2. DEFINITION OF TERMS 2.1 Immunocompromised Patient a patient who has severely impaired resistance secondary to underlying conditions or immunosuppressive drugs used as treatment of an underlying condition. 2.2 Reverse Isolation- an isolation precaution designed to protect persons who have severely impaired immunity from contact with potentially pathogenic organisms. 3. POLICY 3.1 Immunocompromised patients who are considered at high risk for acquiring potential pathogens during temporary state of impaired immunity are placed in Reverse Isolation when deemed necessary by the attending physician. 4. SCOPE 4.1 This policy applies to all patients, relatives and employees involved in patient/family interaction in Gulf Diagnostic Center Hospital. 5. RESPONSIBILITY 5.1 Physician 5.2 Registered/Practical Nurses 6. GUIDELINES: 6.1 Patients are placed in a single private room with door closed at all times. 6.2 Only persons who are free of communicable diseases may enter the unit. 6.3 Standard precautions are observed. 6.3.1 Strict hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol based hand rub is observed before and after each patient contact. 6.3.2 Gloves are worn by all personnel who have direct contact with the patient. 6.3.3 Masks are worn by all persons entering the room and discarded after each use. 6.3.4 The nurse and/or the attending physician inform the patient and/or family members regarding the reason for placement of patient in reverse isolation. 6.3.5 All reusable items remain inside the room until there is no use for it. 6.3.6 Items for which disinfection is not necessary or not disposable are placed outside the room if possible.

6.3.7 Linen is cleaned and disinfected prior to contact with patient. 6.3.8 Carts for supplies are cleaned daily and replenished every shift or as needed. 6.3.9 No plant, flowers or fruit baskets are brought inside the patients room. 6.3.10 All environmental surfaces in the patients room are wiped daily with a disinfectant. 6.3.11 Walls are spot cleaned when soiled. 6.3.12 Floors are mopped daily with a disinfectant. 6.
