Eastern Limb HRD Career Expo 2013

More than 9000 children visited the Eastern Limb Human Resources Develoment Career Expo 2013 of the mining industry which was hosted by Samancor Tubatse Chrome at Steelpoort this week. The Expo was officially opened by Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Charles Sekoeati, wo addressed guests on behalf of the Premier, Mr Stanley Mathabatha, who could not attend the opening function on Tuesday. . General Manager of Tubatse Ferrochrome, Mr Andor Esbach, addressed guests, while buses with senior learners from schools in the area arrived at the Tubatse Chrome Club. Mr Andries Nieuwoudt of Tubatse Chrome explained the reason for the mines involvement in investing in better school facilities, but added that better facilities alone will not produce the manpower with the skills mines need for the future if quality education with well trained teachers are not prevalent, which is the governments side of the partnership. Only then can the dream of a prosperous future for learners and communities be guaranteed. He also explained that the career expo served the purpose of giving learners hope and guidance and practically showed them to what careers the correct subject choice and results in schools may lead to. This aspect was important to give learners access to to the myriad of bursaries made available by the industry to insure human resources for sustainable mining industry development. The Limpopo MEC for Education Mme Dikeledi Magadzi told the audience that the government and the industry shared the same dream and hopes for the future and that various project by the department, as weel as joint projects with the industry are making good progress towards realising objectives. She also stated that not only should local learners be made aware of career options in mining and related industries, but that these industries should also be propagated to other schools in the province not directly in the vicinity of the mining belt. After enjoying some refreshments, the dignitaries from government and the mines took a tour of the expowhere they chatted to learners and exhibitors.

Dit was baie swaar vir my kinders om my so siek te sien. Op daardie tydstip was ek n onderwyseres by Laerskool Burgersfort. Party dae is moeiliker as ander. Sonder Hom in my lewe sou ek geensins hierdie situasie kon hanteer nie. Dankie daarvoor. My greatest blessing call me Mom! Ek is oneindig lief vir julle!

Ina Burger is n groot ondersteuner van Bandana Dag.

Silent heroes rewarded for their long service

Mines Rescue Service teams are the people who assist when there is a fire or other life threatening emergency underground. These volunteers are often the heroes of the day who get little reward for their time and effort. At a special function at Laske Nakke near Mashishing (Lydenburg) last week Saturday those with five and 10 years service were acknowledged and thanked for their contribution. Awards for five years of service was given to Frans Selomo (Cons Murch); Riaan Roos (Dwarsrivier); Leon Grobler (Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines); Bob Mashigo (Modikwa); Anthony Mmopane (Modikwa); Albert Theron (Palabora Copper); Dewan Snyman (Palabora Copper); Simon Mathebula (Palabora Copper); Hennie Visser (Palabora Copper); Wayne Smit (Palabora Copper); Peet Nel (Two Rivers Platinum); Tshifhiwa Mathiva (Tshikondeni); Rudie van den Heever (Twickenham) and Reghardt Pienaar (Thorncliffe). A ten year award was given to Koos Laas from Two Rivers Platinum Mine. Mr Willie du Preez from Mines Rescue Services and Mr Adriaan de Beer, general manager of Two Rivers Platinum who hosted the evening also had a chance to speak. The evening ended with delicious food, and dancing to the sound of DJ Ossewa. Right: Mr Willie du Preez from Mines Rescue Services with Koos Laas and his wife Maritte. Koos received a 10 year service award.

Children benefit from Winter Warmer Campaign

Samancor ECM donated 100 blankets to the annual Winter Warmer project of Friend in Need. Friend in Need is a nonprofit organisation operating in the Steelpoort/Burgersfort and Lydenburg region. Friend in Need envisions reaching the multitudes by serving the community in various facets and in so doing be active partakers in the great commission. The blankets were distributed to local Crches within the Eerstegeluk and Mampuru village areas. Each child received a blanket, and the non-perishable food was donated to the crches for their respective feeding schemes.

Wildevy 4x4
27 July 2013 was the 10th anniversary of the Wildevy 4x4 challenge. This event is an annual event hosted by the Wildevy Manne from the local area. With this event, money is raised to support local community initiatives. ECM participated in manning of an obstacle point and also the Potjiekos competition. We are proud to announce that we won the following prizes: Best Potjiekos, Best Team Spirit, Best Theme, Most Original Theme and Best Obstacle Point. Our theme this year was Breast Cancer awareness.

Giving on Mandela Day

The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: Mr Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All we are asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time, whether its supporting your chosen charity or serving your local community.Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals for people everywhere to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did. ECM did some repair work and painting at the Mangabane Creche with the help of ECM contractors. We would like to thank everybody who gave 67 minutes of their day for this good cause.

Womens Day at ECM

On 9 August 1956, 20,000 women staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950. They left bundles of petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at prime minister JG Strijdoms office doors. Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with their children on their backs. The women sang a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint Abafazi Wathintimbokodo! (Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.). In the 54 years since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: you strike a woman, you strike a rock) has come to represent womens courage and strength in South Africa. On 24 August 2013, ECM hosted a Womens Day lunch at Winterveld Rec Club. Some of our employees showed their talents by reading their own poems. The motivational speaker for the day was Amanda van Zyl. She again made the ladies aware of their importance in society. She said Beautiful people do not just happen...They have bloomed through heartache, defeat, suffering and loss. Like a pearl, a womans true beauty is reflected by the light from within.

