Disaster Recovery using Cloud Computing

Ms.VeenaPawar, Prof.P.S.Lokhande MGM College of Engineering and Technology, Computer Department, Mumbai University. veena904@gmail.com pslokhande@gmail.com Abstract- In the business database services, disaster may happen like hardware failure, software failure, security, data loss, and many others. Every user needs data backup and recovery to keep their data securely, in case of disaster. Here we introduce a simple solution for this problem in the form of a cloud computing model for disaster recovery. Users data is stored on the cloud. Application platform and operating system are used to operate on data. Cloud computing is a model in which computing is become a cloud of computers from personal computers. In this paper we discuss more on disaster recovery using cloud computing. We understand the disaster recovery with cloud computing means ready to use recovery facilities without paying for dedicated servers, bandwidth, power, space, cooling, human resources, and any other types of infrastructures. Here, we focus on Infrastructure as a Service provided by cloud service provider. We also discuss the drawbacks of conventional DR systems and compare them with cloud. Keywords: Cloud Computing, Disaster Recovery, data Backup. I. INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, large firms require computers and resources for their business work. Sometimes problems are encountered like machines failure, hard drive crash, virus issues etc. So, to overcome these problems Cloud Computing comes to release. Organization or users dont have to install and store their application or data which requires large amount of storage space on their own computer, instead of that they can use the Cloud. A. Cloud Computing: Cloud computing is the internet based computing model that provides software, infrastructure, platform, devices and other resources by virtual shared servers and hosting to customers on a pay per use basis. It provides centralize computing infrastructure. Cloud service provider provides shared resources and applications to customers on a pay as you use basis. All information is stored securely on centralized server. Customer can access that information through internet (and

thats a compulsion!). Computer resources are rented and shared among multiple renters (just like tenants share apartments) and are used by them. Simply putting the cloud replaces the data center or server providing the same service thats delivered over an Internet connection. Thus, Cloud Computing is simply IT services sold and distributed over the Internet. E.g. you need to run & test some application on say Microsoft SharePoint Portal server during development & testing phase of software. Now you need to setup entire 64 bit server with huge ram /disk space with licensed copies of MS Server 2008, MS SQL, SharePoint Server etc. etc. huge task, huge time and huge money! To save this all why not to opt for a cloud service that provides you all this for just some dollars per month. Pay as you go! Thats power of cloud! Advantages of Cloud Computing We list here few advantages of Cloud computing v/s on premises computing:

Reduced Cost: Cloud technology is paid incrementally, saving organizations cost. Increased Storage: Organizations can store more data than on private computer systems. Highly Automated: No longer do IT personnel need to worry about keeping software up to date. More Mobility: Employees can access information anytime, anywhere they are. Achieve economies of scale: Increase volume output or productivity with fewer people. Reduce spending on technology infrastructure. Streamline processes: Get more work done in less time with less people. Reduce capital costs: Theres no need to spend big money on hardware, software or licensing fees. Less personnel training is needed: It takes fewer people to do more work on a cloud, with a minimal learning curve on hardware and software issues. Minimize licensing new software: Stretch and grow without the need to buy expensive software licenses or programs.

B. Disaster Recovery:

Disaster is unexpected events in a system during its life time. Disaster may occur either naturally (earthquakes, flood, Tsunami) or human made (terrorist attack like 26/11, riots and country wars). A single disaster can cost millions of rupees in recovering and getting back on track. Loss of money, skills and time. To be on the safer side, we need to be careful and invest in good DR plan. Cloud computing approach makes system architecture more effective on disaster recovery capabilities. C. Deployment Models of Cloud Computing

Figure1. Deployment model of cloud computing. There are different models have been developed for deploying Cloud infrastructure. Public cloud Public cloud also called as external cloud. In public cloud, a service provider makes resources such as applications and storage to the general public over the Internet. Public cloud services may be free or offered on a pay-per-usage model. It is easily scalable to meet customer requirements. Examples of public clouds include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), IBM's Blue Cloud, Sun Cloud, Google AppEngine and Windows Azure Services Platform. 1. SaaS

Software as a service, it is sometimes referred to as "on-demand software. The cost for accessing the software matters. So you dont have to pay for as much for the software, you have to pay only based on your use of the service or application. 2. PaaS Platform as a service (PaaS) provides all the resources or development platforms to build and run applications and services in the cloud without cost and complexity of purchasing and managing required hardware, softwares, operating systems, and computing capacity. 3. IaaS Here Cloud Computing provides virtualized servers, networks, storage and systems software, usually (but not always) in a multitenant architecture. IaaS is designed to expand or replace the functions of an entire data center. This saves cost (time and expense) of capital equipment deployment. A hybrid cloud A hybrid cloud is a composition of two or more cloud such as public, private or community cloud. It offers advantages of multiple deployment models. In this cloud computing environment, an organization provides and manages some resources in house and has others provided externally. Private cloud Private cloud is cloud infrastructure operated specially for a single organization. It provides hosted services to a limited number of people behind a firewall. These services hosted internally or externally and managed internally or by a third party. Community Model In this community model infrastructure is shared among several organizations from a specific community with common concerns (security, compliance, jurisdiction, etc.). It is managed internally or by a third-party and hosted internally or externally. II. WHATSYOURDATABACKUPOPTION?

