13 The district must have more funding to improve academic achievement. 14 The district must find a way for funds to go directly to schools. The district's finance system needs to be redesigned so that 70% or more of funding follows students to their public school or program of choice. 16 Funding for schools should be weighted to particular needs such as poverty. Spending should be more transparent and have "return on investment" measures so that we all have a 17 clearer understanding of where taxpayer money is spent and what brings the biggest return on public education investments. 18 Negotiations with all associations (unions) should be held in the open. 15

What do you believe is the most important role a school board member should play in ensuring all students in the district receive the education they need and deserve?

I believe the most important role is to put into place effective policy and procedures that reflect the educational needs and values of our community, invite open discussion, and behave in a civil and professional manner. A Board member should be a leader that sets the example for civil discourse and respect, while facilitating local solutions.

Why or why not?

I do not support the recent tax increase ballot measure. This ballot measure will effectively take more tax payer money out of D49 to be redistributed to other districts then we will get back. The ballot measure is not a local solution and is not supported by D49 voters. I do not believe throwing more money into education without meeting the priorities and accountability at the local level is a solution. Our community has been hit hard by this economy and the recent Black Forest Fire disaster and flooding. D49 leadership has recently unveiled an exciting new strategic plan that is well thought out and has buy-in by our schools and our local community that will fully utilize our scarce resources. We need D49 resources, especially tax payer dollars, to stay in D49. Were you endorsed by the union?

I am endorsed by the Falcon Teacher Education Association (FTEA). D49, like all school districts throughout Colorado, are seeking local solutions to our unique set of circumstances. I believe that civility, professional conduct, transparency, and inclusion by the D49 BOE, staff, teachers, parents and students is essential to meeting the challenges within our district and our community. The D49 BOE needs to hear the perspectives of all of our stakeholders to better formulate policies that provide those local solutions.

What do you believe is the most important role a school board member should play in ensuring all students in the district receive the education they need and deserve? I have always believed children deserve multiple opportunities to help them succeed. Serving on the school board has been a privilege and given me the chance to be a voice for parents and staff to build trust with our community. My priorities will be to help pass a bond/mill levy to help our overcrowding and provide funds for operating needs. My most important role is to continue to build trust with the community by listening to their priorities to allow us to pass a bond to build more schools. We have amazing students and staff that deserve facilities that will allow innovation and creativity to flourish.

If you have children who do or did attend schools in the district please list those schools. Please print or type your response. I have two daughters that have been in Falcon District 49 their entire school career. Shelby is a senior at Sand Creek High School. Carly is a freshman at Sand Creek High School

Do you support the nearly one billion dollar tax increase on the ballot this year? Why or why not? Our district is in need of a mill levy for operations and a bond to build new schools. Falcon District 49 is one of the fastest growing districts in the state and we are floor funded. We will always take extra funding but prefer to ask our local community for funds that will be used as our taxpayers prioritize. So no I dont support Amendment 66 but prefer local control of tax increases.

Were you endorsed by the union? Yes. Falcon District 49 has a small teachers union that doesnt have a MOU. We believe if we treat all staff with respect and apply policy consistently, we dont need a MOU.

Do you support the nearly one billion dollar tax increase on the ballot this year? Why or why not?

No I do not. While I do believe that the growth of D49 demands an increase in funding, this tax increase does not address the inequity in the funding of our district. In fact it asks the constituents of D49 to support other districts while leaving our children under funded. We are the fourteenth largest district in the state, yet our funding is second to last. We are 177 th out of 178 districts in the state and will continue to be if this tax increase is past. Also I do not believe that it adequately address teachers performance.
