Section C 11 (a) (b) The presence of salt increase the boiling point of a pure liquid. i. ii. To study the effect of impurities on the boiling point of a pure liquid. constant variable : volume of distilled water. the presence of salt. boiling point of the liquid.

manipulated variable : responding variable i. :

Distilled water, salt, beaker, wire gauze, tripod stand, Bunsen burner and thermometer. iv. Procedure:

Distilled water is poured into a beaker until it is half full. The water is heated until it boils. The temperature while the water boils is recorded. Two spatula of salt are added into the distilled water and the mixture is boiled. The temperature of the boiling mixture of water and salt is recorded. v. Material Distilled water Mixture of distilled water and salt Boiling point (oC)

(a) Physical changes Less energy is needed No formation of new products Easily reversible Changes in physical properties only (b)

Chemical changes More energy is needed Formation of new products Difficult to reverse Involve changes in chemical properties [ 4 marks] [1] [1]

All the four reaction have some common characteristics (i) Easily reversible (ii) Involve changes in physical properties only

Therefore, it can be conceptualised that all four reactions in the given examples are physical changes. Physical changes are changes which invove physical properties only. [1]

For example, when ice melts, it changes to water, both ice and water are made of H2O molecules. They are the same compound, but only change in terms of physical state. [1] However when candle burs, the wax burns in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. New products are formed. Hence, the burning of candle cannot be classified as a physical change. [1] The actual concept for physical changes Can be defined as: Physical changes are changes that involve physical properties. No new products of different chemical properties are produced. Physical changes are easily reversible. [1] _______ 10

13(a) Process : Neutralisation [1 mark] Ammonium salt fertilizers are produced from the reaction between ammonium hydroxide and an acid. [ 1 mark ] Salt and water are form from neutralization process. Salt and water was evaporated to form salt solution. [ 1 mark ] [ 1 mark ]

Then the salt solution was cooled and crystallized to form Ammonium salt fertilizers [ 1 mark ]

(b) Identify Problem Clarification the Problem Solving Methods The best method. Explain Water pollution The river is polluted by the ammonium salt fetilizer 1. Enforcement of laws. 2. Application of technology 3. Education Application of technology. -Biological control and natural fertilizers used in organic farming help reduce pollution caused by agricultural waste. [ 5 marks]
