RBS15 Mk3

Anti-Ship Missile System with Land Attack Capability

Diehl BGT Defence and Saab Dynamics have developed and produced missiles for various applications for more than 50 years. One of their most significant developments is the RBS15 anti-ship missile family, which is in service or procurement with several defence forces, such as Sweden, Germany, Poland, Finland and others. Three versions are available shiplaunched, truck-launched and air-launched.

RBS15 Mk3 New Generation Anti-Ship Missile System

The RBS15 Mk3 new-generation anti-ship missile system, is a state-of-the-art system that meets the demanding requirements of todays and future naval scenarios. The system is jointly produced and marketed by Diehl BGT Defence, Germany and Saab Dynamics, Sweden.

The RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missile system has the capability of precision engagement of both surface and land targets at long range. It is thus well suited to be the primary above surface warfare weapon for ships of almost any size. It is an all-weather, true fire-and-forget, sea-skimming, cruise type missile with an active radar target seeker. The RBS15 Mk3 is equipped with a GPS, which provides the system with significant capability to engage both littoral and land targets. Besides the systems unrivalled operational capability in scenarios ranging from traditional blue water to littoral warfare and land attack,

the ability to acquire the correct target in order to avoid collateral damage, will be even more important in the future. Requirements will more than ever before focus on properties like target identification, precise navigation and excellent defence penetration. Countermeasures are likely to become even more sophisticated. The new generation of missiles must be able to withstand and cope with the targets expanding range of both hard-kill and soft-kill options. The RBS15 Mk3, with its inherent growth potential, will meet all these stringent requirements in the complex future naval scenario.

Operational Scenarios

The RBS15 Mk3 is designed for superiority in different scenarios: Open-sea engagements In a hostile environment, threats may suddenly appear. The RBS15 Mk3 is prepared for the situation through its advanced decision support, permitting a rapid response to the threat. The long flight range also makes it possible to strike from a stand-off distance. Pinpointing and selecting true targets in an invasion fleet and disregarding other vessels is also essential. Consequently, the RBS15 Mk3 has a highly evolved target discrimination and selection ability. Littoral warfare The combination of an extremely versatile trajectory and seeker intelligence offers a unique capability for engaging targets very close to land or among islands or on land. Land attack The RBS15 Mk3 includes a state-of-the-art navigation system with GPS, which provides the system with a significant capability of engaging concealed littoral targets as well as certain land targets.

Engagement Planning

An advanced user interface is provided for operational support and to optimize the engagement of the system in different scenarios. The Missile Engagement Planning System (MEPS) contains features such as:

Graphic user interface Extensive decision support Automatic engagement plan generation Individual missile preparation Tactics simulator for pre- and post-firing analysis as well as extensive training

Combat mode Display of automatically generated engagement plans

Simulation mode Simulated missile firings in userdefined scenarios for training and tactics development The Missile Engagement Planning System 5

Main Characteristics
The RBS15 Mk3 is a fire and forget anti-ship missile with all-weather, day and night operational capability. The main characteristics are: Operational and tactical versatility with a very flexible trajectory, including - flight range of 250+ km - large number of waypoints and altitudes - extremely low sea-skimming with sea-state adaptation Sophisticated target discrimination and selection Land attack capability High defence penetration capability - Soft-Kill resistance - Hard-Kill resistance Easy engagement planning, including extensive decision support Stealth features: low radar cross section and IR signature

Long Firing Range

Using the ships own sensors (radar, ESM etc.) in combination with external sensors (e.g. other ships or airborne early warning) allows maximum exploitation of the RBS15 Mk3s firing range, from extremely short to very long. Not only can attacks be mounted beyond the range of the opponents offensive systems, but they can also be carried out beyond the targets radar horizon. The long flight range, combined with the use of multiple waypoints, permits advanced tactics such as attacking from any selected direction and making use of terrain, such as islands, to mask the missiles approach. It also gives a reattack capability.

Target Discrimination and Selection

In littoral warfare and multi-target scenarios, a target discrimi nation and selection capability is vital, as is the need to avoid collateral damage. With the RBS15 Mk3, specific target selection is achieved by a high-resolution radar seeker, intelligent signal processing and a number of programmable parameters such as target priority, search area size, target size, masking and attack direction.

Target discrimination and selection

Soft-Kill Resistance
The RBS15 Mk3 is designed to be highly resistant to all kinds of ECM. Chaff, active jammers, decoys and other types of electronic countermeasures are effectively countered by the unique combination of the inherent characteristics of the target seeker itself and the sophisticated signal processing.

Resistance against chaff, active jammers etc.

Hard-Kill Resistance
The success of a mission also depends on the ability to penetrate a targets missile and gun defences. The RBS15 Mk3 combines sea-state adapted extremely low seaskimming with unpredictable evasive manoeuvres and increased thrust in the terminal phase. To further improve the hit probability against heavily defended targets, RBS15 Mk3 can be salvo-launched. Missiles in the salvo are individually programmed to arrive simultaneously at the target from different directions, thereby saturating the ships defences.

Cost Effectiveness
Based on half a century of solid experience in developing, producing and supporting advanced missile systems, and applying modern methods such as Continuous Acquisition and Life-cycle Support (CALS), Saab Dynamics and Diehl BGT Defence are prepared to deliver the most operationally capable and cost effective anti-ship missile system. The cornerstones of the RBS15 Mk3s high reliabil-ity and its low life-cycle cost are: State-of-the-art electronics and carefully selected subunits Maintenance concept with on-line function monitoring and built-in test Long-term support, throughout the systems lifetime Extensive supply support In-customer-country maintenance Low life-cycle cost

Missile configuration

The missile has cruciform wings and canards with elevons on the wings. In its ship- and trucklaunched version, it is launched by means of two booster motors. Sustainer power is provided by a variable-thrust turbo-jet engine. The state-ofthe-art guidance and control system consists mainly of a high-performance inertial measurement unit and a GPS receiver, a radar altimeter and a sophisticated radar target seeker. The inherent characteristics of the target seeker (e.g. high resolution, frequency agility, jittered PRF and high processing power) make it highly resistant to ECM. The devastating effect is ensured by an optimized heavy HE blast and fragmentation warhead.

The RBS15 Family

Ship-launched

The RBS15 Mk3 is easily installed on naval craft ranging from fast patrol boats upwards. Integration with the Combat Management System is simple and can be done either stand-alone or fully integrated.

Air-launched

The tactical range of the airlaunched version gives a powerful and in-depth anti-invasion defence.

Truck-launched

The truck-launched missile battery is highly mobile and can be rapidly deployed. Overland flight capability allows missile firing from concealed positions far from the coastline.
