I have come that all may have life and have it abundantly John 10: 10 Dear Parishioners, Each year the first Sunday of October is designated as "Respect Life Sunday." So, this Sunday Oct. 6th is set apart this year to reflect, to pray and to commit ourselves to deeds that support life in all its fullness. Every human life is a gift from God and hence sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. Today, the gift and dignity of life, however, face multiple threats. There are the ancient scourges, as John Paul II calls them: poverty, hunger, endemic diseases, violence, and war. The list of threats includes genocide, mutilation, torture, subhuman living conditions, arbitrary imprisonment, deportation, and disgraceful working conditions. The newer threats include widespread abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, human embryonic stem cell research, drugs, and tampering with the worlds ecological balance. By recognizing the wide spectrum of human rights that comprises respect for life, we cannot ignore the fact that the right to life is fundamental. Because the right to life is the foundation of all the other inalienable rights, to be pro-life is to contribute to and acknowledge the common good in its entirety. This means that whoever is committed to respecting human life and dignity must recognize two things: first, any single issue does not exhaust respect for life, second is that preeminent among the threats to human dignity are those that directly and intentionally take innocent human life. Prayer and witness are key to fashioning a renewed and strong culture of life. October is not only Respect Life Month, but also the month of the Holy Rosary. In that beautiful prayer, we find a most powerful weapon against the forces of evil, including the evil of disrespecting and attacking human life from its first moment at conception all the way through to its last moment at natural death. Let us all resolve to be partners in building a strong culture of life. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you.. Jeremiah 1: 5
