A robotics company has a project to design a robot that can pick up and analyze meteors. One of the critical design criteria is to minimize the weight of the robot. Your job is to redesign the robots gripper arm to reduce its weight while maintaining design requirements listed below. Autodesk Robot Gripper Arm Design Challenge - GrabCAD

GrabCAD Arm.stp file keeping the location and size of the critical faces shown in red in the following image. This arm needs to be optimized to reduce its mass while being able to withstand 20,000 Newtons of resistance applied to the gripping surface with a deformation no greater than 8mm and a safety factor of 3 or greater. View the example video GrabCAD Tutorial.mp4 to see a simulation and edit of the model in SIM 360. You can download video and additional files under 'Download specification' button below. Finally post the design back to GrabCAD for comments and review. NOTE: Use your favorite CAD tool to design the arm as many different CAD file types can be imported into SIM 360. Use Autodesk SIM 360 to optimize a retrieval gripper arm. You must acquire a license of Autodesk SIM 360. Students can access the software through the Autodesk Education Community and non-students can access a 90 day trial HERE

Requirements
Design a new arm or modify the provided step file. Use of Autodesk SIM 360 to optimize the design. Must submit a report from Autodesk SIM 360 HTML format and CAD file of the design. Download specification

Rules
The competition is open to everyone. Multiple entries are acceptable. Team entries are welcome - prize will be transferred to team leader. Tag your entry with designslam when uploading to GrabCAD. If you submit through the "Submit entry" button, this should be added automatically. Only entries with valid tag will participate. Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD through the "Submit entry" button on this Challenge page will be considered an entry.

By entering this competition, you 1. Warrant that the work is your original work. 2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited. 3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person. ----------------------------------------------If you think an entry may infringe on existing copyrighted materials, please email challenges@grabcad.com. Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicants participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment. The sum of the Awards is the total gross amount of the reward. The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature. We will release the finalists before the final announcement to give the Community an opportunity to "vote" for their favorites in the comments. The jury will take these into consideration when picking the final winner. This new addition is based on feedback from you! Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements. This Challenge starts on September 6, 2013 and ends on October 6, 2013 (11:59pm UTC). Winners will be announced by November 6, 2013. Void where prohibited.
