Wood

No other material is as deeply embedded in the history, culture and life of humans worldwide as wood. Wood is probably the oldest building material in use and its charm has besieged designers, architects and home makers since ages. Wood is universal yet unique, wood is simple yet royal, wood is soft yet strong, minimal yet extravagant. It is cool yet warm. These paradoxes make wood an enigmatic material that is loved by all. Usage of wood in windows started somewhere around 14th century when solid wood was used to cover the openings in the walls. Since then windows have come a long way and despite the advent of new man made materials, wood strongly holds its ground.

Traditional Windows
Wood windows in India are done in a very traditional way. These are fabricated on site by the local woodworking craftsmen using conventional tools. The wood is procured from local wood suppliers and then left in open to season naturally. Then a very basic frame and sash design is made using hand tools and some basic woodworking machinery. The frames and sashes are then put together using the most common type of glue and nails. The frames are then fitted into the structure while it is being constructed. The sashes with glasses are fitted towards the end. The whole window is then finished using conventional finishing methods of polishing or painting by local painters. The panes are usually with a thin single glass and additional items like safety iron grills and ironmongery etc. are also fixed on the frame and sash.

There are however few major issues with this kind of windows:
? Since the wood is not properly seasoned, there is a considerable movement in

the wood because of the moisture and usually these types of windows warp and jam during rainy season.
? Since the wood is not treated and usually also contains the sap wood, it is

susceptible to insect attacks.

? Since the joinery is not done very accurately, over a period of time because of

the natural movement of the wood, the joints open up and are subjected to rot.
? Since the finishing method is ordinary and very basic , the coatings weather

away very quickly and the wood is left unprotected making it susceptible to rot and more absorption of moisture.
? Since the design of the sash and the frame is very basic, it offers no protection

from water seeping in during heavy rains thru the gaps between sash and frame. Same is the case with dust getting in thru the gaps.
? Similarly due to these gaps, these types of windows offer a very little thermal

insulation. In case of air-conditioned rooms, the cool air escapes thru these gaps resulting in loss in efficiency.
? Usually the glass used in these kinds of windows is a single glass which is totally

inefficient in thermal insulation. In winters, the warmth of the room is lost and in summers the cool of the room is lost. Due to the above mentioned factors, these windows lose their beauty in 2-3 years. To maintain them either one has to do regular expensive maintenance or change them in few years.

This window has been the mainstay window design in India from the beginning. At Artius we are very sensitive towards the environment. We take every care to ensure that our carbon footprint is minimal. Our wood is procured from suppliers dealing in wood from sustainable sources. The scrap generated from machining the wood is collected using high powered dust extraction system and is made into fuel briquettes. The seasoning plant is based on de-humidification technology and does not have any boiler or furnace. The paint shop also uses dry type paint booth with high quality filters that ensure no paint residue is let out into air or mixed with water. The paints used are water based systems and use no harmful chemicals (voc) during the application. It is a general perception that products made of wood are harmful to the environment. This is true only if the timber is not harvested sustainably and leads to deforestation. However if the timber is sourced correctly, wood is the most environment friendly material in terms of its production, transportation and disposal. The amount of energy required to manufacture man made materials far outweigh the recyclability advantage of these materials. Wood on the other hand is a natural bio-degradable product and if used right remains for a very long period. As compared to the other materials used for manufacturing windows (uPVC, Alluminum), wood is the most eco friendly and green material. Installation
As the window/door system is factory finished, the installation is done at the final stage of the house construction. All you need is to prepare the opening where the windows/doors are to be installed. Our services do not end at providing you with the product recommendation and technical advice but our professional installation team ensures that your windows & doors are fitted to your home to the highest standards. Following measures are taken to ensure that Artius window & door system are installed with precision:
? The window/door frame is made 10mm smaller than the

opening.
? The sashes fitted with the frame are jammed in the

opening with high quality compressed PU foam and then fastened for additional support.
? The fasteners are concealed with similar size and colour

CNC machined wood dowels.

? The PU foam is concealed with either silicon or wood

architraves depending upon the design theme.

? High compressive strength, dual side adhesive tape is

used to fix the glass (DGU/Security/Toughened) with the sash to offer stability in case of expansion and contraction of wood.
? The glass is further silicon sealed to ensure absolute
