a legitimate fourth option among the wideouts. He came in at a critical time and made a big third-down catch for us on the right sideline, I believe in the third quarter, Tannehill said. Then on the last drive he came in and made some big catches for us. To be able to have him be a part of our offense, kind of integrate him a little bit, is huge and hes making plays. When Hartline made that statement on television, he was including veteran tight end Dustin Keller in the group based on Kellers stellar production over the years with the New York Jets. Keller was lost for the season to a knee injury in the third preseason game at Houston, but third-year tight end Charles Clay has stepped in admirably. Still, its the foursome that is the driving force behind the type of production Tannehill has shown in the passing game and they lean on each other. Were a unit. We try to just be there for each other and help when its needed, said Gibson, who is in his fifth season in the league All of us can play each position, so we just make sure that we communicate and make sure we do the right thing on the field. Hartline was Tannehills favorite target last year during the quarterbacks rookie season and caught 74 passes for 1,083 yards and a touchdown. He doubled his touchdown numbers in three games and has seen the benefit that having a speed threat like Wallace on the outside brings in terms of opening things up for him and the other receivers. There already is a sense of camaraderie among the receivers to the point where they feel comfortable making jokes at the others expense. Hartline had a little fun in the days leading up to the Monday night game at New Orleans pretending that all of them fit the diva receiver stereotype and dont get along, saying each of them wants the ball and each of them likes to talk about themselves. Wallace played along. Were cool. I dont really like them that much. Theyre all right. They cant really come too close to me, though, he said with a smile. No, I love those guys. Theyre great players. We all work hard. Were going to clown around but at the same time once we get on the field were all going to work as hard as we can to get better. Were going to help each other out. Whatever I can do to help them Im going to do it, whatever they can do to help me theyll do it, so were out here for each other. We want to see each other rise to the

occasion every single time, make the best catches, run the best routes, make the best plays and we want success for each other. I think as long as we have that, nobodys being selfish and you just want the best for youre brother, well do well. Now that Tannehill has spread the ball around to nine different receivers, including running backs Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas and the other two tight ends, Michael Egnew and Dion Sims, it forces opposing defenses to choose their options. The Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons opted to keep a safety high on whichever side Wallace lined up to take away his deep route, holding him to three receptions for 22 yards in those two games. The Colts tried to take away Hartline and Gibson and paid the price, as Wallace caught a careerhigh nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and Clay added a career-high 109 receiving yards on five catches. It was Hartline and Gibson who were the beneficiaries against the Browns and the Falcons, combining for 27 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns. Hartline could not single out one particular play when he saw the field open up for him thanks to Wallace drawing extra coverage and he thinks thats because its not just Wallace influencing the defensive calls. I dont think anyones getting doublecovered because you cant game-plan for one person, Hartline said. The hardest person to double-cover is probably Brandon because Brandon is in the slot, so he might get some in-and-out coverage, but if youre doing that, then you leave someone else open. What has been most encouraging so far is the trust Tannehill has shown in the entire offense and how he has not locked on to just one or two receivers. He surveys the field and isnt afraid to pick his second or third option rather than force a throw into tight coverage. Considering how new Wallace and Gibson are to the team, thats a credit to their work in practice and in the meeting room. I think the familiarity that our quarterback has with the receivers and the receivers with him at this point is higher than it was a year ago possibly, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said. Matthews came on strong at the end of last season as a seventh-round draft choice and started to develop a rapport with Tannehill over the last month. He finished with 11 catches for 151 yards and earned the

