290 Members Fill The Theatre

It might be a record for Annual General Meeting attendance in Nelson. The Nelson Civic Theatre Societys first AGM drew 290 members to the theatre on Sunday, September 22 to enjoy a pre-meeting social followed by the meeting and a free movie. There were some who didnt think we could do it, said outgoing president Anne DeGrace, who explained that 10 percent of the membership was required to make a quorum. That meant we needed 212 members to show up in order to change the by-laws for the future. Really, were victims of our own success. Having more than 2,000 members is a happy problem. At the AGM, DeGrace reported on the Societys accomplishments from municipal approval to occupation of the partly gutted space and subsequent clean-up, installation of seats, and reopening. contd on pg 15

Programming challenges and triumphs were reported by theatre manager Jason Asbell, who announced free monthly movie Mondays for NCTS members. Two motions regarding changes to the by-laws in the NCTS constitution were passed after some friendly amendments from the floor. NCTS board members were appointed by acclamation and introduced by Vice President Marilyn Mint. They are (continuing): John Brand, Rick Dietrich, Marilyn Mint, Darryl Santano, Ken Spencer, and (new): Don Johnston, Graeme Leadbeater, Mary Prothro, and Mark Stevens. We have a strong board with a range of expertise, said Mint, who acknowledged that there was still much work to be done to achieve a three-screen multi-purpose theatre. Bob Hall has spent two decades as a Nelson journalist and joins the college in the position of Community Liaison/Alumni Coordinator. Were so thrilled to have Bob join Selkirk College, says Selkirk College president Angus Graeme. Our success is defined by how effective we are at inspiring and engaging students and communities with our vision of post-secondary education in the West Kootenay/Boundary. Bobs skills, extensive experience and knowledge of this beautiful region will be an immediate asset to an effective community relations, development and engagement team. Hall will be tasked with helping the college communicate with current and prospective students. He will work with community leaders and alumni in continuing to build relationships that keep the college strong. Bob will be focussed on helping us continue to build our brand, says Gary Leier, director of human resources and community relations.
The strength of Selkirk College is our students and Bob will be very important in making sure we grow in that capacity well into the future. Hall arrived to Selkirk College from the Nelson Star where he was editor of the twice-weekly community newspaper since 2010. Prior to that he spent 15 years with the Nelson Daily News where he started as a reporter and finished as the newspapers last editor. Music Faculty Set To Turn Up Volume

Its an all-star musical line-up brought together in a special venue for a very special person. On Friday, October 18, Selkirk Colleges Music and Technology program instructors will bring together an eclectic night of entertainment at a special faculty concert. It will be the first time the multi-talented instructors play together at the Shambhala Music and Performance Hall on the Tenth Street Campus. You will have every style under the sun and thats what makes it really cool, says keyboards instructor Gilles Parenteau, one of the organizers of the event. Faculty regularly put on concerts, but this is the first event in three years. Parenteau says its important to showcase the talents of the instructors to those who are with them in the classroom learning on a daily basis. Its overdue... its nice to show our students what we can do, Parenteau says. The concert will feature instructors Steven Parish (drums), Mark Spielman (bass), Darren Mahe (guitar), Paul Landsberg (guitar), Laura Landsberg (vocal), Melody Diachun (vocal), John Tucker (guitar), Nikko Forsberg (guitar), Kiyo Elkuf (saxophone), Don MacDonald (violin/ vocal) and Parenteau (keyboard). They will play as an entire group and split off in different formations during the evening. The hour-and-a-half concert will feature everything from R&B to funky Celtic to jazz. Adding to the special vibe of the evening will be that the concert is a fundraiser for Selkirk College employee Pat Henman who continues to recover from a serious car accident this past summer. Henman is the Community Liaison/Alumni Coordinator for Selkirk College. She is also a vocalist with several recordings to her name and a well known local theatre director/ actress. West Kootenay-based potter and educator, Robin DuPont, has been nominated for the 2013 RBC Emerging Artist Peoples Choice Award. This annual award, presented by the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, recognizes five outstanding artists from across Canada who work in the field of ceramics. The award will go to the artist who receives the most votes from the participating public. DuPont lives in the Slocan Valley with his family and operates a studio year-round. He specializes in handthrown pieces intended for day-to-day use: a favourite coffee mug, drinking glass, platters and sizable dinner plates, tea pots, pitchers and vases. His work is fired in a wood-fired kiln, a large brick structure located out-ofdoors, surrounded by the coniferous forest of DuPonts property. The process of firing with wood is both time and labour intensive: collecting and splitting wood, bring the kiln up to temperature and monitoring it through its firing cycle, often late into the night. The wood provides not only the source of heat but imparts a unique surface finish to the work through ash deposits and heat flashing that occur during firing. Of the five artists nominated, DuPont stands alone in being the only artist working in functional ceramics (the other nominees work in sculpture and conceptual installation), the only resident of Western Canada, and the only artist living/working in a rural setting. With our deepest sorrow and gratitude we thank Rosemary (Romy) Wilson (Hornett) for being in our lives until she said her final goodbye October 1st, 2013. The light Romy brought to our worlds was contagious and apparent in all those who had the good fortune to get to know her; whether that was through a chat on the street or years of bonding with her. She truly was a unique and authentic woman. Her love and zest for life shone through the many chapters of her life. Romy was born in Laverna, Saskatchewan and lived in New Brigden, Alberta during her early years, moving with her family to Nelson BC at a young age. After completing high school she attended St Eugene School of Nursing in Cranbrook, and post graduate school at St. Michaels School of Nursing in Toronto. Her love of seeking out new adventures and caring for others took her nursing career to places including Cranbrook, Creston, Vancouver, Portland, Nelson and Trail. Romy met and married her husband, Dr. Frank Lloyd Wilson and together they raised two children, George and Pat, while living on Hazelwood Drive in Trail BC. Their second home was in Kaslo where time was spent fishing, enjoying the outdoors and the company of good friends. Romy provided excellent care for Frank in the later years of his life, allowing him to remain at home until his death in 1982. A few years later, Rosemary moved to Kaslo full time.
She was also predeceased by her parents, Rose and George Hornett; her brother
Dick (George) Hornett, and her sister Joan McNown. Her unconditional love and sense of humour will be remembered forever by her family: her son George (Sharon) Wilson and their family Sean, Jill and Ryan Black, Andrea, Mark, Adrianna, Eden, and Chet Rangeloff; her daughter Pat Wilson (Yogi Hincks); and her grandchildren Dallas Husar (Alex Grandmaison) and Devan Husar; along with her nieces and nephews Shirley (Bill) Jemson, Lynn (Dez) Daniher, Roberta (Al) Cox, Tom (Heather) McNown, Don (Fern) Hornett, and Ken (Carrie) Hornett and their families.

