WHICH BRIDGES HAVE SIGNIFICANT CRACKING?

This problem is predominantly found in:

Reinforced concrete deck girder bridges built between 1947 and 1961 (Interstate Era)

How Many Are There?

Problem bridges: RCDG built 1947-1961 We asked FHWA to do a regional search for similar bridges on major state routes, they found: 389 remaining in Oregon 36 remaining in Washington 4 remaining in Idaho 2 remaining in California In total, we have 555 state bridges with cracking potential.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL END OF LIFE?

First report of visible cracking Regular inspection every 2 years

CONDITION

First report of measurable cracking Posted load limit for permit vehicles Crack survey & monitoring Report of serious crack growth Posted load limit for legal or permit vehicles (END OF USEFUL SERVICE LIFE)

Why Is It Happening?
ODOTs design met code, but was lean.
In the late 1950s the AASHTO shear design code changed.

Truck volumes, and permitted loads have increased.

ODOT continued using RCDGs. Late going to P/S. Other states had more aggressive replacement programs.

HOW MANY CRACKED BRIDGES ARE THERE?

Bridge inspection has identified: 487 out of 555 bridges of this type with varying degrees of crack problems
178 with low density cracks randomly dispersed Not an urgent concern but could get worse 180 with medium density cracks, mostly near supports Need frequent monitoring. Likely candidates for repair or replacement. 129 with high density cracks widely dispersed Need frequent monitoring. Likely candidates for repair or replacement.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT FUNDING?

Recent available bridge funding (total project cost), $ Millions*

Current STIP funds are not adequate to keep the overall condition of all of ODOTs 2,650 bridges from declining. Current STIP funding does not resolve the cracked, earthquake vulnerable and coastal & historic bridge problems. OTIA bonding funds will be used toward the cracked bridge problem.
