Difference between Collaboration and Communication

Communication and Collaboration have often been used interchangeably and synonymously over and over again by different people. It would be interesting to get back to the basics and start with the definition of the two terms to build upon a true understanding of the difference between the two.

Difference between Communication and Collaboration

Communication is the expression or the exchange of information by speech, writing, gestures or conduct. Collaboration is not as commonly defined as communication; however, it can be defined as creation of a valuable function resulting out of working together, jointly with one another. One can simply think here that working together to create value is defined as collaboration which is just not possible without communication. This is where the notion of using these terms in a common sense prevails. Simple communication takes the shape of collaboration if the objective is marked towards productive values.

Communication and Collaboration differ in the nature of actions involved for both of them and that is one of the major differences between the two.

Collaboration is more creative in nature as it results in generation of new knowledge, newer products, and new opinions.

Communication on the other hand, need not necessarily be creative in nature and it can just me mere simple exchange of the existing information. Secondly, collaboration always requires working jointly- thus, at a minimum it requires the participation of two active members or individuals. In contrast, communication may involve a passive receiver.

Collaboration and communication are different functions. While collaboration may or may not require communication, communication is usually considered a component of collaboration. Additionally, over time, communication can become collaboration.
