OFF THE FIELD Boys have had up and down season

At deadline, Unicoi County baseball and softball teams are playing in the District 1-AA semi-finals, as expected. While going undefeated 14-0 in Watauga Conference play, the Blue Devils have been less than stellar against non-conference opponents, compiling a 6-10 record. A few factors have contributed to that losing record: inability to hit with runners on base, poor base running, occasional poor starting pitching but mostly errors in the field. There have been times when Unicoi County has what I have described as the Jekyll-and-Hyde syndrome. You dont know which team is going to show up. Some games the Blue Devils field the ball like Major Leaguers, and in other games they kick it around like its a soccer game instead. That lapse in concentration, especially in the post season, can be devastating particularly if you have aspirations of going to Murfreesboro. To be fair, losing pitcher Seth Whitson due to an appendicitis attack has hurt, but the Blue Devils still have enough pitching to get the job done. The Lady Devils completed their regular season with an excellent 37-3 overall record and, like their Blue Devil counterparts, went 14-0 in conference play. The Lady Devils three losses were characterized by poor defense and a lack of hitting. But, after each loss, the ladies rebounded and found a way to get it done. Their strong mind set has set them apart from other teams in the region. That was never more apparent than following a 6-5, 11-inning loss to Morristown West last week. A game in which errors factored into the loss, the Lady Devils responded by defeating IMAC champion Morristown East 7-0 in the regular season finale. The offense massacred East pitching for 12 hits in a momentum gathering game with the post season upon us. Unicoi County finished the regular season with a great 37-3 record. Keep it going, ladies! Its time for the Unicoi County tennis team to take a bow. Congratulations to freshman

Reed Jackson wins District tennis tourney

By Kevin Lewis [ OT Sports Editor ] klewis@erwinrecord.net

Freshman Reed Jackson defeated teammate Marcus DePaulo 6-2, 6-4 to win the District 1-AA Boys Singles Title last Friday at the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club. He was a challenging player, Jackson said. He was hitting them harder than usual. My serve was OK but I was more concentrated than usual since it was the Districts but we both get to go the regionals. Jackson defeated Seth Greene from West Greene 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-finals. DePaulo, who defeated North Greenes Kenny Hamer 6-0 and 6-0 in the other semi-final, was gracious in defeat. I started playing really bad, DePaulo said. I played better in the second set but Reed played a little better and won. I feel good about going to the regional, so I might get to play him again. In ladys singles action, Unicoi Countys Kelby Marston, the number-two seed, lost the title to number-one seed Jessica Brumit from Elizabethton, 6-1 and 6-2. Marston, who defeated Chuckey-Doaks Caitlin Miller 6-0,6-0 in the semi-finals, was philosophical about the loss. I felt I could have played better, Marston said. But, I am still happy about going to the regional. In ladys doubles action, it will be an all Unicoi County match. The team of Lacey Harris/Vanessa Bryant defeated South Greenes team of Hannah Wilds/Kendra Dunn 6-1 and 6-2 in one semi-final while the duo of Mary Beth Shults/Lyndsey Pate won the other semi-final in three sets, 6-4, 5-7 and 6-0 over Elizabethtons team of Brittini Thacker/Haley Thacker. The ladys doubles final match was not played and will be played possibly at either Milligan College or at

finals, Michael Smith, Unicoi County head coach, said. We have three from singles, two in doubles going to the regionals. Afterwards, All-Conference awards were announced. For the boys, Jackson was named AllConference Player of the Year. Wu and DePaulo were selected to the All-Conference Team. From the girls squad, Harris and Shults were named to the AllConference Team and head coach Michael Smith was selected Conference Coach of the Year. Since the boys won the conference title, they will participate in the boys team regional on May 8 at Elizabethton. The Individual Regional Tournament will be held at Frank Lorino Park in Morristown on May 11. Tuesday, April 28 vs Sullivan North Unicoi County ended the regular season on a winning note as the boys won 8-1 while the girls won 7-2. The boys ended the regular season undefeated, going 9-0 overall, 7-0 in Watauga Conference play. In boys singles, Jackson and DePaulo each won 8-1. Wu won 8-2 while Tyler Cole won 8-0. Jayson Richardson lost 8-9 with a 5-7 tie breaker. Jordan Cooper won by forfeit. In boys doubles, the teams of Wu/Brandon Adams won 8-1, Cole/Cooper won 8-2 and Jackson/DePaulo won 8-0 (forfeit). The ladies finished the season with a 7-2 overall record, 6-1 in conference play which was good enough for second place. In girls singles action, Marston won 8-2. Harris won 8-0. Shults won 8-1. Pate won 8-3. Maggie Tipton lost 6-8 and Nicole Downard won 8-4. The ladies took two of three doubles matches. Harris/Bryant won 8-4. Shults/Pate won 8-1 while the team of Laura Willis/Haley Ledford lost 3-8.

