Biggest Game Is Your Next One

Make no mistake about it, this week is an important week for both North Cedar and Tipton on the football field. Both hold playoff aspirations and both could take a big step in realizing that goal with a victory this week in Stanwood. Tipton needs this win in my opinion since they have games at Maquoketa Valley and at home against Clayton Ridge coming up. North Cedar also with their fast start with a win, could start to make postseason plans and turn their attention on possibly contending for the district title with games with Maquoketa Valley and Clayton Ridge coming up. Its homecoming for the Knights who enter the game 5-0 and one of the good stories in Eastern Iowa and in class 1A this season. This North Cedar team will look a lot different than in the most recent past for Tipton fans that attend Fridays game. Gone is the tight run-first game plan and in its place is a wide-open attack that will challenge even the most stout defenses this fall. The Knights have scored 200 points this season in five games. Though their schedules are different, North Cedars total would rank up there with the point production put up by state ranked 1A teams Iowa City Regina (214) and Wilton (210). The Knights have given up a measly 34 points or just over one touchdown per game in their five games as well. Quarterback Jayden Johnson is putting up numbers that are mind boggling - a class 1A leading 1,083 passing yards and 17 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. Jacob Hay is one of the top receivers in class 1A with 29 receptions for 412 yards and 6 touchdowns, but, he is not the only Knight weapon. Two others - Derrick Gray (14 rec. 199 yards 6 TDs) and Seth Hamilton (11 rec. 168 yards 2 TDs) also can make plays. If a defense is fortunate to slow down the passing game, the Knights can move the football on the ground too. Senior tailback Derrick Gray has 572 yards on 77 carries for a 7.4-yard average and 8 scores. Johnson, chips in 319 yards on 43 carries and also averages 7.4 yards a carry. The Tigers defensive backfield will no doubt be tested this week and that may be where the game is won or lost in my opinion. That will put more pressure on the Tigers front 7 to make plays and apply that much more pressure on Johnson. When Tipton has the ball, they have playmakers of their own. Last week showed that the Tigers can run the ball many consecutive times for many yards against a fast defense. They will need that effort again this week as they may have to play keep away to an extent from the Knights. Chandler Harden is the 4th leading rusher in class 1A and after last week, the Tigers have sophomore Jordan Challis capable of changing things up in the mix too. Challis ran for a career high 121 yards and a touchdown while Harden, who was facing a defense geared to stop him, nearly matched that total with 89 yards. At times, the Tigers have shown that they can move the football through the air as well with athletic receivers Taylor Axberg and Josh Smith among others. Each have had bright spots in the past few weeks. Im not going to make a prediction on who I think will win, but, I do know that with two rivals playing, a 77-18 win by Tipton last season, and two teams needing this win for their playoff pursuits, it cant Continued To Page 13.

Late M-P Touchdown Gives Golden Hawks Win

WELLMAN The Tipton Tiger football team traveled to Wellman for their last non-district football game of the season. There, the Tigers got out to a 14-point lead, but 21 straight unanswered points by Mid-Prairie, including the winning touchdown with 5:41 left in the football game sent the Golden Hawks to a 21-14 win. The loss did not matter in the Tigers district 5 standings as the Tigers are still one of three unbeaten district teams along with North Cedar (3-0) and Maquoketa Valley (2-0). The Tigers have four more football games left this season, all important. This week, Tipton travels to rival North Cedar to play the Knights. North Cedar is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in district play. Tipton is 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. The Knights have a district leading 200 points and have given up a district best 34 points. Tipton has scored 161 team points and has given up 87 team points. Tipton had 17 first downs in the game and 329 yards of total offense. The Tigers offensive output continued its run of games with at least 300 yards of total offense. Tipton rushed for 248 yards on 53 carries for a 4.7-yard average. Tipton passed for 81 yards. Individually, Tipton got a career night from sophomore Jordan Challis. Challis rushed for 121 yards on 12 carries for a 10.1-yard per carry average and 1 TD. Class 1A leading rusher, going into the game last Friday, rushed for 89 yards on 22 carries against a stout defense trying to shut him down all night. Alex Wiley passed for 81 yards on 10-of-18 pass attempts with 1 TD and no interceptions. Josh Smith continued to give the Tigers passing attack a spark, leading the Tigers with four receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Tipton was led by Austin Howe with 8 tackles and Chandler Harden with 7. Scott Stueland had 6. All three had sacks in the game. Mid-Prairie had 13 first downs in the football game and 366 yards of total offense with 208 yards rushing and 158 yards passing. Eesaa Baylor led Mid-Prairie in rushing with 116 yards on 19 carries. It was the first 100-yard game by a Golden Hawk running back this season. Austin Errthum rushed for 87 yards on two carries to nearly double his output through the first four games combined. Reid Miller passed for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He threw no interceptions. Zachary Schwartz had a team high five receptions for 33 yards and two touchdowns. Errthum also caught two passes for 77 yards. Defensively, Schwartz had a team high 13 tackles to lead Mid-Prairie. Devon Young had 9 while Reid Miller had 8. There were three missed field goals in the game, two by Mid-Prairie and one by Tipton. Game Summary: First Quarter: The first quarter saw Tipton have two drives, but no points to show for it. The longest drive with six plays, but a four-play drive after a missed 47-yard field goal by Austin Errthum stalled at the 29-yard line after the Tigers went for a 4th down Continued To Page 13.

Tigers Win Two Big RVC Matches

TIPTON The Tipton volleyball team won two exciting volleyball matches this past week against RVC South opponents Iowa City Regina and Mid-Prairie. The Tigers won game three, 25-22 while the Regals came from behind to win game four 27-25. Tipton then held on in game five to win 15-13 to claim the match over the Regals.
