relationships, cooperation and teamwork. Such children, when they were put in a normal social
environment with elders and peers, had great difficulty in interpreting their social world and were
able to adjust competently only after great effort.
Which of the following can be legitimately inferred from the paragraph above?
1. Development of important social skills among adult humans necessitates a social environment
having parents and siblings.
2. A social environment goes a long way in developing important social skills among
children.
3. The effects of total social isolation do not apply to animals.
4. Children brought up in a very social environment should find social isolation easier to handle.

Directions for questions from 29 to 40: Read the passages and answer the questions given below:
Passage 1

When high tidal waves hit the Indian coastline the last time before December 26, 2004, they were not
called tsunami waves as they are now known. Ancient scriptures and literature have evidence that waves
from the Indian Ocean did hit the Nagapattinam coast in 900 AD and destroyed a monastery.

According to literature available in the library of Thondaiman kingdom in PuduKottai, Tamil Nadu, it
was during the reign of Raja Raja Chola that waves had washed away the monastery and several temples,
and killed hundreds of people. There is evidence of this even in Kalki Krishnamurthys novel Ponniyin
Selvan-The Pinnacle of Sacrifice.

In the chapter The Sea Rises, the author explains how the sea had risen so high it seemed to be touching
the mass of dark clouds suspended in the sky. The black mountain of water, far from being stationery,
was moving steadily forward. The sea inundated warehouses and sheds and began to flow into the streets.
Ships and boats seemed suspended in mid-air, precariously poised over the water peaks. The book also
describes how the gushing waters swallowed an elephant.
According to Vijay Kumar Thondaiman, brother of the Thondaiman prince, the library of the royal family
of Pudukotti had a collection of 12000 books dating back to the17th century. These books talk about the
Buddhist monastery-Raja Raja Chozan went to conquer Sri Lanka and instead became a devotee of the
Buddha himself and allowed the Buddhists to build a temple in Nagapattinam. It was around that time
that the monastery was totally washed away.

More about such havoc is described in the great epic Sillapathikaram, written in Tamil 2000 years ago
by Elango Adigal, a Jain monk. He has recorded how Cauvery Poompatinam, now known as Poompuhur,
was destroyed and even today, we find the ruins excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India. It talks
about the sea waves that came and destroyed the place. The waters came inland and evidence of
destruction of temples is still there. A whole township and its people were forced to shift to drier lands.
They are now the Chettairs, a leading business community of Tamil Nadu, who are supposed to have
existed from the Sanagm age.

Another historic temple town- Mahabalipuram-also faced the fury of the sea and in 1200 AD, a portion of
the famous temple was washed away. Many other monuments were also lost. The Pallava dynasty, to
SNAP SHOTS 2010 (5)

which Narasimha Pallava and his father Mahendra Varman belonged, had built the Mahabalipuram
temple.

The Wonder that Was India by A.L.Basham speaks of the Chozha, Pallava, and Pandya dynasties and
also describes Mahabalipurams destruction by sea waves. The History of South India by K.A.Neelkanta
Shastry talks about changes in the level of the Coromandal coast and mentions how Korkai and Kayal on
the Tirunelveli coast are now buried under dunes.

Passage 2

Science fiction is coming alive. A laser beam- a painless zap of light- is making incisions, vapourizing
tumours, closing blood vessels, reducing pigmentation, and treating skin wrinkles. Technological
advances are on to newer applications of future generation of lasers.

All laser surgeries use the principle of selective photo-thermolysis, choosing a specific amount and
wavelength of laser energy for a particular tissue. Different types of lasers are available of which each
type works in a different manner, and is used for different treatment options.

Lasers have made their way into cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, eyes, ears and nose. The
use of lasers in cosmetic surgery is almost 50 to 60 percent. Initially lasers were used to remove port-wine
stains, spider-veins, and hemangiomas. Then came hair removal, photo-rejuvenation, removal of
wrinkles, and removal of pigmentation, freckles, birth marks, and tattoos. For each procedure, different
types of lasers are used and the power has to be adjusted according to the skin colour, explains Dr.
L.D.Dhami, practicing cosmetic, plastic and laser surgeon attached to the Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai.
SNAP SHOTS 2010 (5)

Lasers are also used to transplant hair and in surgery to stop snoring and even relieve pain, adds Dr. Sri
Ganesh, fellow, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Medical Director, Netradhama, Bangalore. Laser
is also used for refractive surgeries, retinal surgeries and glaucoma surgeries of the eyes. Lasik Laser
surgery for correcting refractive errors of the eye is an effective and safe surgery when done with good
equipment and experienced surgeons.