fourth and last wide receiver spot on the roster this year in training camp. Everybody, from Gibson, Wallace, Hartline, Tannehill and Head Coach Joe Philbin, describes Matthews the same way, as a tough player who is very competitive, has sure hands and is not afraid to go across the middle and absorb contact. His two clutch catches on the final scoring drive against Atlanta both were made in the middle of the field for a combined 16 yards and a first down. Matthews points to the other three veteran receivers as the reason for his progress. Im learning from Hartline, Wallace and Gibson at the same time and theyre doing a good job at letting me know what I need to do, what I need to work on and what I need to study, Matthews said. Mike, hes just speed, so I definitely learn speed from him. Brandon, hes real technical with his routes,, so Im learning that and watching him on film and him letting me know what I need to do coming in and out of my breaks faster. Hartline, hes like another coach out there, so learning a lot from all of them is really helping me out. With Matthews continued development and the different strengths all of the other three receivers bring to the offense, it has expanded the options not only for Tannehill but also for Sherman and Philbin. It has also allowed the group to stay effective for four quarters. These guys play fast. They play a lot of snaps. They play hard, said Philbin, who made use of a variety of receivers in Green Bay when he was the Packers offensive coordinator. We ask a lot of these guys, and the more guys you have to keep guys fresher we think is great. Its the opposing defensive coordinators who dont think its that great.

Dolphins help honor Sun Life Rising Star Award winners

By TRISTIN JONES In its fourth year, the Sun Life Rising Stars Awards program is continuing to reward highly motivated senior high school students and nonprofit organizations in the South Florida community for their unrelenting dedication to the betterment of South Florida. As part of the award distribution, students were surprised at their respective high schools by Miami Dolphins players, cheerleaders, the MDWO, and members of Sun Life Financial. Each of the four winning nonprofits was presented with a $50,000 grant and each student award recipient was presented with a $5,000 check to help toward financing their college education. The first stop of the surprise visits was made to Angel Lopez at Estero High School. Members of the MDWO presented him with his check for his work with New Horizons of Southwest Florida. The surprises continued as Dolphins guard Richie Incognito helped to award Vanessa Civil for her work with Childnet at

THIS ISSUE: Troy Drayton

The Finsiders is the Miami Dolphins multimedia show that airs every weekday afternoon from 5-7. The show can be heard on 940 AM in South Florida and watched live in high definition anywhere in the world on Dolphins.com. The show is anchored by Jesse Agler and each day, two analysts join him to break down the latest Dolphins, NFL and sports news. The highly interactive show also features the opinions of Dolphins fans from around the world. They can text their questions and comments to 347347; they can participate in the shows live chat, which is a place for the fans and the on-air personalities to discuss the days topics; and they can reach out to the host and analysts on Twitter. Finsider and former Pro Bowl Dolphins guard Troy Drayton shares his experiences facing a defending Super Bowl champion with Sean Grimm in this installment of Finsiders Focus. Much like the Dolphins will face today against the Baltimore Ravens, I realized we were playing the Super Bowl champions as soon as the schedule came out. The game always stuck out like a sore thumb. We played four of them when I was with the team. I would say to myself, This is exactly the kind of test this team needs. You always circle this game on your schedule. You get to go against the Super Bowl champions and the first thing you think is, I am ready to lace my shoes back up I am so excited! For this team to get to where they want to go, whether its simply making the playoffs or reaching the Super Bowl, you have to beat the best. Period! If you cant get excited about this game, you dont have a pulse. Thats just one of the many reasons why it is such a great test. My memories of facing defending Super Bowl champions are as follows: In 1996, we had the Dallas Cowboys at home and they beat us, 29-10. It was terrible watching that game from the sidelines, because I just hurt my knee the week before and the medical staff wanted me to rest my knee. I wanted to play against them. I wasnt happy, to say the least. Losing sucks. In 1997, we went to Green Bay for a

matchup against the Packers. Favre vs. Marino. You cant get any better than that. I remember catching a few passes, but more than anything I remember how upset I was after we lost the game. They topped us, 2318. The next year in 1998, we battled the Broncos in Miami. It started as Marino vs. Elway but turned into the Lamar Thomas show. I mean, he did have three touchdowns. It was Monday night football and it was a magical night beating the Broncos. Oh, and I

had three catches for 64 yards, which was over 21 yards per catch. I was balling! Finally, in 1999 we got to play the Broncos again. This time it was in Denver, but we got them again. Elway vs. Marino, take two. I remember getting free in the back of the end zone and catching a touchdown, but my foot was on the back line, so my touchdown was called back. I hate big bold lines on fields, but we went into Mile High and kicked the Broncos' butts. Oh, and I caught two passes for 21 yards.