In 2003 I moved to Nelson and started doing general labour in construction and renovations. I was asked to repoint a chimney because I liked working at heights. I kept looking for those jobs and eventually got WETT certied to work with wood heat systems. For two years I joined the family at the Gray Creek Store as their stove guy, and learned about real service in the hearth industry. We still work together to provide a complete service to those looking to upgrade, or install a new, highefciency wood heat system. I do repointing, crown construction, ashing and masonry repairs for brick chimneys, as well as insurance inspections, installations of woodstoves and replaces, and service and sweeps for all wood heat systems. I love how I get to deal with the clients who really care about their woodstoves. Its a very intimate action to make and maintain a re in your home for warmth, comfort and light during the dark winter months. I love meeting all the unique people who live in this community. I feel honoured to be invited into their
homes, and I appreciate all the effort and care that has gone into the artistic and aesthetic homes and gardens. The community has been very supportive; I basically survive on referrals. Sometimes I nd interesting things in chimneys. Recently I found ve full sized ducks who thought it would be a good idea to gather in a large replace. They were on the smoke shelf and a little singed, but very well preserved. The seasonal nature of the industry allows me to do lots of backcountry skiing during the slower months. Also I love rock climbing redpoint means a clean ascent with no falls, placing protection while climbing.

Dear Diary: Social History Examined At The Nelson Library

The diaries of those who have become famous are popular reading, but its the diaries of ordinary peoplesometimes living in extraordinary timesthat historians look to for elusive details of our past. Social historians Patricia and Bob Malcolmson offer a glimpse into the role of personal journals in our understanding of history in a special presentation on Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 pm at the Nelson Public Library. Books authored by the Malcolmsons include (by Bob) Popular Recreations in English Society 1700-1850 (1973) and Life and Labour in England 1700-1780 (1981); and (by Patricia) English Laundresses: A Social History 1850-1930 (1986) and Me and My Hair: A Social History (2012). Their latest book, Women at the Ready: The Remarkable Story of the Womens Voluntary Services on the Home Front, was released in the summer. During the past decade they have been active in editing for publication some the best diaries that are held in the Mass Observation Archive at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. The Malcolmsons have edited three volumes of the diaries of the remarkable and prolific literary housewife, Nella Last, who lived in the shipyard city of Barrow-in-Furness: Nella Lasts Peace (2008), Nella Last in the 1950s (2010), and The Diaries of Nella Last: Writing in War and Peace (2012). I like to feel the beat of life, wrote Nella Last in 1941, and in her engaging writings she makes the reader feel it, too. With keen editing to best illustrate both the person and the times, the Nella Last series is an excellent example of the Malcolmsons expertise. The Nella Last diaries inspired a BAFTA award-winning TV drama. The presentation will be of interest for anyone with an interest in reading and writing history.

Award-Winning Film Coming To Nelson

Gold Fever is about the globalized race for resource extraction in Guatemala, and the lives of the communities and people who get caught in the front lines of the ensuing struggles. It takes viewers from a Guatemalan highland village to the corporate board rooms of the world especially Canadas connecting all the dots between them. Reviewers have called it eye-opening and inspiring, and just months ago it won the 2013 Rigoberta Mench Grand Prix at Montreals First Peoples Film Festival. Their mom is a Golden Retriever, and their dad had to be black, because all of these adorable pups are black and black/white. They are 10 weeks old, have had their rst vet check and vaccinations, and are ready to roll! Females and males available. They are playful, affectionate, goofy, and happy.
