My decision to pursue post graduate studies in Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is underscored by my desire to achieve my long term career

goals include the pursuit of research in the field of digital signal processing, VLSI designing and teaching in an academic environment. I have found that a career in research is both intellectually stimulating and satisfying. The electronic chip has always fascinated me. As of early 2008, billion-transistor processors are commercially available. This is expected to become more commonplace as semiconductor fabrication moves from the current generation of 65 nm processes to the next 45 nm generations. Current designs, unlike the earliest devices, use extensive design automation and automated logic synthesis to lay out the transistors, enabling higher levels of complexity in the resulting logic functionality. This advancement in the technology of the chip industry has inspired me to work and to research in that industry. Signal processing is one of the brightest spots in the semiconductor business today. Digital signal processing also includes subfields like: audio and speech signal processing, sonar, digital image processing, signal processing for communications, biomedical signal processing, etc. In an astonishingly short period it has changed the way we have looked at things since centuries. This advancement is to make life easy and to increase human comfort at home and at work and I would like to be a part of such betterment. For this, research would be of prime importance with hands on experience in real time applications accompanied by in-depth knowledge of the subject. Hence, having done an inspiring four-year bachelor course in Electronic Engineering and two years masters study in microelectronics and VLSI design, I would like to put to use this knowledge to do my Doctor of Philosophy in VLSI Design and Digital Signal Processing. This would give me the leading edge in technology and the practical low-down and information I require. Consistent excellent performance during my elementary and high school years, especially in mathematics and science, was a reflection of the interest and flair that I possessed. Later on, my analytical skills and inquisitive nature yielded good results when I was adjudged to be within the top 10% of 60,000 students who had taken the National Level Science Talent Search Examination 19992000. Mathematics and physics are the fundamental of Electronics science. Hence, my interest in electronics blossomed during that time of study and I took Electronics as my major in undergraduate studies of Engineering. A strong foundation & consistent good academic record of 78% in undergraduate courses like Digital Electronics, Integrated Electronics, Microprocessors, Microwave Engineering, etc and Communication Engineering topics like Signals and systems, Analog Communication, Digital Communication, software languages MATLAB, C, Datastructure, VHDL helped me to get my first brush with serious group research in final year project named Design & Simulation of Cyclic Code encoder & Decoder. In post graduate study I have taken courses like advance Analog and Digital IC design, Microelectronic Technology & IC Fabrication, Digital Signal Processing & Applications, etc .I equipped myself with advance programming ,scripting and assertion based verification languages by which I efficaciously solved & programmed large architecture block in Embedded system and VLSI Design Lab in my post graduate study. Patience, diligence and keen interest are my main strengths. It was the great pride for me when I became topper of department having 97% marks, as very few students have achieved this feat. In lieu of a formal introduction of my research interests and aspirations I offer a summary of my postgraduate thesis Real Time Verification of VLSI Architecture for Recognition of Speaker Based on Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients, which is published as book by reputed German publication house. Under guidance of professor Depanwita Debnath , in this project I have designed individual blocks of MFCC (Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient ) in HDLs and observed real time simulation of these blocks .I have also done comparative studies among different processor blocks taking in concern less device utilization and high speed which led to publish research papers in two International journals & in CORNELL university library .As a whole , I have developed a real time embedded system built upon reconfigurable FPGA devices having DSP processing cores, which can generate and store the distinct spectral component of an individual for a finite length of speech which acts as an authentication signature of the individual. I have also tested the system in the run time and Debalina Ghosh /Statement of Purpose Page 1

also in FPGA, by the speech of various distinct individuals and different signal spectrums to verify whether the system validates the specific individual for which it has been programmed. I believe that experience plays a key role in ones career. In one year hiatus of academic study presently I am working as a project trainee in a semiconductor Company. I am engaged with several projects, where I have been shouldering responsibility of Project specification analysis, building the top level module and implementing the design into FPGA board, defining verification Plan, generating the functional and code coverage reports. This practical experience has given me the confidence to pursue doctorate and kindled a desire to continue research. I also has some teaching experience in Electronics department in my college .The good response to my efforts, coupled with my prowess in dramatics, elocution & debating gives me the confidence to handle any teaching assignment . I think these experiences help me to get a research assistantship or teaching assistantship job as I would be fully dependent on aid to finance my graduate studies. After going through the Electrical Engineering department website I found the research areas as Microelectronics and VLSI having research thrust in technology, characterization, modelling, simulation, design, and CAD tools fulfils all my needs and requirements. Not only does the department specialize in my areas of interest but the application driven innovative research and development carried out in VLSI design lab also cohere to my liking. The faculties of the department have a strong educational background and have acclaimed critical accolades. I am aware of the high standards of academic excellence and path-breaking research that Indian institute of Technology, Bombay has set. Further the strong networking of the Electrical Engineering department at this university with the industry would give me ample opportunities to interact with renowned professionals during my course work. It will be a privilege and a milestone in my academic career to be part of such a prestigious institution. I am confident that in return for this I can make a perennial contribution to your institution and return with the skill and competence to find my mark and be a vital part of the booming, futuristic semiconductor industry in mother India.
