3.4 # 5, 10 (p. 221)

3. (Curl of vector eld) Find the curl of the vector eld
F = (cos yz x)i + (cos xz y)j + (cos xy z)k.
4. (Tangency) Show that the curve traced parametrically by

(A curve C and a surface S are said to be tangent at the point P if the tangent line of C
is contained in the tangent plane of S at P.)

5. (Helix) A large piece of cylindrical metal pipe is to be manufactured to include a
strake, which is a spiraling strip of metal that oers structural support for the pipe. (See
Figure 1.) The pieces of the strake are to be made from at pieces of exible metal whose
curved sides are arcs of circles as shown in Figure 2. Assume that the pipe has a radius
of a ft and that the strake makes one complete revolution around the pipe every h ft.
(a) In terms of a and h, what should the inner radius r be so that the strake will t
snugly against the pipe?
(b) Suppose a = 3 ft and h = 25 ft. What is r?
(Hint: You may compare the curvatures of the helical path in Figure 2 and the circle with
radius r.)

Figure 2.4. The smokestack had radius a
3.75 feet. Each revolution of the strake had a height
of 31 5 feet
The curve along which the strake attaches to the smokestack is
a heliX'
x = (x, y, z) = (a cos t, a sin t, htl27T'),
with the x and y coordinates following a circle of radius a = 3.75 feet
while the z coordinate increases at a constant rate. In each revolu-
tion, 8 increases by 27T' and z increases by h = 31.5 feet. Hence the
velocity is
