Induction set ( 3 minutes)

Power point slide

Teacher shows the power point slides that include many types of shapes. Teacher asks the student about the different between shapes which have areas and shapes without area.

Step 1 ( 5 minutes )

Introducing the concept of addition of area.

1. Teacher provides pupils with a square card (A). 2. Teacher provides 16 units small square cards to the pupils. 3. Teacher asks the pupils to fill up all the small units of square cards into the big square card . Pupils count the number of small square cards that fill in the big square card. 4. Then, teacher asks the pupils to count the quantity of unit square in length and breadth. 5. Area of the square = Length x breadth 6. Teacher gives another square card (B) which is the same size with square card (A). 7. Ask the pupils to fold the square into 2 parts. Half of the square is a triangle. So the area of a triangle is a half of the a area of a square. 8. Area of triangle =
1 X base X height 2

9. Teacher combines the triangle shape and the rectangle shape. The pupils give the total answer for that combined shapes. Step 2 ( 5 minutes) Introducing the procedural to find the area of dimensional composite shape of two quadrilateral and triangles. 1. Teacher uses the power point slide to teach pupils how to find the area of composite shapes. Teacher asks the pupils to name the shapes. E.g. A , B. Find the missing length or breadth. Recognize the shapes and use the right formula for each shape. Pupils must count the area of each shape and then total up all area of the shape. This is the answer.

Step 3 ( 10 minutes )

Measure the length , breadth ( rectangle ) and the base , height ( triangle ) and then find the area of two composite shape . Assessment

1. Pupils work in group 3 or 4 . 2. Each group will be given 2 questions to solve. 3. Teacher guides the pupils during this activity. 4. Every group tells their answer to the class. 1. Teacher gives the worksheet consist of 4 questions. 2. Pupils do the exercise in the worksheet. 1. Teacher asks the pupils what are the steps to find the 2D composite area. 2. The step are Name the shapes. E.g. A , B , C Find the missing length or breadth. Recognize the shapes and use the right formula for each shape. Total up the area for composite shapes. This is the answer.