Who set the bar at your position?

Stradford: I think Bo Jackson set the bar. Roger Craig set the bar as well.

What player did you admire growing up?

Stradford: Tony Dorsett.

What was the most memorable moment of your career?

Stradford: That would be my rookie year against the Dallas Cowboys. It was my best overall performance, statistic-wise, in the National Football League and I believe it was the first game the Dolphins were going to feature me in the game. And Tony Dorsett, my idol, was on the sidelines, so I did all of this in front of my idol. Ill never forget that.

What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career?

Stradford: I have to say my running back coach at Boston College, Bucky Godbolt.

THE LAST WORD

Andy Cohen In The Morning appears every Monday through Friday on Dolphins.com until the end of the season, except for the bye week. The column is posted each day at 6 a.m.
It is no coincidence that Dion Jordans cubicle in the Dolphins locker room is situated right between Cameron Wake and Richie Incognito. The idea is simple and well thought out: Follow the leaders, watch how they prepare, listen to their words and, when necessary, pick their brains. I know Im right here for a reason, said Jordan, gazing over at Wake, who is surrounded by cameras and tape recorders. They want me to feed off of these guys. In Incognitos case, he is one of the outspoken leaders of this team. He will say anything to anyone and if the tall lanky rookie with the big contract takes a wrong turn, Incognito will steer him in the right direction. But Wake has a much larger role in this crash course of sorts for Jordan, the same role Jason Taylor and Joey Porter had when Wake was a rookie. Wake is the mentor, the guidance counselor, the dietician, the confidant. How lucky is Jordan? Hes got one of the top three pass rushers in the league sitting right next to him, offering advice whether it is solicited or not. He sits next to me in the defensive meeting room as well, Wake said. Hey, when I first got here I didnt know anyone in the state of Florida. Didnt know where to get my car washed. Didnt know where to get my hair cut. The older guys helped me a lot and I want to be there for him. We go out sometimes. We talk. I think its important. Important for Jordan to get a feel for what this life is all about. But even more important for Jordan to become a bigger factor on this defense. There are high expectations that come with being the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. You expect first-year production. You expect big plays. You expect clear signs that the Dolphins made the right choice. So far it hasnt been the easiest of paths

Jordan keeping good company

First-round pick Dion Jordan has some established veterans around him to help him along, but he says its up to him to do what is necessary to get better.

for Jordan. There was the lingering issue of a shoulder still recovering from surgery months ago. That shelved him for much of the preseason. So Jordan has been playing catch-up ever since and only against Atlanta did he first see significant action. Jordan played well: had a nice third down stop and put enough heat on Matt Ryan to force a gameending interception. Now, another step awaits. Wake is nursing an injured knee. Jordan will be on the field more. It is time to produce, time to take all the knowledge that Wake has imparted on Jordan and apply it to game day. I dont feel pressure, Jordan said. I knew coming into this league that it would take a lot of work on my part. But I know I can play in this league. I watch our opponents. I watch my teammates. I just have to continue to work on all the minor details of my job because all of those things add up. Jordans presence already has been felt on special teams. Hes on kickoff coverage, on kickoff returns, on field goal block and on punt returns. Really enjoy it, he says. I want to help this team any way I can.

So after four games, the advancement of Dion Jordan remains a day-to-day mission. He is healthy now. He knows the defense. He is seeing a dramatic increase in his playing time. There is no doubt within the inner sanctum of the Dolphins organization that this was the right player for the right reasons. But it is rare to find a rookie who doesnt need seasoning. Its up to me to do the things I need to do to get better, Jordan said. Its up to me to be a relentless player. And its up to Cameron Wake to help lead the way, to show Jordan every day the price that must be paid to reach the highest of levels. Jordan feeds off this relationship every chance he gets. He understands how fortunate he is to reside right next to Wakes locker just as Wake was once fortunate to reside next to Jason Taylor. Nothing has been given to Wake, Jordan said. He has earned everything he has gotten. I want to be the same way, the same type of player. The Dolphins would gladly settle for exactly that.
