Make a connection from the story to you!

Teacher Directions For Cupcake Freebie!!!

Make sure you have a copy of the story, Camilla the Cupcake Fairy, by Tim Bugbird Make A Prediction Present Read the rst page of the story to students. Make sure students DO NOT know what is inside the present Camilla receives. Students color in the present and carefully cut on the dotted lines to make a ap. Students glue around the sides and top of this paper being careful not to put glue anywhere on the middle ap. Place this glued piece on top of the second page where students write the prediction. Students draw and write about what they think will be inside the gift Camilla receives from the Pink Fairy Post. This activity reinforces the reading strategies, prediction and inference. Completed pages may be turned in to a class book.

With Sight Word Sprinkles Display sight words, which students have learned somewhere in the room. The teacher decides whether students pick their favorite sight words, pick the sight words they are struggling with, or the sight words they are specically learning that month. Students copy the sight words on the cupcake. They must show their cupcake to a partner and read each sight word they wrote to a partner. Next, they choose a color to trace each sight word and color in the rest of the cupcake. When nished, students raise their hand and read the sight words to the teacher. Extensions could include students partnering and sharing sight word sentences, or writing down sentences about cupcakes using the sight words.

Decorate The Cupcake

Making Connections Papers Read the rest of the story to students. Story Retelling and Making Connections Papers are also included. On the Making Connections paper, students draw their face on the big circle cherry on top of the cupcake. In the thought bubble, students draw the connection they made to the story. Examples: I bake cupcakes with my mom. I had cupcakes for my birthday. I have a magic wand at home that I pretend..... I had a problem like Camilla and I had my friends help me solve it. These are all connections students may think of which relate their life to the story. On the Story Retelling paper students write or draw symbols of the parts of the story. I also have students write a P next to the rectangle box that shows where the problem in the story occurred.

Dont be like me, afraid to introduce parts of speech to kinders!!! Now that I am G.L.A.D (check out G.L.A.D. online) trained I realize the importance and how quickly kinders pick up simple grammar concepts! I have tweaked this G.L.A.D strategy to work for me. I hope it helps. Make four strips of chart paper (I make additional strips for each noun we decide to use). Color Code each strip. Above, notice the color coding. I also draw images on my chart so students have a visual to go with the words. Brainstorm with students words that work well under each section of the chart. In this unit, I included cards with cupcake words, which will jump start your brainstorm for your chart. Once the chart is lled in, you start building sentences!!!! If you are using the noun I you would have your conguration of chart strips as follows: Noun, Verb, Adjectives, and then Prepositional Phrase. Use post its and call on students to pick the verb, adjective, and prepositional phrase. Place the post its next to the words they choose. Then read the sentence to see if it makes sense. If it does not make sense, ask the student why and adjust.

Example sentence: I bake yummy spongy cupcakes in the oven.

If you are using the noun cupcakes you would congure your chart Adjective, Noun, Prepositional Phrase. I pull out the verb for this one. Students sing this sentence to the tune of Farmer in the Dell. Adjective Adjective Noun Adjective Adjective Noun Adjective Adjective Noun Prepositional Phrase. Example: Students would sing Yummy Spongy Cupcakes Yummy Spongy Cupcakes Yummy Spongy Cupcakes In The Kitchen Yummy spongy cupcakes in the kitchen.

I have provided color coded parts of speech cards within this cupcake unit. I have left blank cards for you to ll in words you choose as a class. After working with the sentence charts, students use the cards provided and build their own sentences. Finally, write their original sentences on lined paper.