Going big on Casual Day

The annual casual day was celebrated on 06 September 2013. The HR team showed their support by dressing up and going BIG. The theme this year was GO BIG. Casual Day is celebrated too raise money and awareness for people with disabilities.

Having a blast at Winterveld Festival

Black, White, Coloured, Indian

Development indicators released by the Minister of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency, Collins Chabane show that most South Africans are proud to be a part of this country. The indicators also showed how far the nation has come in terms of becoming a unit that considers themselves one with no regard to race or language. 88% of people targeted in the research were proud to be South African, but only 58% see a happy future for all races. Only 4.1% of people described themselves by their language or tribe while only 8.8% used race as an indicator to describe themselves. Social cohesion in the country is however not just measured in the relations between black and white. Determining factors also incorporate discrimination based on: sexism, ethnicity, class and xenophobia. Mr Sandile Mamela, chief director for social cohesion at the Department of Arts & Culture said: All forms of self-identity or discrimination or social measurement based on race, ethnicity and other forms of prejudicial standards should be seriously reconsidered or done away with. This can only happen when individuals, organisations and communities emphasise and promote their South African identity and judge people by the content of their character and not race or language. He adds: We cannot relieve our consciences by blaming external factors for how we treat fellow citizens. The problem here is that many people are reluctant to take responsibility for what happens in this country. He also emphasises that it would be incorrect to just presume everything is well within the black community while different interest groups are splintering them apart. After almost 20 years of democracy how do you think about yourself and others? This was the question we asked readers this week. They also explained how they see racism in our area and country.

Mr Nicholas Mnisi and Mr Mandla Mgiba said: Racism is no longer a problem in South Africa. People of all colours are everywhere. We think that we are all equal. Mr Charles Banda said: I agree that people are seeing themselves as mostly proudly South African. There are quite a lot of changes since the new South Africa. There is still a minority who needs transformation. Especially those who were previously affected by the apartheid era need to change their mindset after they were treated so badly. Racism is still a problem from a minority, but they try to hide it.

Mr Lamett Mahloko said: Racism is still a problem in South Africa and in our area. Everyone should be treated the same. I treat everyone the same. We are all human beings. BEE is alright. The problem is just that people in the procurement departments at companies do not give preference to people from BEE companies.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: I feel we are one. Not white or black. There are still towns with racism but we try to be one. There are some challenges.

Mnr.

Mr Isaiah Malepe said: I think there is still partial discrimination based on race in South Africa. I, myself dont have a problem with people from any race or language. Everyone is the same and I wish we could have the same spirit. BEE is dividing the nation. It does not help to create one nation. I dont like the BEE setup. People should be treated the same, no matter what their gender or race. Affirmative action should also go. Sometimes they employ someone, just because they are the correct gender, although better applicants who are more qualified applied for the position.

Right: Mr Mack Mogashoa said: We are equal now. Weve come a long way. If we focus on colour it will bring a lot of destruction to the youth. I just see fellow human beings in people around me. Racism is still a problem where people are not educated.

Mr Vusi Maphanga said: It is not true. People are still being oppressed even it they are free. I am seeing all South Africans as one, no matter what colour they are. Especially the Zimbaweans in South Africa are being treated badly. You will find that even the police will go to those selling air time and just demand to take it. They cannot do anything because they are not South African and it is the police doing it.

or just a South African?

Mr Cafrin Magabe and Mr Mmusho Magabe said: 15% of people are still discriminating based on race. Most people dont take into account whether you are black or white. That 15% who is discriminating is mostly within the mines. We see ourselves as just South African and the same as everyone else.

Me.

Mr Sipho Silinda said: The elements of racism are still there. It will take time for people to accept that there is no room for racism. I dont judge people by their skin pigmentation - it is just how God created us. There are still people living in a dream world - who cannot let go of racism. I feel it is time to let go of racism. BEE has not materialised much as youll often find that those who were previously disadvantaged are used for fronting companies and dont really benefit. Companies must do more to get employment equity.

Left: Mr Sydney Makgopa said: Racism is not a problem at all now. Culture things are coming to an end. We are becoming one. I just notice the person and not their colour. There is no more areas that are just for white or black people.

Mr MA Muroa said: I see other people as human beings created by God as fellow South Africans. I work all over with white and black people. There is no boundaries. I think we are winning the racism thing.

Bo: Me. Leona Randall s: Ja, veral in die stede sien mense mekaar as net SuidAfrikaners. Ek sien myself as n African, dis waar ons roots is. Hoe meer ons mekaar so sien hoe beter.

Left: Ms Mmasaku Mohale said: We have come a long way but we still have a lot more to do. We must acknowledge the progress. But the challenges are still there. I think of myself as firstly a South African. Colour should not be an issue. With her is Bobo.

Mr Mndebele Putine said: Only blacks accept whites as compatriots. Whites are still afraid of black people. Whites see black people as thieves. In the work sector whites are also preferred to blacks. There are a few whites who are different, but most still have a problem.

Links: Mnr. By hom is Zenel.