Every surgical field today makes use of lasers in surgery. Surgeons have started using laser as a light
scalpel, as Dr. Yatish Aggarwal, a senior faculty at the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and
Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, puts it, Laser as a surgical tool is a revolution because of its high
precision, quickness, and its ability to cut and coagulate tissues without causing any damage to the
surrounding healthy tissue.

However, even with the sparkle, pure colour and high-energy beam, the laser may not always be the best
tool for surgery. Certain lasers may temporarily or permanently discolour the skin of a dark-skinned
person. Some types of laser surgeries are not advisable for pregnant women and individuals with cardio-
pulmonary diseases or other serious health problems. Imprecisely aimed, lasers can burn or destroy
healthy tissues.

34. According to the passage, what does laser surgery involve?
1. It involves newer applications of future generations of lasers.
2. It involves the application of the principle of selective photo-thermolysis.
3. They involve treatment of cosmetic and reconstruction surgery.
4. They are just a painless zap of light.

35. Which of the following is not a use of laser in ophthalmology?
1. Removal of pigmentation.
2. Retinal surgeries.
3. Glaucoma surgeries.
4. Refractive surgeries.

36. Which of the following is not a benefit of laser surgery?
1. Its quickness.
2. Its ability to cut and coagulate tissues without any damage.
3. Its ability to be a revolution.
4. Its high precision.

37. Which of the following is not a drawback of laser surgery?
1. They are not advisable for pregnant women.
2. They are called light scalpel.
3. They are not good for patients of cardio-pulmonary diseases.
4. They can harm or burn healthy tissues.

1. Substituting and ,
Hence there are 5 prime factors.
Answer is (1).

2. Taking few values of n would help us realize the catch in this question
If n =5, is 4! i.e. 1 2 3 4 divisible by 5? No.
If n =6, is 5! i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 divisible by 6? Yes.
If n =7, is 6! i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 6 divisible by 7? No.
If n =8, is 7! i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 divisible by 8? Yes.
This should make it clear what whenever n is not a prime number, (n 1)! would be divisible by n,
even though n itself is not present in (n 1)!, there are factors that multiply to n.
But if n is prime, no two factors can multiply to form n and n itself is not present in (n 1)! And
hence (n 1)! would not be divisible by n.
From 1 to 50, there are 15 prime numbers.
BUT consider n =4. Even though 4 is a not a prime number, 3! is not divisible by 4. So n =4 too
will be in the answer. So for a total 16 values of n, (n 1)! is not divisible by n.

4. Consider the number to be 16401b61a4. Since it is divisible by 72, it is divisible by 8 and 9.
Hence 1a4 is divisible by 8 implying a =0 or 4 or 8.
Next using these values of a and checking divisibility by 9,
When a =0, b =4
When a =4, b =0 or 9
When a =8, b =5
Thus there are four such numbers.
Answer is (3).

5. If we use Product of number =HCF LCM, we get the answer as 270. But this is not the correct
answer. For any set of numbers, the LCM has to be a multiple of the HCF. Since 864 is not a
multiple of 75, the data is inconsistent.

Let the amount of milk in the 8 litres of solution is x.
Expected concentration =
x

64

If water is added first, the volume of solution increases to 11 litres but the amount of milk in it
remains the same. So concentration of milk =x/11 . After 3 litres is removed from the mixture, the
concentration of milk remains the same because removing part of the solution only changes the
volume, not the concentration of any of the constituents.
Ratio of the expected concentration of the milk to the actual concentration of the milk

:

=55:64
Method 2:
The proportion of milk only changes when water is added. And not when part of the solution is
removed. Further the proportion of milk varies inversely with the volume when water is added.
When water had to be added,
it was expected that 3 litres of water be added to 5 litres of solution i.e. an increase in the volume
from 5 litres to 8 litres
but actually 3 litres of water was added to 8 litres of solution i.e. an increase in the volume from 8
litres to 11 litres.

The question does not mention if they run in the same direction or in opposite direction. Further the
question is asking which of the following could be a possible value, suggesting that many values
are possible, of which only one option matches up to.
Taking a chance you could also get the answer as:
SNAP SHOTS 2010 (5)

If they run in opposite direction, the only way it is possible is when one of them has run 200 mts
and other has run 300 mts i.e. a ratio of 2 : 3. And this is one of the option.
Alternately, using theory, and checking each option turn by turn
If ratio of speed is 1 : 3, they would meet at only 2 distinct points on the track, if running in same
direction and at 4 distinct points on the track, if running in opposite directions. With these number
of distinct points on the track they will never meet at 200 mts from start.
Similar reasoning will rule out ratio of speeds being 3 : 5 and 7 : 11.

