Commissioning and configuring a high-availability S7 connection via Ethernet with SIMATIC WinCC V5.

1 SP1 or higher (from CD 07/2001)

QUESTION: How can I set up a high-availability S7 connection for SIMATIC WinCC V5.1 SP1 / WinCC V6.0 SP1 (or higher) via Industrial Ethernet with the SIMATIC NET CD 07/2001 (or higher)? ANSWER: This example takes a CP1613 which realizes the S7 communication via SIMATIC WinCC with an S7-400 H system in the Ethernet. Requirement for this procedure is an existing configuration of the S7 400 H system with network link. Warning: S7 H connections are available on for CP1613. You also have the option of slotting two CP1613s. It is not possible to use the normal network cards here. General information: A difference is made between two configuration tools: NCM PC: NCM PC is supplied on the SIMATIC NET CD and is for creating PC projects and opening STEP 7 projects. However, it is not possible to edit the S7 blocks in the STEP 7 project with this software. STEP 7: A full version of STEP 7 is installed on your PC. It is not necessary to install NCM PC. The PC station will be configured with the STEP 7 package already installed.

Note: STEP 7 is required for commissioning the PC station on the computer. It is not absolutely necessary to have a license for STEP 7 on this computer. Configuring the PC station: Once you have successfully installed the hardware and software and have restarted the computer accordingly, the commissioning wizard opens as the first step:

Fig. 1: SIMATIC NET Commissioning Wizard after restarting the computer The number of steps you take depends on the number of PC modules detected in your PC. The more modules you operate in the computer, the more steps are run through. Click on "Next" to get to the next page.

Fig. 2: SIMATIC NET Commissioning Wizard - defining operation of the module Here you can set the module to one of two modes. "Use module for productive operation in configured PC station" You must select this option if you want to communicate with the OPC server via this network card. When communicating with an H system, activate the option "Activate ISO protocol only (for H systems)". "Use module for PG operation only" You select this option if you want to operate this network card with STEP 7 for online functions or wish to use it as a normal office communications card. This option is not dealt with in this entry.

=> Here you select " Use module for productive operation in configured PC station" and activate the option "Activate ISO protocol only (for H systems)". Go to the next dialog by clicking on "Next".

. Fig. 3: SIMATIC NET Commissioning Wizard - using the OPC server Here you can decide which interface you wish to use for access. "SIMATIC NET OPC Server in configured PC station", communications are via an OPC client. "Configure more applications", communications are via another application - e.g. C interface.

=> Here you select "SIMATIC NET OPC Server in configured PC station" . Enter the name of your application and click on "Next".

Fig. 4: Entering the application name Click on "Next" to save the configuration.

Fig. 5: SIMATIC NET Commissioning Wizard - saving the configuration By acknowledging with "OK" you save the configuration just created. Using the "Station Configuration Editor" you can check whether the configuration has been accepted. The station configuration editor can also be started via the icon on the desktop.

Fig. 6: Starting the Station Configuration Editor In the Station Configuration Editor you can now see the configuration as you specified it in the "Commissioning Wizard": WinCC Application on Index 1 CP1613 on Index 3.

Fig. 7: Station Configuration Editor In the next step the SIMATIC NET "PC Station Wizard" is started.

Fig. 8: SIMATIC NET Commissioning Wizard - starting the PC Station Wizard There are two main options in the dialog displayed: 1. Select the option "Edit saved configuration" if you want to extend an existing STEP 7 project. Find the project with the configuration of the H system which is to be edited and activate the option "Insert/synchronize the local PC configuration in the selected project". 2. The option "Create a new project and connection" is used if no configuration exists yet and you wish to create a new project. In the next step a project name is assigned and you must select the option "Create a copy of the local PC station" . With this option the wizard creates a ready-configured PC station in STEP 7 or NCM PC. Since there must be a configuration of the H system already available, you select the "Edit saved configuration" option. Note: Before you can continue working, you have to transfer the STEP 7 project to the computer being used.

Fig. 9: Starting the PC Station Wizard Press the "Browse" button to find the existing project of the H system and add it to the local configuration of the PC station. For this you activate the option "Insert/synchronize the local PC configuration in the selected project".

Fig. 10: Selecting the existing configuration for the H system Select the option "Change hardware configuration" to open the hardware configuration of the PC station to be inserted into the existing project.

Fig. 13: Properties of the CP1613 In the "General" tab, press the "Properties" button to configure the interface and Ethernet connection. Enter the MAC address of the CP. Then you select as subnetwork the bus created in the existing project of the H system so that the PC with the H system can be connected to an Ethernet network. Close the dialogs with "OK".

Fig. 14: Properties of the interface Save and compile the hardware configuration via "Station > Save and Compile". To configure the connection you open NetPro via "Options > Configure Network". Here you check the connection of your PC station to the Ethernet network of the H system.

Fig. 15: STEP 7 or NCM PC - NetPro To insert a connection you select the WinCC application and then you create a connection via "Insert > New Connection". As partners you select the S7 400 H CPUs and choose "S7 connection fault-tolerant" for the connection type. Remove the check mark for "Display properties before inserting". Close the dialog with "Apply" and "Close".

Fig. 16: Inserting a new connection in NetPro with STEP 7 V5.2 If you mark the WinCC application in the PC station, the connection created is displayed in the connections table.

Fig. 17: S7 connection created in NetPro. Now that you have created a high-reliability S7 connection the connection configuration is terminated. Save and compile the project ("Network > Save and Compile"). This updates the information in the project.

Fig. 18: Saving and compiling Important here is the error information. If warnings are displayed here, they are to be considered as information only. In the case of errors, however, it is not possible to load the configuration. Mark the "SIMATIC PC station" icon and the table with the connection created disappears in the display. In NetPro load the configuration locally onto your PC via "PLC > Download to current project > Selected station".

Fig. 19: Downloading the target system Here you are reminded that the downloading procedure will delete the data already on the components concerned and the new information will be downloaded to them.

Fig. 20: Stopping the target module Acknowledge with "OK" to execute the download. Here the following error message might occur: "Cannot reach station manager". Possible causes for this behavior are described in the Internet in Entry ID 12033912. Note: After downloading the PC station you must download the S7 in exactly the same way as the PC station (Select S7 station > Download target system). Warning: If downloading cannot be complete successfully, copy the entire project to your PG or your PC. From there you then download the configuration to the S7 via MPI. Now in the Commissioning Wizard you click on "Next". If you are using user applications, select "Do not use a icon file" and click on "Next". Now click on "Finish" to close the Commissioning Wizard.

Fig. 21: Closing the SIMATIC NET Commissioning Wizard Start WinCC via "Start > SIMATIC > WinCC > Windows Control Center". Open your WinCC project. Navigate in the Explorer view of the WinCC project via "Tag Management > SIMATIC S7 PROTOCOL_SUITE" to "Named Connections" in order to configure the connection to the H system.

Fig. 22: Marking Named Connections You create a connection by right-clicking on Named Connections and then selecting "New Connection". Enter a name for the connection and click on "Properties".