track and field event for Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. Performances from all meets during the season are sent into the newspaper and the top nine are selected, based on performance in the meets. A qualified checklist is published with several alternates listed in each event. Athletes competing form Unicoi County High School were Cameron Miller, Thad Higgins and Harrison Becker in pole vault. Miller finished in third place, with a jump of 11 feet 6 inches. Miller was ranked number one in the long jump and triple jump, with a qualifying jump of 44 feet 5-1/2 inches. He won the event with a 43 feet 1 inch triple jump and he finished second in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet 7 inches. Guillermo Mendoza was in the discus competition, throwing his personal best of 134 feet 10 inches. He was ranked number nine going into the competition and he finished in third place. Mikayla Bennett, a freshman thrower at UCHS, continues to improve. She went into this big time competition as an alternate. She got to throw because another athlete failed to show up and she finished a very respectable ninth place in the shot put with a fine throw. Others competing were Rebekah Hawkins and Alyssa Kennedy in the pole vault. Several other team members listed in the alternates were Kristen Haun, another freshman, in the high jump and relay teams (boys 1600-meter relay) - Rick Barrett, Phillip Bailey, Scott Stehlik, Matt Holtzclaw and 3200-meter relay, Rick Barrett, Ryan Winders, Matt Holtzclaw and Thad Higgins were in the alternate list of their events but did not compete. This week At The Erwin Records Monday evening presstime, the Blue Devils were set to compete in the North Regional/ Subsectional Meet at Sullivan North High School. Results were not available. The top four athletes in each event advanced to the East Sectional Meet at Chattanooga Christian High School in Chattanooga. Then the athletes advance to the state meet in Murfreesboro.

Blue Devils advance in District tournament

The Blue Devils won two of their three games last week, including a 12-2 mercy-rule win over South Greene at Joe OBrien Field in Elizabethton in a District 1-AA Tournament quarterfinal game on Saturday. Unicoi Countys record stands at 21-10 overall. The weather was overcast and rainy Saturday but Joe OBrien Field was ready for the opening round of District play. It didnt start off well for Unicoi County. D.W.Whitson was the starting pitcher but after the Rebels reached Whitson for two quick runs on two errors and a base hit. This being a single-elimination game, head coach Charlie Baxter quickly replaced Whitson with Logan Rice, who retired the side without another batter reaching base. We werent focused for whatever reason early on, Baxter said. The two runs South Greene scored would be their only runs of the game as Unicoi County quickly responded with a big offensive outburst. With one out in the bottom of the first, Corey Headley reached on an error. Rice also reached on an error that allowed Headley to score Unicoi Countys first run. Steven Kiernan stepped in to the batters box and the third baseman took a healthy cut and sent a John Brooks pitch over the left center-field fence for a two-run home run as Unicoi County had the lead for good, 3-2. He threw me a hanging breaking ball, Kiernan said. It was high and inside. It was the second home run I have hit in this park. It felt good. According to Baxter, Kiernans home run was key. Kiernans home run was big, Baxter said. Getting those two runs back plus one that gave us the lead. Whatever lapse in concentration the Blue Devils had in the first inning had disappeared and South Greene was going to bear the brunt of the Blue Devils offense. Rice, who would win the game in relief, his eighth of the season, struck out nine while walking one and held South Greene to just two hits the remainder of the game had one of his best performances of the season in what may have been the most important game given the circumstances. I felt real good on the mound, Rice said. My control was good. This was a big win. It might wake us up. The offense certainly woke up. In the second inning, the onslaught continued as Unicoi County tallied three more runs for a 6-2 lead. Bobby Smith led off with a walk and then stole second. Holden Tolley followed Smith with a walk. Headley drove in Smith with a double down the leftfield line for a 4-2 advantage. After Rices ground out to third for the first out, Kiernan drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a sharp single to left as Unicoi County led 6-2. Nick Presley replaced Brooks following Kiernans single. Smith would score again in third inning when Rice reached on an error for a 7-2 lead. Rice had South Greene in the palm of his hand. At one point, Rice struck out five of six batters as his breaking ball was working beautifully. The Blue Devils put the game away in the bottom of the fourth by scoring five runs off of the Rebels third pitcher, Zach Haire. With one out, John Hilliard walked and then scored Unicoi Countys eighth run on a solid single to right by Scott Gibson. Ben Powers then walked. Smith then sacrificed Gibson and Powers over to second and third. Tolley then walked to load the bases. Headley stepped up to the plate and

