CHAPTER 1 1.0 Introduction

he purpose of SIWES (Student Industrial Work experience Scheme) is to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge acquired from the classroom (Theoretical Education) and that gotten from the world out there in their various field of learning. This exposure is indispensable and a further compliments to academic work. It was discovered that not only theoretical experience gotten from the tertiary institution would suffice for a student wishing to be effective in the labour force but also practical experience, that which can be seen physically and related to that learnt in the classroom. Not only will it broaden ones perspective on what one is studying, it will also give the student a feel of what to expect in the industry and also get used to employment and work-life. Its an academic program designed for students undergoing degree courses targeted at exposing the students to real work of life and exposing them to obtaining a practical knowledge of various fields. It is aimed at minimizing the problem of inadequate practical skills in preparation for employment in the industry by graduates. The student aim to amass attributes like resourcefulness, tactfulness, time management and management in general, methodical working and leadership traits which will be an added advantage for anybody.

CHAPTER 2 CONTRIBUTION AND EXPERIENCED GAINED

Working in Nigeria Nigerian Breweries was a privilege, to accessing a world of a Multinational environment and learning the act of communication skills in general. My learning experience comprised of office work, analysis of records, printing of trainees kit, tracking and documenting of records as well as evaluating of training programs. I was given a variety of task to handle which ranges from preparing ITF form 4A; for approvals, preparing logistics arrangement for training facilitators, creation of purchase request and goods receipt to enable the various providers get their fund for service rendered. While implementing my task, I utilized tools from Microsoft office tools, the companies ERP (SAP) and the companies H.R portal Nigeria Breweries is a leading brewing company and has a way of motivating, developing and enriching their staffs through different training programs scheduled at different period which is aimed at improving the developmental-input, structural-organization and its management on the companys policies and operations centered around its various branches, This happens to be where my world revolved during my experience in Nigerian Breweries (Training department).

Training Department
One of the major principles needed by commerce and industries to succeed in the current situation is quality training that will equip the employees with new skills, competencies and techniques. If you hire and keep good employees, it is good policy to invest in the development of their skills, so as to increase their productivity. It has therefore become a necessity to evolve new areas of approach to enhance the relevance training and quality required for the company at large. New competencies are being developed in various areas including Vocational and Technical training, and regarding these reasons, the list of participants pertaining to each trainings are being prepared and usually sent to ITFs office for approvals in other to set and regulate the training standards and offer direct training intervention in the company and its development using a service of highly competent professional staff, modern techniques and technology. As part of its [INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND (ITF)] responsibilities, the ITF provides Direct Training, Vocational and Apprentice Training, Research and Consultancy Service with Reimbursement of up to 50% Levy paid by employers of labour registered with it; It also provides human resource development information and training technology service to the company so as to enhance its manpower capacity and in-house training delivery effort. The ITF Reimbursement Scheme was established to motivate and encourage contributing employers to train and re-train their employees. The Scheme provides that a maximum of 60% of levy be paid to up-to-date levy contributors who satisfy laid down conditions for claiming Reimbursement. The aims and objectives of the Reimbursement Scheme are to ensure that: Training activities are spread to all levels of workers in the company; ascertain the relevance of Employers training and effectiveness; certified that Training programmes are properly implemented and evaluated and enable Training activities, according to the needs of the employers and the economy as a whole, are being encouraged.

Preparation of training Materials: these training kits are usually prepared by us in-other to save some cost from the various providers whom would send us their softcopies which we would then print and distribute to the facilitators and trainees. Each of our material includes a variety of activities which utilize a wide range of simulations to challenge energize and re-focus individuals. The activities are tailored to the desired learning outcome of any training course. These materials are used as references and off-site activities, making it great for learning curriculum. Each material comes in high quality portfolio with all activities stored in each individual files, ensuring its easy to understand. Finally, each material is equipped with a field guide that has concise, easy-to-read instructions for all activities. Purchase Request (P.R): This purchase requisition is a request sent to the Logistics department to procure goods or services. It is originated and approved by the purchasing (training) department requiring the goods or services. Typically, it contains a description and quantity of the goods or services to be rendered or (purchased), preferred make (Contact Person), a required delivery date, account number and the amount of money that the purchasing department is authorized to spend for the goods or services. Often, the names of suggested supply sources (i.e. vendors name) are also included. A purchase requisition is owned by the originating department and should not be changed by the logistics department without obtaining approval from the originating department. It is after the whole processing having met the right requirement and approved signatories by the authorised officials, then a purchase Order is issued out. Purchase Order (P.O): A purchase order is a commercial document and first official offer issued by Nigerian Breweries to a vendor, indicating types (of services or goods rendered), quantities, and agreed prices for products or services the Vendor provided. Sending a purchase order to a Vendor constitutes a legal offer to procure products or services. Acceptance of a purchase order by a vendor usually forms a contract between the company and the vendor, so
10

