Distributed Busbar/Circuit Breaker Failure Protection

7SS52
Functional improvements from V1.60 to V1.70 (central unit)

For the firmware version V1.70 (English) / V1.20 (German) bay unit firmware V1.30 the following changes have been implemented:

1. Real time clock

The central unit and bay units provides a battery buffered real time clock with a 10ms/1ms resolution. The setting is done via the central unit with actual time (date, hours, min). The clocks in the bay units are synchronised from the central unit automatically. A local setting of the time in each bay unit is possible as well. The clock(s) can be synchronised via binary input (minute impulse).

2. End fault protection

The end fault protection has to detect faults between the current transformer and the circuit breaker (grey or dead zone) and to initiate the necessary tripping or intertripping. The CT location is required as a parameter. The function end-fault-protection is activated with the secure detection of the open status of the CB. This requires the marshalling of the CB auxiliary contacts (open and close) to the bay unit. Depending on the CT location a tripping of the bus section or an intertripping signal is initiated (if a fault is detected).

3. Circuit breaker failure protection

3.1 Start from two feeder protection devices Both main 1 and main 2 feeder protection devices can initiate either a phase segregated or a three phase CBF protection. The first detected signal starts the CBF protection. Different delay times are available for single and three phase initiation (TCBF1pol and TCBF3pol). This can be used for adaptation to different dead times for single and three pole AR. 3.2 Low current mode Having small fault currents (i.e. tripping due to a Buchholz trip) the current controlled CBF mode would not operate, the CBF protection would not start. For these applications a new CBF operating mode 'low current I<' is available. This mode allows the start of the CBF protection even without current. This mode requires the status of the CB. 3.3 Blocking of the CBF protection When testing the feeder protection a start of the CBF protection is not desired. Via keypad or binary input the CBF protection can be blocked on a bay by bay basis. In order to check the performance the initiation however is indicated.

4. Bay specific parameters

All of the settings (CBF mode, thresholds, delay times) are independently available for each bay unit thus achieving an adaptation to different feeder types and operating conditions.

5. Detection of the CB position

The new functions end-fault-protection and low current mode of CBF require the detection of the CB position. Using the OPEN and CLOSE position the monitoring operates in the same manner as for the isolators.

6. Battery
The memory for the event list, fault records and fault reports is buffered by batteries in the central unit and the bay units against loss in case of auxiliary voltage failure. The clock time is buffered as well. The capacity of the battery is monitored.

7. Delayed isolator monitoring indications

The indications from the isolator replica monitoring (runtime, plausibility check, loss of auxiliary voltage) are delayed with the set isolator supervision time.

8. Marshalling of binary inputs of the central unit

A marshalling of binary inputs in the central unit is now possible. This was required due to the extended scope of functions.

9. Marshalling of alarm outputs of the central unit

Multiple marshalling of indications up to 5 alarm outputs in the central unit is now possible.

10. Extended fault recording

The fault recording of the central unit is extended. Two fault records up to 400 ms (100 ms pre fault, 300 ms after trip command) or one fault record with 800 ms (-100 ms/+700 ms) are possible. Thereby a breaker fail condition can be recorded as well.

11. Bus coupler without CB

For bus couplers without a circuit breaker but with one or two CTs a section specific measurement is possible thus allowing a correct fault location. The complete busbar will be tripped.

12. Blocking of the trip command

In order to allow testing the initiation of the trip command can be blocked. All protection functions continue to run.

13. Isolator maintenance

For the maintenance of the isolators the auxiliary voltage for the isolator replica has to be switched off. In order to avoid wrong alarm due to the monitoring the respective alarms can be suppressed by initiating the isolator maintenance mode via key pad or binary input. Meanwhile the busbar protection is working with the old isolator position.

14. Reset of the isolator alarm

If the isolator supervision detects an isolator fault, the alarm and the blocking if parametrised- can be reset even if the cause for the alarm is still present. An additional indication 'no isolator operation !' is generated. A renewing of this alarm initiates the blocking again.

15. Increasing the availability by selective blocking

It can be selected whether a detection of an external or internal faults (isolator monitoring, bay unit faults) lead to a blocking of the protection system or only to a blocking of the 'faulty' section or faulty phase. If a bay unit fails only the affected section is blocked.

16. Commissioning help

If an original start is made in the central unit the number of connected bay units is set to zero. This allows the operation of the central unit without connected bay units and simplifies the commissioning.

17. Detection of faulty CB

The detection of a faulty CB via binary input leads in case of a tripping to a non delayed intertrip command to the remote end.

18. Increasing of the sensitivity for resistive earthed networks

In resistance earthed networks the single pole earth current is limited. The short circuit current might be of similar value as the load current. For single phase fault a separate (more sensitive) characteristic is available which can be released via an external criteria e.g. displacement voltage.