Lady Devils enter District 1-AA semifinals

The Lady Devils, like their male counterparts, won two of three games last week, including the District 1-AA quarterfinal game against visiting Sullivan North last Friday. Kara Woods won her 34th game of the season and it was spectacular. Woods pitched a no-hitter, striking out 15 batters and walked one. The one walk denied her a perfect game as Unicoi County ended Norths season and advanced to the semi-finals. Though he has seen it before, Woods had head coach Grady Lingerfelt shaking his head in disbelief. Karas control was as good as its been all season, Lingerfelt said. She was on today! After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Devils came to life offensively. Lindsey Allens base hit in the bottom of the second scored Ali Gardner, who reached on an error, as Unicoi County took a 1-0 lead. Allen and Elizabeth Raby both scored on Mikayla Treadways second hit of the game, a single to right center as Unicoi County led 3-0. Woods singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Kilby Holsclaw, courtesy running for Woods, advanced to third on a double by Whitley Hensley off the left-field fence on a line. A sacrifice y to center field by Gardner scored Holsclaw for a 4-0 Lady Devil lead after three complete innings. The offense continued to pour on the runs with three in the fourth. A double by Hensley and singles by Gardner and Woods drove in three runs as Unicoi County led 7-0 as offensively, defensively and pitching wise Unicoi County was hitting on all cylinders. Woods strikeouts came in bunches. She struck out five in a row, three in a row and struck out the last seven batters she faced. Norths Kiesha White was the lone base runner when she walked in the top of the fifth inning. No Lady Raider went past first base. Meanwhile, the Lady Devils offense wasnt finished producing runs. Unicoi County scored four runs in the fifth. Treadway drove in her third run with a sacrifice y to center field that scored Brittany Depew from third. Courtney Hughes, who replaced Allen in left field, doubled and later scored when Whitney Webb reached on an error. Woods singled home Webb for a 10-0 lead. Hensleys single sent courtesy runner Holsclaw to second. Gardner reached on a fielders choice as Holsclaw was forced out at third base. Emilee Lovettes single to left center scored Hensley as Unicoi County led 11-0. The Lady Devils three runs in the sixth ended the scoring blitz. With one out, Hughes singled to left. After Treadway popped up for the second out, Sarah Lingerfelt singled to left center. On a double steal, Hughes went to third and Lingerfelt to second. Holsclaw made a rare pinch-hitting appearance, batting for Woods. She responded with a double to left center that scored Hughes and Lingerfelt to give Unicoi County a 13-0 lead. Pinch-hitting for Hensley was Rachel Absalom, who doubled home Holsclaw for Unicoi Countys 14th and final run. Woods retired the side in the seventh as Unicoi County advanced to the District 1-AA semi-finals. The Lady Devils scored 14 runs on 17 hits and four Lady Raider errors. The offense finally came alive today, Hensley said. Its good it was against Sullivan North. We usually dont play well against them. But, we are on the right path. Treadway had three hits, scored once and drove in three runs. Webb singled, reached on an error and scored twice. Woods collected three hits and drove in two runs. Holsclaw doubled in two runs and scored three times. Hensley had three hits, two doubles, one run-batted-in and scored once. Gardner singled, drove in three runs and reached base four times. Lovette singled and drove in a run. Raby singled and scored once. Haley Tittle reached on an error. Depew reached on an error and scored once. Allen singled, scored once and drove in a run while Hughes had two hits, a double, one

slammed the first pitch over the left field pitch for grand-slam home run and a 12-2 lead. I knew he had to come inside with a fastball, Headley said. He threw it right down the middle and I just swung at it. The grand slam was Headleys ninth home run of the year. His five runs-batted-in gave him a total of 48. Headley leads Unicoi County in both categories. After striking out the first two batters, Rice gave up a bloop single by Kenan Wilhoit in the top of the fifth inning. Rice made the last out as he caught Eric Davis pop up to end the game as the Blue Devils breathed a sigh of relief as they go to the District semi-finals. Headley (five RBIs) and Kiernan (four RBIs) provided the offensive muscle as they combined for nine runs-batted-in. Kiernan has 39 runs-batted-in, six stolen bases and seven home runs for the season. Headley and Kiernan both had good days, Baxter said. Monday, April 27 vs Pigeon Forge Ethan Bennetts two-run first-inning single wasnt enough as Pigeon Forge defeated Unicoi County 9-3 in a non-conference game. Six Unicoi County errors led to the Blue Devils 10th loss of the season.