20. 2
Shyams and Vyoms ratio of speeds of taking steps is 3 : 2. Since the steps taken by the two are 25

If there were a total of N steps on the escalator, the escalator covers distances of N 25 and N 20

Let r and s be the number of days Rohan and Sohan take respectively to complete the work and n
be the number of days they take to complete the work if working together.
Then,

Also,

Putting the value of n from (i) in the above equation:

rs
r+s
s-
rs
r+s

2
s

So r : s =3 : 4. Since the ratio of the number of days taken by Rohan and Sohan is 3:4, so the ratio
of the output of Rohan and Sohan is 4:3.
Hence, Rohans share in Rs.7000 should be Rs.4000.
Note: When two people are working simultaneously, the ratio of the extra time that they would take
if working alone is the ratio of the square of the time they take when working alone.
Answer is (3).

22. 4
In the same time in which A runs 500 mts, B runs 400 mts. Thus the ratio of their speeds is 5 : 4.
Using these ratios, we find that

30 persons between 0 15 are unemployed.
Remaining there are 90 unemployed. Which are in age group of 16 90+
So in this all the citizens of age group 16 30 can be either employed or retired, so minimum there
are 0 persons who are unemployed in the age group of 16 30.

31. Solution: - Option no. 4
As solved in the last question, it cant be determined using the given data.

32. Solution: - Option no. 1
Even if all the person of age group 31 60 are employed, there should be 180 155 =25 who are
employed in the age group of 16 30. If all the persons in the age group of 61 90+are retired
there should be 100 95 =5 persons in the age group of 16 30 who are retired. Unemployed in
the age group of 16 30 =120 25 5 =90

33. Solution: - Option no. 2
As we can determine total number of persons in the society by adding up employed, unemployed
and retired persons which is 120 +180 +100 =400.
Total no. of persons in the age group except 31 90+=80 +75 +40 +30 +25 =250.
So total persons in the age group 0 30 =400 250 =150.

As solved in the last question if all the person of age group 31 60 are employed, there should be
180 155 =25 who are employed in the age group of 16 30 and If all the persons in the age
group of 61 90+are retired there should be 100 95 =5 persons in the age group of 16 30 who
are retired, so there is a minimum of 25 +5 =30 persons in the age group of 16 30.

So only A & B is definitely true.

34. Solution: - Option no. 4
After the all interchanging process, Teddy Ltd. Has 50 employees, so net change because of Teddy is nil.
Before the interchange Meddy has (50 59) employees, now it has 50 employees.
So net change as of Meddy is (0 9) 35
Freedy earlier has 50 employees, now it has 50 59 employees
So net change as of Freddy Ltd. =(0 9) (36 - 49)
(0 9) (36 - 49) - (0 9) 35 =50 lakhs
(0 9) (1 - 14) =50 lakhs
Only possibility is 5 10
So salary package should be 45 lakhs.

35. Solution: - Option no. 1

Freddy Teddy Meddy
A 30 30 or 49 49
B 50 50 51 - 59
SNAP SHOTS 2010 (5)

C 51 - 74 60 60
D 75 75 or 85 85
E 80 80 86 - 150
F 90 or 150 90 150

So minimum possible sum
=30 +50 +51 +75 +80 +90 +30 +50 +60 +75 +80 +90 +49 +51 +60 +85 +86 +150 =1242
So 1222 cant be the sum of employees.

36. Solution: - Option no. 3

Freddy Teddy Meddy
A 30 A 49
B 50 50 b
C C 60 60
D 75 D 85
E 8555550 855550 86 - 150
F f 90 150

Here employees of a company must be average of other two
In grade A, a cant be average of 30 +49, as number of employee cant be in fraction.
So either 30 or 49 should be average. If 49 is average sum of number of employees in Grade A should be
147. So a =147 30 49 =68. Which is not possible, so average is 30 and a = 11
Only possible value of b and c is 50 and 60 respectively.
We cannot determine d and f uniquely.
So we can determine only a, b and c

EXPLANATION for questions 37 to 40:
Given that on no two consecutive days, the number of students that were absent is the same, we can
conclude that either T7 or T8 is the teacher that did not make a mistake in counting the number of
students that are present on each of the six days of the week.

Case 1:
T7 is the teacher who did not make a mistake in counting the number of students that are present on each
of the six days of the week.
In this case, the number of teachers who made a mistake in counting the number of students present in the
class on each of the six days of the week is not three.
