Bring the children to the main table Ask the challenge question- Are all seeds the same? T: Look at whats on the table. What are these? S: Seeds! or I dont know! T: Do you think all seeds are the same? What do you notice about these seeds? Are they the same colors? Do they feel the same? Did you know corn kernels are seeds? S: Some are big and smooth. or Some of them are small and round. These are like balls! The pumpkin seeds are white. Bin (for:) Pumpkin seeds Gourd seeds Apple seeds Corn kernels Large Table I had to use a lot of guiding questions to encourage more descriptive responses

Begin investigative questions

10:0010:05

Categorize seeds by characteristics

T: Can we find all the seeds that are_(characteristic)_? (i.e. flat, smooth, round, from pumpkins, gourds, apples, etc.)

6. Evaluation:
(How will you know whether or not you have achieved your short-term specific goals?) Children are able to describe the seed characteristics. Children are able to categorize seeds.

7. Post Lesson Reflection:

Talk about the goals of your lesson, how did your lesson meet those goals? What did the childrens responses to this lesson tell you about whether your goals were met? The children were able to see and describe the size, color, and shape differences in the seeds. They were able to group the seeds by fruit as well. I think the goals were met.

What would you change about this lesson and why would those changes improve it?

I would start the lesson by bringing up past experiences with these particular fruits such as our field trip to Curtis Orchard last week to build background knowledge beforehand. I would also have more of each seed type and larger surface for exploration.

How did your organization and materials affect the success of the lesson?

There were not many materials to organize, so I think that organization did not really affect my lesson.

What were some challenges with this lesson? What surprised you?

I was surprised at how well the children could differentiate seeds that look VERY similar. One challenge was that it was during free activity time so some students changed throughout the lesson.