D.W Whitson was the starting and losing pitcher. Whitson gave up nine runs on eight hits, struck out six and walked four. Whitsons record drops to 5-2. Kiernan drove in Unicoi Countys third run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a ground out that scored Rice. Hilliard, Headley and Rice each scored a run. Headley and Rice each collected one hit. Bennett had two singles and drove in two runs. Cory Howell, who replaced Whitson on the mound in the seventh and struck out one batter, scratched out an infield hit. Tuesday, April 28 vs Sullivan East The Blue Devils ended the regular season on a high note with a solid 6-2 win on senior night. Headley started and won his third game of the season a complete game victory as he scattered nine hits, gave up two runs, stranded eight base runners, struck out six, walked one and threw one wild pitch. It feels great to win here on senior night, Headley said. We won this for Bobby Smith who couldnt be here because of a death in his family. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Unicoi County scored three runs when Powers hit a bases-clearing double to the left field corner. Rice, who collected three hits, drove in a run in the fourth when his single to left scored Tolley who

doubled. Kiernan followed with a bloop single to right that scored Whitson, who was courtesy running for Headley, who reached on an infield hit. Headley drove in the sixth and final Blue Devil run with a solo home run to right center field in the bottom of the sixth. I had been looking for something to hit all night, Headley said. I got a pitch on the outside corner and hit it to the opposite field. The Blue Devils defense tightened up-committing no errors. I was real pleased with our defense tonight, Baxter said. Headley pitched very well. This is a big win 20th win speaks well of the team and we hope to get a few more. Headley, along with Rice, had three hits. Headley scored three runs and drove in one. Rice scored once and also drove in a run. Kiernan singled and drove in a run while Powers doubled in three runs. Bennett walked and scored once. Gibson legged out an infield hit. Tolley doubled and scored a run. This Week At The Erwin Records Monday evening presstime, the Blue Devils were scheduled to face Sullivan North, who defeated West Greene 6-3, in the District semifinals. Other games this week will be determined by the tournament bracket.

stolen base, and scored twice. Despite a fine performance, its just one District game and Lingerfelt is playing it close to the vest. We need to stay focused, Lingerfelt said. Its business as usual. Tuesday, April 28 vs Morristown West In a rematch of the championship game of the Morristown West Invitational Softball Tournament, West prevailed 6-5 in 11 innings. Unicoi County had a 2-0 lead that Kara Woods protected until the Lady Trojans scored a run in both the fifth and seventh innings. International tiebreaker rules went into effect in the eighth inning the last out of the previous inning goes to second base as a runner with no outs at the beginning of the inning. Each team scored a run in each of the extra innings. In the top of the eleventh inning, with Gardner, attempting to score from third on a ground ball to first, was tagged out at home plate. The Lady Trojans scored the winning run when Kalynn Doute, who was on second, scored when Gabe McKinney bunted back to Woods. Woods fired the ball to third to get the lead runner, but nobody was covering third base as the throw went into left field for an error that let Doute score the winning run. Thursday, April 30 vs Morristown East The Lady Devils ended the regular season with a solid 7-0 win over the IMAC champion Lady Hurricanes. Woods won her 33rd game of the season, striking out five as Unicoi County entered the District 1-AA Tournament with an outstanding 37-3 record. Unicoi County scored three runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Webb and Gardner. Hensley also scored a run. Webb singled home two more runs in the second inning for a 5-0 Lady Devils lead. Lovette and Raby each drove in a run in the seventh for Unicoi Countys final runs. Treadway had two hits. Webb had two hits, two runs-batted-in and scored once. Woods collected a base hit. Hensley had two base hits and scored twice. Gardner had three hits, one run-batted-in and scored twice. Lovette had two base hits and one run-batted-in. Raby drove in a run on a fielders choice. Due to inclement weather, the District semi finals and finals were moved indoors to the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club. The courts were available for the tournament until 3 p.m. Management was kind enough to let the boys singles match finish, which was past 3 p.m. But, the girls doubles finals match was not played and will be played this week but when was not known at deadline. The girls doubles final will be another all Unicoi County affair as the teams of Lacey Harris-Vanessa Bryant square off against Mary Beth Shults and Lyndsey Pate. Jackson was selected as the Watauga Conference Player of the Year. DePaulo and teammate Charlie Wu were also selected to the AllConference Team. For the ladies, Harris and Shults were named to the All-Conference Team. Head coach Michael Smith was named Conference Coach of the Year.
