ARTS COUNCIL OF MONGOLIA

On October 4-9, the Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival will present 12 films of the USA, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, France, Turkey and Sweden. The films will be screened free of charge at Tenggis Cinema. Nine of the twelve films were nominated and selected at the 2012-2013 Cannes, Berlin and Venetian film festivals. According to the initiation and sponsorship of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Mongolia, the festival will be held in order to enhance international cooperation among Mongolian and foreign filmmakers, along with artists. The Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival (UBIFF) was organized by The Culture Department of Municipality of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolian French Cultural Centre and Arts Council of Mongolia and will be held from October 3 to 10. Films are the spirit of any film festival and organizers are focusing on establishing the UBIFF as a program in step with contemporary cinema and films with sophisticated content and art forms. Therefore, the festival organizers invited international programmer Mr.Thibaut Bracq, who coordinated the Paris Project, the development platform of the Paris Cinema IFF, and programmer at the Cannes IFF. Now, he is the first programmer of the Ulaanbaatar Film Festival and has brought great program for festival participants. Organizers hope that citizens will take the chance to explore the best independent and art films of the world. Organizers of the international program are bringing the latest award-winning international films that were awarded at the Directors Fortnight, the Semaine de la critique and the Camera dOr of the Cannes International Film Festival-2013, including Salvo, Blue Ruin, La Jaula De Oro, ILO ILO and as well as Eat, Sleep and Die which won the Audience Award (Critics Week) from the Venice International Film Festival-2012. These pieces are different from commercial films which are already familiar to Mongolian audiences. Aesthetics, meaning, and art form defines the value of art pieces. Likewise, some people say they are art-house type films. World acclaimed film festivals are dedicated to support these kinds of films and filmmakers and support coordinators among film artists, share their experiences. Festival organizers are delighted that Mongolian filmmakers are given the opportunity to meet about 10 artists as actors/actresses, producers and directors from France, Taiwan, Singapore, Mexico, Turkey, Italy, Germany & USA, and join the international network of filmmakers. Twelve authorities of the National Center of Cinematography and the moving image, organizers of the Cannes International Film Festivals and world-renowned film distributors such as Memento Films, Match Factory and Film Boutique from Germany and France are here to promote greater partnerships and collaboration. Festival organizers are proud to open the festival with Yellow Colt, a debut feature film by Khoroldorj Choijoovanchig. That film will premiere at the 18th Busan International Film Festival as part of the A Window on Asian Cinema section. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected France as the festivals key country; therefore, another highlight of the festival will be the French Focus French Film Day that will kick off on October 5. French Film Day starts with Certified copy by Abbas Kiarostami which was nominated to Palme dOr and Juliette Binoche won Best Actress at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Afterwards, An Ordinary Execution by Marc Dugain will be screened. The opening ceremony of French Film Day on October 5, will start with Step Up to the Plate (Entre Les Bras) by Paul Lacoste at 7:00 pm.

This September, the State Academic Theatre of drama has successfully opened a new play Move over Mrs. Markham by

Ray Cooney. Move over Mrs. Markham is a comedy in two acts and the play is set in very elegant top floor London Flat,

belonging to Phillip and Joanna Markham. Farce is probably the most exacting form of drama for any cast and director. Pace, energy and timing of lines and action are everything. The plot starts simply enough with Joanna Markham anticipating attendance at a dinner with her publisher husband, Philip. In their absence, Joannas friend, Linda, wants to use the flat for a liaison with an admirer while Lindas philandering husband, HenryPhilips business partnerhas similar designs in terms of his latest conquest. In the midst of this marital infidelity is Alastair Spenlow, an outwardly gay interior designer who harbors a strong heterosexual urge to be in bed with the maid, Sylvie. As Lindas would-be lover, Walter and Henrys date, Miss Wilkinson, converge

on the scene all hell is let loose with lies and subterfuge galore. Into this mayhem walks Olive Harriet Smythe a dotty Norfolk dog owner and author of the bestselling Bow Wow books which Philip and Henry would dearly love to publish. Artistic Director: Naranbaatar.