No doubt your Data Recovery can be real beneficial if (and only if) your backup plans are appropriate! Your backup types can be: A. Onsite backup Its a manual backup, which is taken by directly connecting CD/DVD /Hard disks to computer & copying data files. It is a quick process as direct copy paste of data. For cost cutting, you may wish to do your own backups. Its simple, quick but it can be time consuming. But it has some cons such as manual data backup needs a dedicated person to copy files without fail. In case of unfortunate disaster, data can be lost due as it kept onsite. Data security is Low as disks can be lost, stolen or damaged. It may happen in even the most well managed backup procedures. Data is stored in an unencrypted format making theft a significant risk. B. Offsite backup It can be hard disk/ DVD backup saved on remote location, or just online backup on remote servers. Online Backup is primarily designed to back up your files in background while you work normally. The time required depends on speed of your network. Data recovery is high, as data is stored on multiple disks at multiple sites, all are constantly monitored. Engineers are there 24/7 monitoring & protecting your data, so it is more reliable. It provides high security that data is encrypted when in transit and in storage, eliminating the risk of it being compromised. These services do charge on a monthly basis depending on your data volume to be backed up. Customer can access from anywhere over Internet enabled computers/laptops. Even this reliability, scalability, and flexibility it has some cons as in basic requirement is that it requires internet connection. Very few providers include backup in addition to file syncing and sharing. Although the Online and Cloud back up can be considered of similar types, they are differentiated as follows:

Table1. Differentiate between Offsite storage and Cloud storage Offsite (Online) Storage Good protection. As data is encrypted when in transit and in storage. Access from anywhere over Internet enabled computers/laptops Cloud Storage Triple encryption, SSL, Permission Management etc. are used for Advanced Data security. Access from anywhere over Internet and from any devices Mainly for users who work on different machines/ Devices Online Backup is primarily designed to back up your files & restore them to your computer in case of hard drive failure or theft Very few providers include backup in addition to file syncing and sharing Cloud Storage is designed to make it easy to regularly access, share and synchronise your files across multiple devices However, the main factor that differentiates cloud storage from simple online backup is the ability of cloud storage services to sync specific files across all of your devices. If you simply need a service that will back up all of your important files & safeguard you if a computer crashed, use online backup services Sharing/Collaboration of files not possible If you are always on travel and need your documents to be easily accessible, use CLOUD Service. You can even collaborate on files and share them with others, with each person able to see changes in real-time! Service providers are Norton Online Backup, My PC Backup.com, SugerSync Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive, SugerSync, JustCloud.com

CLOUD COMPUTING-A POWERFUL DR TOOL

The clouds are powerful disaster recovery tool as it is time saving, needs less manual process involvement, scalable to increases storage requirements and most importantly simplify the complicates data management. It also helps in high solution availability, cost saving, speed of development. The important points where it will be help are: It will add flexibility to quickly adapt and scale to business needs.

Reduce IT complexity by standardizing processes and applications across multiple platforms. Increasing customer/client satisfaction by improving ease of access It will bring more flexibility and less complexity in IT processes It will mitigate risk of business disruption with highly available solutions Backup automation can be achieved through various apps provided by cloud vendors. Add security by enabling quick deployments of VPNs and firewalls

Apart from positive wave that cloud brings along with it in this area we may have to consider some Cons: 1. What will happen if the cloud (infrastructure provider) goes offline? 2. Licensing issues should also be a concern. 3. Some providers are not responsible for backing anything up. They will provide only availability. Its you - who is going to need new tools to backup, monitor and manage. 4. Is your data in safe hands? Are they caring & storing your sensitive data like you expect them to do? If proper security is maintained we can assure Cloud as a real time disaster recovery solution for critical business needs, and we can surely demand for more from future! IV. CONCLUSION cons as well.

The cloud though a very flexible and quickly provisioned solution and therefore quite attractive it currently wants a backup solution. We propose here a recovery of data from disaster at consumer sites. With minimal cost over and above the cloud services, consumers can have peace of mind. Any solution without backup is not complete. Business continuity and disaster recovery is very much essential for any business. The lack of backup in cloud computing solutions must be plugged and with this solution, the negative impact on business can be avoided. This simple solution should address online backup and disaster recovery.
