Mind Mapping Definition

Graphical technique for visualizing connections between several ideas or pieces of information. Each idea or fact is written down and then linked by lines or curves to its major or minor (or following or previous) idea or fact, thus creating a web of relationships. Developed by the UK researcher Tony Buzan in his 1972 book 'Use Your Head,'

mind mapping is used in note taking, brainstorming, problem solving, and project planning. Like other mapping techniques its purpose is to focus attention, and to capture and frame knowledge to facilitate sharing of ideas and concepts.

A Mind Map is a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of the brain. It harnesses the full range of cortical skills word, image, number, logic, rhythm, colour and spatial awareness in a single, uniquely powerful manner. In so doing, it gives you the freedom to roam the infinite expanses of your brain. Mind Maps can be applied to every aspect of life where improved learning and clearer thinking will enhance human performance. Developed by English psychologist Tony Buzan in 1960, Mind Maps were first presented as a new method for note-taking and brainstorming. By using Mind Maps you show the structure of the subject and linkages between points, as well as the raw facts contained in normal notes. Mind Maps hold information in a format that your mind will find easy to remember and quick to review. In fact, they abandon the list format of conventional note taking.,

doing this in favor of a two-dimensional structure.

What is Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is a simple technique for drawing information in diagrams, instead of writing it in sentences. The diagrams always take the same basic format of a tree, with a single starting point in the middle that branches out, and divides again and again. The tree is made up of words or short sentences connected by lines. The lines that connect the words are part of the meaning.

Benefits and Uses

I think I already gave away the benefits of mind mapping and why mind maps work. Basically, mind mapping avoids dull, linear thinking, jogging your creativity and making note taking fun again. But what can we use mind maps for?

Note taking Brainstorming (individually or in groups) Problem solving Studying and memorization Planning Researching and consolidating information from multiple sources Presenting information Gaining insight on complex subjects Jogging your creativity

What are the Advantages of Mind Mapping? In short, youll understand information more easily and come up with much better ideas. Mind mapping is a unique concept used to help increase productivity, convey information more effectively, increase creativity, share information in an organised and efficient way and overall enhance communications within your office. With mind mapping your thoughts, ideas, concepts, and even notes are organised into visual patterns. When things are presented visually most people recall them much easier, and they tend to be more creative in generating adjacent ideas.

Strategies For Teaching Comprehension

Take a look at the figure attached to this post. This figure is a Mind Map. A Mind Map is a visual way to express information, ideas and concepts. This display of information is a mirror reflection of how our brains sort out information. Looking at the figure, you will notice that right in the dead centre, there is a phrase What About The Government. Breaking out from this phrase are branches that contain other keywords which then contain sub-keywords and images. This is what I like to call neuro-association. Its the association that the brain makes with each of these keywords, starting from the main one in the middle. Also, visual image representations depict even more associations with the keyword. There is no limit to how big a Mind Map can grow because every keyword or image we hold in our brain is connected to another one in a tree like fashion. If you take the time to draw it all out using keywords and images, you will have created a Mind Map. So how does this information help us with teaching comprehension? It helps because when you teach your students how the brain sorts our information, they will then start to zone in and make associations come to the surface every time they read something new. In my class, I do a group Mind Map and encourage my students to use Mind Mapping when they want to be able to comprehend better. Sometimes I ask a select student to Mind Map what they have read so I can see how they comprehend the information

being presented. I can then see visually where the associations are different then the message being delivered in the content they are reading. I then start to elaborate on the information at the false association point and then ask them to redo the Mind Map. The next Mind Map they create looks more accurately like the information in the content that they are reading. This is how you know for sure that they are comprehending this information. Of course they become very excited when they learn how they comprehend information and they then start using Mind Mapping as a great tool to improve their comprehension