no contract exists until the purchase order is accepted. It is used to control the purchasing of products and services from external suppliers Creating a purchase order is typically the first step of a Purchase, to pay process in an ERP (Enterprise resource planning) system. ERP (Enterprise resource planning) system is a cross-functional enterprise system driven by an integrated suite of software modules that supports the basic internal business processes of a company. ERP gives a company an integrated real-time view of its core business processes such as production, order processing, and inventory management, tied together by ERP applications software and a common database maintained by a database management system. The ERP systems track business resources (such as cash, raw materials, and production capacity) and the status of commitments made by the company (such as vendor orders, purchase orders, and employee payroll), no matter which department (manufacturing, purchasing, sales, finance, and so on) has entered the data into the system. The ERP facilitates information flow between the companies functions inside the organization, and manages connections to outside stakeholders. The Company use purchase orders for several reasons: Purchase orders allow the company to clearly and explicitly communicate their intentions to Vendors. Vendors are protected should the company refuses to pay for goods or services. Purchase orders help a purchasing agent to manage incoming orders and pending orders. Purchase orders provide economies in that they streamline the purchasing process to a standard procedure.

11

Goods Receipt (G.R): Goods receipt is a follow-on activity to a purchase order. It forms the basis for updating the Accounting General (AC) modules and inventory management, which can trigger Materials Management (WM) and Quality Management (QM) processes. With this business process, a control check is put in place on the goods receipt and goods issue processes at an entry level. Goods receipts are possible from release of purchase order, by which the vendors are expected to come along with their invoices and a Goods receipt (usually a code written on their receipt) is delivered to them alongside their invoice in other to facilitate their payments. Goods receipt starts the put away process, which is supported by different advanced strategies before enabling them get their money. Logistics Arrangement: The combining term for procedural arrangements and implementing procedures (training procedures) that together support, define, or implement the intended aim which must be in understandings between the Travelling Department and other departments under peacetime conditions. This arrangement is put in place on the companies HR. Portal; Evaluation of training programs: To help us maintain a high standard of our training we care to know if the programs are funding, implementing, voting for, receiving or objecting to are actually having the intended effect (and to what cost). This definition focuses on the question of whether the training program had, as indicated, the intended effect. However, equally important are questions such as how the program could be improved, whether the program is worthwhile, whether there are better alternatives, if there are unintended outcomes, and whether the program goals are appropriate and useful. A feedback is essential for the company to know how they are progressing, and so,
12

evaluation is crucial to the learner's (trainee) confidence too. A questionnaire helps to answer these questions, but the best way to answer the questions is for the evaluation to be a joint project between trainees and providers. The process of evaluation is considered to be of a relatively great value and a vital aspect of any sort of evaluation is its effect on the person being evaluated. But since trainees commitment to learning relies so heavily on confidence and a belief that the learning is achievable, the way in which tests and assessments are designed and managed, coupled with results presented back to the company, the feedback obtained from these trainees are been compiled and an Evaluation is being executed with the use of some analytical tools on MS-Excel which further aids to improve on future training events.

CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED
Challenges are part and parcel of life. Each day ushers a new opportunity enriched with diverse challenges of which we cant categorize which one will be the toughest. The challenges are relatively in-evitable and whatever it is we have to overcome it with a positive attitude and sensing the problem in the right way. Here is a few of the difficulties which only poses a form of delay or setback towards attaining a targeted goal during my Industrial Training experience. Paper jam on printers and photocopiers. Delay in the process of obtaining approvals from ITF; Delay on the release of Purchase order(s) from logistics department and sometimes an inbound on the companys data base.

CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

RECOMMENDATION The ITF should increase their publicity and go educate several companies, so that they would recognize the importance of SIWES for students thereby making placements in these companies easier. The Tertiary institutions should give a basic outline of the types of companies students can work in depending on their course of study before the program starts. This would serve to guide the students in getting placements at the appropriate place and in record time.

CONCLUSION
The aim and objectives of the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) has been duly achieved. This scheme has broadened my knowledge, given me a better understanding of the labour market and the world out there at large. As a student, have been able to obtain the most relevant and effective practical Industrial Training and been exposed to real life activities. Furthermore an awareness of the workplace has been developed in me having acquired behavior and interpersonal, and communication skills with the opportunity given to get a feel of the work vicinity and an exposure as a student. SIWES is a relevant program for student which should be taken advantage of for pre- development prior to graduates.
