Insomnia

This is a disease of disturbed sleep. In mild insomnia, the patient may have difficulty
falling asleep, is easily awakened, and finds it difficult to go back to sleep once
awakened. In cases of severe insomnia, the patient cannot fall asleep all night.

Insomnia in patients with neurasthenia, hypertension, cerebral arteriosclerosis, anemia,
hepatitis, menopausal syndrome, and psychoneurosis in modern medicine can be
treated by the following methods.

Applications of hand therapy:

Massage therapy:

Location: Head area, insomnia area, Shenmen (HT 7) and Zhongchong (PC 9).

Method of manipulation: Both hands are rubbed to produce a hot sensation. Heavy
pushing and rubbing maneuvers are applied to palm, and a pushing maneuver along
radial and ulnar borders of fingers and continuous pinching, digit-pressing and
kneading maneuvers at Shenmen and palmar surface of fingers; digit-pressing and
kneading maneuvers at head area and insomnia area; digit-pressing maneuver with
nail at Zhongchong; and rotating and pulling fingers. Each manipulation is repeated
30-50 times.

Acupuncture therapy:

At regular and extra acupoints:

Location: Neiguan (PC 6) and Shenmen (HT 7) acupoints.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted and retained for 30 minutes.

At reflective point:

Location: Heart point.

Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 1.6 cm and retained for five
minutes.

At special acupoints beside the second metacarpal bone:

Location: Head acupoint, and lung and heart acupoint.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 1.6 cm and retained for 20
minutes.

Hand bath:

Recipe: Cishi (Magnetitum) 50 g, Suanzaoren (Semen Zizyphi Spinosae) 30 g,
Baiziren (Arbor Vitae) 30 g, Danggui (Chinese Angelica) 20 g, Zhimu (Rhizoma
Anemarrhenae) 10 g, and Yejiaoteng (Caulis Polygoni Multiflori) 30 g.

Function: To tranquilize the mind.

Method of manipulation: A hot decoction of these herbs is used to steam and then
wash both hands for 30 minutes, once every night before going to bed.

Hand qigong: Kongjin exercise.

The hand is prone with palm facing downward and the fingers relaxed. The thumb,
ring finger, and little finger are flexed 11 times, and after each repetition the hand
resumes a ladder pattern. The index finger is extended upward and then flexed
downward twice, then the hand again resumes the ladder pattern. The exercise is
ended after a pole-standing exercise in a riding posture for five minutes.
